Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to seven essential elements that will illuminate your path to spiritual realization and wise elderhood. What Carl Jung called “the second half of life” has the potential to be a remarkable curriculum for insight and awakening. When wisely understood, the changes inherent in the aging process become stepping-stones to the actualization of our best human qualities: wisdom, lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Author David Chernikoff has spent decades pursuing spiritual study and practice with remarkable teachers, including Ram Dass, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Father Thomas Keating, and Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. In Life, Part Two, he distills lessons from across contemplative traditions to invite readers to embrace seven essential elements of conscious living: embracing the mystery, choosing a vision, cultivating intuitive wisdom, committing to inner work, suffering effectively, serving from the heart, and celebrating the journey. These elements culminate in wise elderhood--a state celebrated by indigenous cultures around the world, yet largely unacknowledged in contemporary Western society. For those of us who aspire to live fully and to love well as we age, Life, Part Two is a lucid guidebook that empowers us to personally thrive and to contribute with ever greater clarity and purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Abraham Lincoln helped create the Republican Party on the eve of the Civil War, his goal was to promote economic opportunity for all Americans, not just the slaveholding Southern planters who steered national politics. Yet, despite the egalitarian dream at the heart of its founding, the Republican Party quickly became mired in a fundamental identity crisis. Would it be the party of democratic ideals? Or would it be the party of moneyed interests? In the century and a half since, Republicans have vacillated between these two poles, with dire economic, political, and moral repercussions for the entire nation. In To Make Men Free, celebrated historian Heather Cox Richardson traces the shifting ideology of the Grand Old Party from the antebellum era to the Great Recession, revealing the insidious cycle of boom and bust that has characterized the Party since its inception. While in office, progressive Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower revived Lincoln's vision of economic freedom and expanded the government, attacking the concentration of wealth and nurturing upward mobility. But they and others like them have been continually thwarted by powerful business interests in the Party. Their opponents appealed to Americans' latent racism and xenophobia to regain political power, linking taxation and regulation to redistribution and socialism. The results of the Party's wholesale embrace of big business are all too familiar: financial collapses like the Panic of 1893, the Great Depression in 1929, and the Great Recession in 2008. With each passing decade, with each missed opportunity and political misstep, the schism within the Republican Party has grown wider, pulling the GOP ever further from its founding principles. Expansive and authoritative, To Make Men Free is a sweeping history of the Party that was once America's greatest political hope -- and, time and time again, has proved its greatest disappointment.

So Pearlie Cook begins her indirect, and devastating exploration of the mystery at the heart of every relationship--how we can ever truly know another person. It is 1953 and Pearlie, a dutiful young housewife, finds herself living in the Sunset District in San Francisco, caring not only for her husband's fragile health, but also for her son, who is afflicted with polio. Then, one Saturday morning, a stranger appears on her doorstep, and everything changes. Lyrical, and surprising, The Story of a Marriage is, in the words of Khaled Housseini, "a book about love, and it is a marvel to watch Greer probe the mysteries of love to such devastating effect."

Besides being written from prison, both letters address Gentile communities learning to live faithful Christian lives. Exploring themes such as God’s eternal plan, the unity of the church, and the fullness of life in Christ, these letters offer a sweeping and still relevant vision of faith in Christ and the church as his body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of Papua provides a comprehensive review of current scientific knowledge on all aspects of the natural history of western (Indonesian) New Guinea. Designed for students of conservation, environmental workers, and academic researchers, it is a richly detailed text, dense with biogeographical data, historical reference, and fresh insight on this complicated and marvelous region. We hope it will serve to raise awareness of Papua on a global as well as local scale, and to catalyze effective conservation of its most precious natural assets. New Guinea is the largest and highest tropical island, and one of the last great wilderness areas remaining on Earth. Papua, the western half of New Guinea, is noteworthy for its equatorial glaciers, its vast forested floodplains, its imposing central mountain range, its Raja Ampat Archipelago, and its several hundred traditional forest-dwelling societies. One of the wildest places left in the world, Papua possesses extraordinary biological and cultural diversity. Today, Papua’s environment is under threat from growing outside pressures to exploit its expansive forests and to develop large plantations of oil palm and biofuels. It is important that Papua’s leadership balance economic development with good resource management, to ensure the long-term well-being of its culturally diverse populace.

Book excerpt: While similar in method to the "activity-based learning" introduced in the first set of books, Urdu for Children: Book II is designed to meet the needs of children seven to eight years of age and older. The students' level is determined by their facility in reading, writing, and speaking Urdu rather than their chronological age. The scope of the topics in Book II is wider than in Book I and the forty stories and poems, most of them original, are more complex and longer. The original artwork is richer and more varied and the English-Urdu and Urdu-English vocabulary lists are more comprehensive. Two volumes of Let's Read Urdu have been added to help children enhance their reading skills while a two-part Workbook provides practice exercises in writing and reinforces the new vocabulary introduced in the texts. The activity-based Teacher's Manual provides detailed lesson plans for each Urdu text. Two CDs accompanying the two volumes of the textbook to help ensure standard pronunciation of words and intonations in sentences, and infuse life into the stories. Original music was composed for the poems, allowing children to sing them to help with memorization. Developed by a team of trained public school teachers with extensive backgrounds in teaching Urdu as a heritage language, the Urdu Language Textbook Series helps meet the needs of a rapidly growing Urdu-speaking community in North America. It is the first step towards helping children develop Urdu linguistic skills so that they can keep their heritage and culture alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assuming that the complex phenomena underlying the operation of the immune system may be better understood through the collaborative efforts of theorists and experimentalists viewing the same phenomena in different ways, the Sante Fe Institute and the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory cosponsored a workshop entitled "Theoretical Immunology." The workshop focused on themes spanning the field of immunology, with emphasis on areas where the theorists have made the most progress. This book covers the discussions a that workshop on the topics of immune surveillance, mathematical models of HIV infection, complexities of antigen-antibody systems, immune suppression and tolerance, and idiotypie networks. In each of these areas there is reason to believe that advances can be made either through interactions among experimentalists and theorists or through the critical look experimentalists and theorists will bring to bear upon one another's work.

Book excerpt: "Beginning in 1993 with Artaud: Blows and Bombs, Stephen Barber has quietly, independently forged one of the most singular and enriching bodies of work in contemporary writing." -David Peace Over the three decades since 1990, Stephen Barber has written many essays and experimental writings around film and digital arts. For the first time, this collection in two parts assembles all of those writings, many otherwise unavailable, over seventy in all. Many of those writings explore unknown elements of vital bodies of work that remain inspirational for contemporary art, writing and film. Others interrogate the transmutations of cities - especially those of Europe and of Japan - across those three decades, anatomizing their urban futures. These writings are often residues from, or accompaniments to, Stephen Barber’s thirty books, short writings which possess their own distinctive and accumulating presence, and can display the interrogative resilience to explore preoccupations with greater intensity and pointedness than an entire book. THE RESIDUES, PART TWO collects 30 writings on subjects including JG Ballard, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Donald Richie, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South had won a resounding victory at Manassas in July of 1861. Since then, however, the fledgling nation has lost huge chunks of territory and strategic military outposts. Jefferson Davis is repeatedly forced to fight with limited supplies of war materials and without reserves. Enemies from the North are not the Confederate presidents only problem. He also has to contend with his proliferating political enemies, and he is forced to face them from an increasingly weakening position. His staunchest ally, Judah Benjamin, who played the martyr and took the blame for the loss of Roanoke Island, also comes under attack, and Davis is forced to make some difficult decisions regarding his minister. Moreover, Benjamins attraction to the First Lady continues to develop as the two are often thrown together socially and politically. Once, when they are working on a coded message to the Confederate minister in France, she breaks into tears and admits to Benjamin that her husband is cold and aloof. He moves to comfort her, but she breaks away and asks him to leave. In the meantime, Davis slave, Rachel, has permitted herself to get romantically involved with Colonel Chestnuts body servant, Lawrence, in an attempt to forget Silas, the beau she left behind at Davis plantation. Silas, however, has run away and joined the Union army. Because of his ties to Rachel, the Union sends him to Richmond to get her to listen in on conversations in the Confederate White House. He manages to displace Lawrence and enlists Rachels help just before General Lee, President Davis, and his ministers gather in the White House to discuss Lees plans to invade the North. Once again, masters and slaves, politicians and generals are inextricably bound together. This time their individual fortunes are propelled relentlessly toward Lees fated meeting with the Union army at Gettysburg.

Book excerpt: Glancing to the left, Jeff was surprised to see the small, white church sitting a hundred feet off Highway 85 in the middle of a field of bright, yellow daffodils. He had never seen so many daffodils in his life. There was nothing around except for the small church in the daffodil-laden field, a parking lot to the rear. He wasn’t sure if he had ever seen a whiter church, it seemed almost to glow in a reflective yellow. The illuminated message sign by the highway is what really captured his attention.
