Book excerpt: "This book...is designed to make the Bible of Israel intelligible, relevant, and hopefully, inspiring to a sophisticated generation, possessed of intellectual curiosity and ethical sensitivity...It is based on the belief that the study of the Book of Books must constitute a mature intellectual challenge, an exposure to the expanding universe of scientific biblical scholarship...Far from presenting a threat to faith, a challenge to the intellect may reinforce faith and purify it."--from the Introduction

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis, Vol. 2: Expounded in a Series of Discourses The divine testimony concerning Esau's state of mind towards his brother Jacob - his bitter hatred and bloody purpose - is the most authentic commentary upon his previous conduct; - "Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob" (ver. 41)? Surely if Esau had really been seeking either true repentance, or any spiritual blessing which the godly sorrow of true repentance can command, he would have been humbled for his own sin before God, and anxious to have a share in the covenant-blessing on any terms that God might appoint. And towards his brother, he would have cherished such a sentiment as the oracle from the first should have awakened; and now much more after even his too partial father had acquiesced in it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Weighty, judicious, and full of Gospel truth. One of the very best series of discourses extant on Genesis." -C.H. Spurgeon "Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was an outstanding figure with qualities that make him one of the most attractive figures in Baptist history. Many in his day could echo the words of his very close friend William Carey, 'I loved him.' As a pastor, part of the way that Fuller gave legs to his conviction about Scripture was to follow the expository preaching method of men like John Calvin (1509-1564) or the English Puritans and preach through Bible books consecutively verse by verse, chapter by chapter. He thus laid before his people 'the whole counsel of God' (Acts 20:27). Although he covered a significant amount of Scripture this way in his Kettering pulpit, only two of those expository series eventually found their way into print: one on Revelation, published in the final year of his life, and this one on Genesis, from 1806. It has long been out of print as an independent volume, though it has been available through various editions of Fuller's complete works. It is good to see it back in print, for as Charles H. Spurgeon once remarked about this very book: it is 'weighty, judicious, and full of Gospel truth. One of the very best series of discourses extant upon Genesis.'" - Michael Haykin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was the leading Baptist theologian of his era, though his works are just now being made available in a critical edition. Strictures on Sandemanianism is the fourth volume in The Works of Andrew Fuller. In this treatise, Fuller critiqued Sandemanianism, a form of Restorationism that first emerged in Scotland in the eighteenth century and was influencing the Scotch Baptists of Fuller's day. Fuller's biggest concern was the Sandemanian belief that saving faith is merely intellectual assent to the gospel. Fuller believed this "intellectualist" view of faith undermined evangelical spirituality. Strictures on Sandemanianism became a leading evangelical critique of Sandemanian views. This critical edition will introduce scholars to this important work and shed light on evangelical debates about the faith, justification, and sanctification during the latter half of the "long" eighteenth century (ca. 1750 to 1815).
