Book Synopsis Resolvent, Heat Kernel, and Torsion under Degeneration to Fibered Cusps by : Pierre Albin

This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds with fibered cusps are a class of complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds including many examples of locally symmetric spaces of rank one. We study the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps. We obtain precise asymptotics for the resolvent, the heat kernel, and the determinant of the Laplacian. Using these asymptotics we obtain a topological description of the analytic torsion on a manifold with fibered cusps in terms of the R-torsion of the underlying manifold with boundary.

Book Synopsis Metric Spaces of Non-Positive Curvature by : Martin R. Bridson
Download or read book Metric Spaces of Non-Positive Curvature written by Martin R. Bridson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A description of the global properties of simply-connected spaces that are non-positively curved in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov, and the structure of groups which act on such spaces by isometries. The theory of these objects is developed in a manner accessible to anyone familiar with the rudiments of topology and group theory: non-trivial theorems are proved by concatenating elementary geometric arguments, and many examples are given. Part I provides an introduction to the geometry of geodesic spaces, while Part II develops the basic theory of spaces with upper curvature bounds. More specialized topics, such as complexes of groups, are covered in Part III.

Book Synopsis Hamiltonian Systems with Three or More Degrees of Freedom by : Carles Simó
Download or read book Hamiltonian Systems with Three or More Degrees of Freedom written by Carles Simó and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of current knowledge about Hamiltonian systems with three or more degrees of freedom and related topics. The Hamiltonian systems appearing in most of the applications are non-integrable. Hence methods to prove non-integrability results are presented and the different meaning attributed to non-integrability are discussed. For systems near an integrable one, it can be shown that, under suitable conditions, some parts of the integrable structure, most of the invariant tori, survive. Many of the papers discuss near-integrable systems. From a topological point of view, some singularities must appear in different problems, either caustics, geodesics, moving wavefronts, etc. This is also related to singularities in the projections of invariant objects, and can be used as a signature of these objects. Hyperbolic dynamics appear as a source on unpredictable behaviour and several mechanisms of hyperbolicity are presented. The destruction of tori leads to Aubrey-Mather objects, and this is touched on for a related class of systems. Examples without periodic orbits are constructed, against a classical conjecture. Other topics concern higher dimensional systems, either finite (networks and localised vibrations on them) or infinite, like the quasiperiodic Schrödinger operator or nonlinear hyperbolic PDE displaying quasiperiodic solutions. Most of the applications presented concern celestial mechanics problems, like the asteroid problem, the design of spacecraft orbits, and methods to compute periodic solutions.
Book Synopsis Introduction to l2-invariants by : Holger Kammeyer
Download or read book Introduction to l2-invariants written by Holger Kammeyer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the most important concepts and problems in the field of l2-invariants. After some foundational material on group von Neumann algebras, l2-Betti numbers are defined and their use is illustrated by several examples. The text continues with Atiyah's question on possible values of l2-Betti numbers and the relation to Kaplansky's zero divisor conjecture. The general definition of l2-Betti numbers allows for applications in group theory. A whole chapter is dedicated to Lück's approximation theorem and its generalizations. The final chapter deals with l2-torsion, twisted variants and the conjectures relating them to torsion growth in homology. The text provides a self-contained treatment that constructs the required specialized concepts from scratch. It comes with numerous exercises and examples, so that both graduate students and researchers will find it useful for self-study or as a basis for an advanced lecture course.

Book Synopsis Analytic Torsion Versus Reidemeister Torsion on Hyperbolic 3 -manifolds with Cusps by : Jonathan Pfaff
Download or read book Analytic Torsion Versus Reidemeister Torsion on Hyperbolic 3 -manifolds with Cusps written by Jonathan Pfaff and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a non-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with cusps we prove an explicit formula that relates the regularized analytic torsion associated to the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL2(C) to the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. Ourf proof rests on an expression of the analytic torsion in terms of special values of Ruelle zeta functions as well as on recent work of Pere Menal-Ferrer and Joan Porti.

Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Structures by : Matthias Beckh
Download or read book Hyperbolic Structures written by Matthias Beckh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic structures analyses the interactions of form with the structural behaviour of hyperbolic lattice towers, and the effects of the various influencing factors were determined with the help of parametric studies and load capacity analyses. This evaluation of Shukhov’s historical calculations and the reconstruction of the design and development process of his water towers shows why the Russian engineer is considered not only a pathfinder for lightweight structures but also a pioneer of parametrised design processes.
