Book excerpt: From the bestselling authors of Yesterday’s Gone, No Justice, and The Karma Police series comes Available Darkness: Book Two, a character-driven reinvention of the vampire story. Darkness is Falling When a portal opens to the magickal and monstrous Otherworld, the vampire John is forced to work with the very organization that has hunted him for years — a secret government agency charged with protecting the world from supernatural threats just like John. His job: to stop Jacob from finding the vessels and seizing the power he needs to unleash hell on Earth. John must betray his own kind to protect the world and also his love, Hope, and Abigail, the child who has become like a daughter to him. But nothing can save him, or those he loves, from fate or the evil from his past that will stop at nothing to destroy them all. The portal is open. Time is running out. Darkness waits for no one. ★★★★★ "It had everything I wanted and more. Platt and Wright excel at writing fast, character driven stories that know how to put you on the edge of your seat, couch, or bed (depending on where you're reading from)." -- Christian Burch ★★★★★ "This is the fourth Platt & Wright collaboration I've read and I am 100% addicted." -- JoniJ ★★★★★ "I told my self I would not just read it all in one sitting. Well I lied to myself. I devoured the book in a few hours, and now I need more. I love to hate cliff hangers. But seriously now I have to wait." -- John R Niven ★★★★★ "These guys write in a way that keeps you turning pages (too late at night) and wanting more of each story they do." -- Dave Horton ★★★★★ "This second season rocks! Even if you didn't read the 1st season (what's wrong with you?)...you can pick this up and know what's going on. The characters have grown (figuratively) into ones that you sympathize with, love to hate, hate to love, scream at, run from, chase after, want to kill, cheer on, cry with, cry over and generally want to grow old with." -- jkaustin02 Available Darkness: Book Two is the second book in the 3-Book Available Darkness series, a paranoid, page-turner populated by characters you won’t want to stop spending time with. It's a cat and mouse cop story, between a cop on the hunt for a supernatural serial killer, and an amnesiac vampire. Read the entire completed series today.

Book excerpt: ”What purpose is served by showing that England's greatest natural philosopher is flawed … like other mortals?” asks one of the characters in Newton's Darkness. “We need unsullied heroes!” But what if the hero is sullied? At stake is an issue that is as germane today as it was 300 years ago: a scientist's ethics must not be divorced from scientific accomplishments. There is probably no other scientist of whom so many biographies and other historical analyses have been published than Isaac Newton — all of them in the standard format of documentary prose because of their didactic purpose to transmit historical information. Newton's Darkness, however, illuminates the darker aspects of Newton's persona through two historically grounded plays dealing with two of the bitterest struggles in the history of science. The name of Isaac Newton appears in virtually every survey of the public's choice for the most important persons of the second millennium. Yet the term “darkness” can be applied to much of Newton's personality. Adjectives that have been used to describe facets of his personality include “remote”, “lonely”, “secretive”, “introverted”, “melancholic”, “humorless”, “puritanical”, “cruel”, “vindictive” and, perhaps worst of all, “unforgiving”. The trait most relevant to the present book is Newton's obsessively competitive nature, which was often out of proportion to the warranted facts, as demonstrated in three of Newton's best-known bitter conflicts: with the physicist Robert Hooke, the astronomer royal John Flamsteed, and a German contemporary of almost equal intellectual prowess, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz — the last fight eventually turning into an England vs Continental Europe competition. It is two of these three relentless drawn-out battles that are illuminated in Newton's Darkness in the form of historically grounded drama. After a summary of the historical evidence, the book starts with the Newton-Hooke struggle (Chapter 2), which was conducted mano a mano, and is then followed by little-known aspects of the Newton-Leibniz confrontation (Chapter 3), which was fought largely through surrogates — notably the infamous, anonymous committee of 11 Fellows of the Royal Society. Contents: Introduction: Flawed GeniusFirst View: Two PrincipalsSecond View: Three Minions Readership: Undergraduate and graduate students interested in history of science and of literature, general readers interested in biographical history, and theatre-goers. Keywords:Isaac Newton;Gottfried Leibniz;Robert Hooke;Competition among Scientists;Historical DramaReviews:“These two dramas brilliantly integrate Newton's battle with Leibniz over who invented the calculus and his tussles with Robert Hooke about just about everything else, by differentiating those scientific and human qualities that made Newton quite the limit.”John D Barrow Professor of Mathematical Sciences, author of “The Constants of Nature: From alpha to omega” Cambridge University “A dramatic insight into the complex mind of a scientific genius. This play-book reveals Newton in all three dimensions.”Baroness Greenfield Director The Royal Institution “The theatricality of science often eludes us — this book captures the boldness, idiosyncrasy and sheer breathtaking drama of Newton's genius.”Lisa Jardine Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary College, author of “The Curious Life of Robert Hooke: The Man Who Measured London” University of London “All apart from its Thespian aspects, it presents about as thoroughgoing an account of the Newton-Leibniz affair as any I've encountered over the years. Altogether, a fine integration of theater and history.”Robert K Merton Professor Emeritus, and author of “On the Shoulders of Giants” Columbia University “I highly recommend reading ‘Newton's Darkness: Two Dramatic Views’ … There is hardly a better way to promote science literacy than through the mingling of science and art, as accomplished in these plays.” Chemical & Engineering News “… both plays should appeal to students and general readers interested in biography and the history of science and literature … We give Newton's Darkness, two enjoyable, engrossing, and above all, provocative and thought-provoking plays, an enthusiastic two thumbs up.”The Chemical Educator “We found the plays to be enjoyable, engrossing, provocative, and thought-provoking, and we heartily recommend them to students and general readers interested in biography and the history of science and of literature as well as theater-goers.”Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Book excerpt: Beneath the Cape of Orion—on planet Janaidar—in a parallel universe, a dying Imperial dragon awakens from deep-time compelled to kill a dreaded NuliZhu slavemaster hiding in the Upper Hangar and Staging Area of The-Sleeping-City. Instead, he discovers a hapless human fully transformed into a cyborg by the artificial-sapience known as the WuShi. The stolen man’s name is Elijah. A gigantic flying-saucer hovers high above the early industrial riverfront of Bahndahn Towne. Jackal-headed aliens drop grenades of billowing green paralysis gas. All the people fall—many die outright. After over 5,000-years, the NuliZhu transgalactic slavers from the Empire of Ra are back! Ensconced in the base of a city-sized dodecahedron, The-Creeping-Darkness aspect of the WuShi suddenly finds itself tangled in trillions of lines of ancient code blistering its hyper-processors—a kind of machine-madness. It fires a lucent beam of crackling light up through the core of the city to a precessing cuboid above the Central Obelisk to harden the faces of The-Sleeping-City into battle-mode. Power is short. It desperately needs its newly created power-master, for a lack of power is the only thing stopping it from enslaving the entire multiverse. It must also overcome the Guardian Dragons of Janaidar—whom it fears above all else—for only they can destroy it. In the town of Riverbend, false high priestess and usurper Yenara explores her evil powers in The-Baneful-Chaos. She coldly watches as her left hand rips the ka of the hostler’s son free. His body quakes. Vaporous trails of life-elixir bear witness to the foul murder. Spasms of pleasure ripple through her belly as she imbibes the vital essence of the ill-fated lad.

And now the Underworld has sent the Shikome—foul women whose feathers carry death—to spread a supernatural plague through London. With her best friend in the hospital, Shinobu’s very existence at risk, and the city in chaos, Mio realizes there is no way she can keep everyone she loves alive. What terrible sacrifice must she make to save the world?

In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion-in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.
