With the help of Steve, who had taken up a role in security, and his wife, Brandy, who had taken up mapping and mineral scanning, they found themselves in a hopeful location. Paul and Steve ventured out to find out what the people of this dimension are like and what kind of threat they posed while Darius and Brandy learned about how hard it's going to be to collect the gold that they had found. Paul and Steve were discovered while they were on their scouting mission, but with some quick thinking, they were able to discover more about the people of the area along with finding a way to be able to get into the city without a problem. Paul and Steve made their way back to the city after collecting some gold to trade but became prisoners who were treated like guests when the lord of the city figured out that they were in the city. Darius had gotten a bad feeling while Paul and Steve were in the city, so since they had mined quite a bit while they were still at the ship, Darius and Brandy sealed off the mine and watched what happened while in the city. Paul and Steve found that the lords were able to spy on them in their rooms, which meant that they were holding back technology. To fight being overheard, Paul and Steve used sign language, which drove the lords a little crazy, but after the first couple of meetings, they only had to deal with the lord of the city they were in, and with that, they were able to broker a deal, which allowed them to mine the gold in the area with ease after they were able to show the lords a way to defend themselves without a sword. When Paul and Steve went back to the ship, they found that they were followed by the servant girl that was assigned to them. She was sent to spy on them but used the opportunity to escape. It wasn't long till the servant girl Cordelia became part of the crew. Paul and Steve went back to the city to work on making it better for the people of the city and were able to make a deal with the local lord so that he agreed to share the knowledge that he has horded for centuries. After their meeting, Paul and Steve got to work on their plan to help the city defend themselves from hostile lords from other areas and to help make sure that the knowledge would be given to the people. There was a little bit of time before they expected the other lords to react. After a small amount of time, there was a large festival where it was announced that all the people would start to learn everything, and that was when the lord and the crew learned that the other lords were attacking. Steve was able to train the city guards on how to defend their city with new weapons that Paul and Steve had been able to develop. The other lords attacked a little sooner than expected, but with the new advantages, they were able to save the city and create allies with a couple of the other lords. Once the battle was over, there was a celebration in the city followed by the crew leaving with promises to return and heading off to take a vacation before heading home to trade the gold they had worked for.

After extreme close quarters for several days, Paul learned to trust Darius, and Darius learned he had a new friend and a very knowledgeable business partner. Their biggest asset was a ship like no other. In fact, not only could it travel into deep space but it could jump between dimensions. They thought that they had found the perfect place to mine. While they figured out where they were going to mine, they discovered that there was a large problem that they would have to take care of first. After making friends with the locals of the nearest city, they found out that the locals only run and hide to deal with the night people who terrorized them every night. Darius knew that he would need to find a cure if possible to solve the problem while Paul had a different solution to solve the night people problem. Once all the night people were cleared out and it appeared to be safe, Paul and Darius went about mining the platinum, which was the reason that they had come to this dimension. When their hold was full of platinum, they took it back to Darius's home dimension to trade in. After they have gotten the ship resupplied, they returned to the dimension they were just in to get another hold full of platinum. Little did they know that while they were trying to fill their hold that it would become a race to survive. As they left the dimension with only a partially filled hold the second time, they left with two new crew members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers some recent advances in string theory and extra dimensions. Intended mainly for advanced graduate students in theoretical physics, it presents a rare combination of formal and phenomenological topics, based on the annual lectures given at the School of the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (2001) a traditional event that brings together graduate students in high energy physics for an intensive course of advanced learning. The lecturers in the School are leaders in their fields. The first lecture, by E D'Hoker and D Freedman, is a systematic introduction to the gauge-gravity correspondence, focusing in particular on correlation functions in the conformal case. The second, by L Dolan, provides an introduction to perturbative string theory, including recent advances on backgrounds involving Ramond-Ramond fluxes. The third, by S Gubser, explains some of the basic facts about special holonomy and its uses in string theory and M-theory. The fourth, by J Hewett, surveys the TeV phenomenology of theories with large extra dimensions. The fifth, by G Kane, presents the case for supersymmetry at the weak scale and some of its likely experimental consequences. The sixth, by A Liddle, surveys recent developments in cosmology, particularly with regard to recent measurements of the CMB and constraints on inflation. The seventh, by B Ovrut, presents the basic features of heterotic M-theory, including constructions that contain the Standard Model. The eighth, by K Rajagopal, explains the recent advances in understanding QCD at low temperatures and high densities in terms of color superconductivity. The ninth, by M Sher, summarizes grand unified theories and baryogenesis, including discussions of supersymmetry breaking and the Standard Model Higgs mechanism. The tenth, by M Spiropulu, describes collider physics, from a survey of current and future machines to examples of data analyses relevant to theories beyond the Standard Model. The eleventh, by M Strassler, is an introduction to supersymmetric gauge theory, focusing on Wilsonian renormalization and analogies between three- and four-dimensional theories. The twelfth, by W Taylor and B Zwiebach, introduces string field theory and discusses recent advances in understanding open string tachyon condensation. The thirteenth, by D Waldram, discusses explicit model building in heterotic M-theory, emphasizing the role of the 8 gauge fields. The written presentation of these lectures is detailed yet straightforward, and they will be of use to both students and experienced researchers in high-energy theoretical physics for years to come. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings) CC Proceedings Engineering & Physical Sciences"

Book excerpt: The possibility that we live in a higher-dimensional world with spatial dimensions greater than three started with the early work of Kaluza and Klein. However, in addressing experimental constraints, early model-builders were forced to compactify these extra dimensions to very tiny scales. With the development of brane-world scenarios it became possible to consider novel compactifications which allow the extra dimensions to be large or to provide observable effects of these dimensions at experimentally accessible energy scales. This book provides a comprehensive account of these recent developments, keeping the high-energy physics implications in focus. After an historical survey of the idea of extra dimensions, the book deals in detail with models of large extra dimensions, warped extra dimensions and other models such as universal extra dimensions. The theoretical and phenomenological implications are discussed in a pedagogical manner for both researchers and graduate students.

Book excerpt: This book deals with applications in several areas of science and technology that make use of light which carries orbital angular momentum. In most practical scenarios, the angular momentum can be decomposed into two independent contributions: the spin angular momentum and the orbital angular momentum. The orbital contribution affords a fundamentally new degree of freedom, with fascinating and wide-spread applications. Unlike spin angular momentum, which is associated with the polarization of light, the orbital angular momentum arises as a consequence of the spatial distribution of the intensity and phase of an optical field, even down to the single photon limit. Researchers have begun to appreciate its implications for our understanding of the ways in which light and matter can interact, and its practical potential in different areas of science and technology.
