Book Synopsis Reflections of a Siamese Twin by : John Ralston Saul
Download or read book Reflections of a Siamese Twin written by John Ralston Saul and published by Viking Adult. This book was released on 1997 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a startling exercise of reorientation, John Ralston Saul excavates our Canadian myths—real, false, and denied—and reconciles them with the reality of today's politics, culture and economics. He attacks the denial of place into which our urban centres have fallen, delineates the dramatic differences between positive and negative nationalism, probes the implications of continuing decentralization and decries the shift in focus from the public good to narrow interest groups. He proposes solutions to our mid-life crisis in social policy by reminding us of the extent to which reconciliation and reform have always been, and remain, at the core of the country's creation and survival. By building his reflections on the words of our novelists, poets, historians, songwriters, philosophers, painters and our most creative political figures over the centuries, Saul uncovers the startling shape of the Canadian experiment. With a balance of realism and optimism he convinces us that a country which is first an idea of a country is not a theoretical or utopian idea.

Book Synopsis Between Two Gardens by : James B. Nelson
Download or read book Between Two Gardens written by James B. Nelson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Between Two Gardens, theologian and ethicist James B. Nelson seeks to stimulate a further reexamination of human sexuality and the Christian experience. Here he continues to explore concerns posed in his earlier work, Embodiment. Traditionally, the relationship between religion and spirituality has reflected this one-dimensional question: What does faith say about human sexuality? Nelson, however, takes a different tack and asks more pertinently: What does sexuality say about faith--theology, scripture, tradition, and the meaning of the gospel? With this more existential perspective in mind, he explores a wide range of sexual and medical issues. Nelson discusses men's liberation; sexuality in Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant interpretations; religious and moral questions of professionals working with homosexual counselees; singleness of the church; the family; and attitudes toward abortion. Reflecting on these topics, he writes out of a healthy conviction that the process of integrating human sexuality and the life of faith is an important journey.

Book Synopsis A View from the Bottom by : Tan Hoang Nguyen
Download or read book A View from the Bottom written by Tan Hoang Nguyen and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A View from the Bottom offers a major critical reassessment of male effeminacy and its racialization in visual culture. Examining portrayals of Asian and Asian American men in Hollywood cinema, European art film, gay pornography, and experimental documentary, Nguyen Tan Hoang explores the cultural meanings that accrue to sexual positions. He shows how cultural fantasies around the position of the sexual "bottom" overdetermine and refract the meanings of race, gender, sexuality, and nationality in American culture in ways that both enable and constrain Asian masculinity. Challenging the association of bottoming with passivity and abjection, Nguyen suggests ways of thinking about the bottom position that afford agency and pleasure. A more capacious conception of bottomhood—as a sexual position, a social alliance, an affective bond, and an aesthetic form—has the potential to destabilize sexual, gender, and racial norms, suggesting an ethical mode of relation organized not around dominance and mastery but around the risk of vulnerability and shame. Thus reconceived, bottomhood as a critical category creates new possibilities for arousal, receptiveness, and recognition, and offers a new framework for analyzing sexual representations in cinema as well as understanding their relation to oppositional political projects.
