Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-Dimensional Separated Flows provides a systematic presentation of the theory of separated flow around bodies. The main classes of aerodynamic problems of plane-parallel flow around bodies are described, and the steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and statistical characteristics of a trailing wake are determined. Numerical methods based on the synthesis of models for non-viscous incompressible flow and boundary layer, algorithms, examples, and systematic comparisons are presented. The book also includes numerical results for the problem of separated flow around fixed, oscillating, and rotating cylinders, in addition to results for separated flow around an aerofoil over a wide range of angles. Two-Dimensional Separated Flows will benefit researchers and students studying aerodynamics, aircraft dynamics, aeroelasticity, and the aerodynamics of building structures.

Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of constructing solutions for transonic flow over symmetric airfoils is treated for simplification of the mapping of the incompressible flow is emphasized. In the case of a symmetric Joukowski airfoil without circulation the mapping is relatively simple, but the coefficients in the power series are difficult to evaluate. As a means of simplification an approximate flow is used which differs only slightly from the exact incompressible one when the thickness is small. Flow with circulation is also considered by the same method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A calculation method for transonic separated flow about two-dimensional airfoils at incidence is presented in this report. The method is capable of predicting the effects of both leading- and trailing-edge separated flows, although the former is usually associated with a complete collapse of the airfoil flow field, in which case the flow is no longer supercritical. A viscous potential flow iteration procedure provides the connection between potential flow, boundary layer and wake modules. The separated wake is modelled in the potential flow analysis by thin sheets across which exists a jump in velocity potential. These sheets are analogous to vorticity sheets in incompressible flow. The basic potential flow method is a modification of Jameson's full potential method. Calculations for four different airfoils have been compared with experiment for pressure distributions as well as integrated forces. The agreement between theory and experiment is generally good even when shock waves are present. (Author).

Book excerpt: This reference report is a summary of several methods available for the determination of the incompressible non-viscous flow around a two-dimensional airfoil. The object is to present the methods in a simple, unified manner that can be easily understood by the average engineer. Examples of the calculation procedures are given. The methods described may be used to determine the velocity distribution around an arbitrary airfoil, the velocity field around an arbitrary airfoil, the airfoil shape required for a desired velocity distribution, and velocity distribution changes due to small changes on an airfoil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional incompressible turbulent viscous flow over airfoils of arbitrary geometry. A body-fitted coordinate system is numerically transformed to a rectangular grid in the computational plane. The time dependent Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations in the primitive variables of velocity and pressure are used. Turbulence is modelled with an algebraic eddy viscosity technique modified for separated adverse pressure gradient flows. The set of transformed partial differential equations is solved with an implicit finite difference method. Numerical solutions for a NACA 0012 airfoil near stall at a chord Reynolds number of 170,000 are favorably compared with surface pressure and velocity field measurements. A small laminar separation bubble near the suction pressure peak is observed. Computed lift and drag coefficients agree well with experimental values. (Author).

Book excerpt: Numerical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional incompressible turbulent viscous flow over airfoils of arbitrary geometry. An algebraic eddy viscosity turbulence model based on Prandtl's mixing length theory is modified for separated adverse pressure gradient flows. Finite difference methods for solving the inviscid stream function equation and the incompressible laminar Navier-Stokes equations are used. A finite difference method for solving the Reynolds averaged incompressible turbulent two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is employed. The inviscid stream function equation and the Navier-Stokes equations are transformed using a curvilinear transformation. A body-fitted coordinate system with a constant coordinate line defining the airfoil section surface is transformed to a rectangular coordinate system in the transformed or computational plane. An elliptic partial differential Poisson equation for each coordinate is used to generate the coordinate system in the physical plane for arbitrary airfoils. The two-dimensional time dependent Reynolds averaged incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the primitive variables of velocity and pressure and a Poisson pressure equation are numerically solved. Turbulence is modelled with an adverse pressure gradient eddy viscosity technique. An implicit finite difference method is used to solve the set of transformed partial differential equations. The system of linearized simultaneous difference equations, at each time step, is solved using successive-over-relaxation iteration.

Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Boundary-Layer Separation, suggested by the UK National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and supported by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, was held at University College London on August 26-28, 1986. The proposed theme and scope of the Symposium were designed to help to bring about the necessary interaction between experimentalists, computationalists and theoreticians for the furthering of understanding in this challenging subject. The talks and discussions were aimed at representing the very wide range and application of separating-flow phenomena, which often substantially affect the whole of fluid dynamics at medium to large Reynolds numbers, covering in particular both laminar and turbulent flow, steady or unsteady, two- or three-dimensional, small or large-scale, incompressible or compressible, external or internal, from the experimental, computational and theoretical standpoints. It was intended that about 80 scientists would participate in the Symposium, with about 25 talks being delivered, to which poster sessions with 8 contributions were added subsequently. All the speakers and poster presenters were selected by the scientific committee, although two late replacements of speakers were required. Fruitful discussions, well led by the session chairmen, took place formally after each talk and after the poster sessions and informally on other occasions including the social events. The present proceedings of the Symposium appear to reflect much of the current state of experimental, computational and theoretical work and progress in boundary-layer separation. We hope that they provide also ideas, questions and stimulation, in addition to major recent developments.
