It was Christmas Eve, and people were going home. The scripture reader was not going home; but he was always in a hurry. He rarely walked, in the strict interpretation of the word his numerous and varied duties in the parish obliging him to go at a perpetual trot. These daily exercises of his began at dawn and often did not cease till midnight. A thoughtful observer, perambulating the parish of St. Mark's, might have noticed that its scripture reader was as omnipresent as was drunkenness (st. Mark's had a well-deserved, viler reputation than most other parishes). The scripture reader's movements were nu noticed by the people among whom he dwelt, and for whose sake, as well as for their Maker's, he toiled and fought with want and sin and shame, by night and day, year in, year out. He had been going from place to place with his master, and now it was two long days since he had eaten a good dinner. His master was a poor tinker who traveled about the country and never stayed long in one place. Rover would have liked this if his master had been kind to him, but the dog was used only to blows and kicks. Rover was a rough, shaggy dog, and his tail curled down under him in a way that showed he had been ill-treated. But he had good, faithful, brown eyes, and the drooping tail was always ready to wag at a kind word. The tinker's breakfast was on the table. How good it smelt! Rover looked at it with longing eyes. Please give me a bit, master, said Rover. I am so hungry! The tinker did not seem to hear. At last he said roughly: Be still, Rover! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twin: Or, Home Scenes My first visit to Rose Cottage was under favourable circumstances, for I saw it in the middle of summer, and on one of the sweetest evenings of that delicious time of year. The last rays of the setting sun streamed through a small latticed window, and lit up every object in the room. It had been a day of excessive heat, although the month of June was not far advanced; and already might be seen and felt the heavy dew which was refreshing each herb, fruit, and flower. Alone in the room, and near to the Open window, stood Mary and Elizabeth - familiarly termed Lily - Fortescue, looking out upon the garden and the prospect beyond. They were twin sisters, and had scarcely numbered eight summers. They had been playing in that room and m the garden during the greater part of the day and now, upon a little couch 1n one corner, lay, carefully wrapped up, two dolls, as if put to bed betimes by their weary baby-mothers. Battledores, shuttlecocks, soft balls, and other toys, lay scattered in all directions. Presently the children seated them selves opposite each other, upon the window seat. They were simply dressed in plain white muslin frocks, and each wore a white pinafore. Very strongly they resembled each other. Both had large brown eyes, and a profusion of light brown hair; but their hair was not curled; it was simply parted. Without being particularly pretty children, there was something very pleasing in their perfect simplicity, and childlike look and manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bobbsey Twins, or Merry Days Indoor and Out Nan was a tall and slender girl, with a dark face and red cheeks. Her eyes were a deep brown and so were the curls that clustered around her head. Bert was indeed a twin, not only because he was the same age as Nan, but because he looked so very much like her. To be sure, he looked like a boy, while she looked like a girl, but he had the same dark complexion, the same brown eyes and hair, and his voice was very much the same, only stronger. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Eye for an Eye, Vol. 1 of 2 At a private asylum in the west of England there lives, and has lived for some years past, an unfortunate lady, as to whom there has long since ceased to be any hope that she should ever live elsewhere. Indeed there is no one left belonging to her by whom the indulgence of such a hope on her behalf could be cherished. Friends she has none; and her own condition is such, that she recks nothing of confinement and does not even sigh for release. And yet her mind is ever at work, - as is doubtless always the case with the insane. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping intellectual history of the role of wealth in the church in the last days of the Roman Empire Jesus taught his followers that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. Yet by the fall of Rome, the church was becoming rich beyond measure. Through the Eye of a Needle is a sweeping intellectual and social history of the vexing problem of wealth in Christianity in the waning days of the Roman Empire, written by the world's foremost scholar of late antiquity. Peter Brown examines the rise of the church through the lens of money and the challenges it posed to an institution that espoused the virtue of poverty and called avarice the root of all evil. Drawing on the writings of major Christian thinkers such as Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, Brown examines the controversies and changing attitudes toward money caused by the influx of new wealth into church coffers, and describes the spectacular acts of divestment by rich donors and their growing influence in an empire beset with crisis. He shows how the use of wealth for the care of the poor competed with older forms of philanthropy deeply rooted in the Roman world, and sheds light on the ordinary people who gave away their money in hopes of treasure in heaven. Through the Eye of a Needle challenges the widely held notion that Christianity's growing wealth sapped Rome of its ability to resist the barbarian invasions, and offers a fresh perspective on the social history of the church in late antiquity.
