Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Three Selected Poems And it is plain that, in an age which is apt to believe that poetry and reality are antithetical terms, such uncompromising fusion of the two must be work of the highest value. For the significance Mr. Gibson reads into, or rather, quite strictly, creates in, this every-day prosaic life, is not that which propagandism too easily provides, but the significance of simple, inevitable, tragic morality. There are not many writers living who can reach with such quiet effort the secrets of human nature which lie hidden behind habit and conduct and reasoning. The reader will be disappointed if he reads Mr. Gibson's work in the hope of exciting detail or curious form. What he will find is a remarkable power of creating form as a whole, which perhaps too scrupulously avoids the distraction of detail; and a power of enclosing in that form a wonderfully humane poetry." Included in this selection are several poems which relate to the great war, in which Mr. Gibson served as a private soldier. These occupy a distinctive place, especially in that they emphasise the outrage inflicted by war upon that human personality, to the value of which "Daily Bread" and "Fires" drew attention. "Battle" and "Friends" are indeed a "monument to the wantonness of it all, to the cheapness of life in war, the carelessness as to the individual, the disregard alike of promise and performance, the elimination of personality." Grateful acknowledgment is made to the kindness of Mr. Elkin Mathews in allowing me to reprint poems from "Daily Bread" "Fires," "Thoroughfares," "Borderlands," "Battle," and "Friends"; and to Messrs. Macmillan & Co. for permission to include the poems from "Livelihood" and "Whin." All these are copyright, both in this country and in America 'in the latter case by the Macmillan Company, of New York). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems and Autobiography I was at this time employed by Stedman Co., of Aurora, Indiana, where] subsequently lost my sight. -in the spring of 1872 I met for the first time, Nellie Smith, the woman of my choice. We united with the First Baptist Church of Aurora and were baptized in the Ohio river, February 23, 1873 by Rev. Chas. Ager, pastor, who afterwards united us in marriage, April 16, 1873. On March 22, 1874, Harold, our first born came to bless our little home. But the pleasure of seeing him tome was short. On May 23 following, a sliver of steel from the head of a tool I was using pierced the ball of mv right eye ushering me into lifelong darkness. And were it not that my trust was in God, I scarcely know how the calamity could have been borne. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A Penguin Classic A best seller in his lifetime though neglected in recent years, Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) is due to be restored to his rightful place in literary history as one of the first great American Modernist poets. His poetry was revolutionary, though it looked deceptively conventional because it was written in metre and rhyme. He cast aside the stiff archaism and prettiness favoured by his contemporaries, instead employing everyday language with dramatic power, wit, and sensitivity. His lyric poems illuminate ordinary people, especially the downtrodden, the bereft, and the mistunderstood. In the process he created the gallery of character portraits for which he is most fondly remembered, among them Eben Flood, Aunt Imogen, Isaac and Archibald, Miniver Cheevy and Richard Cory. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet, journalist, and crime novelist, Kenneth Fearing wrote poems filled with the jargon of advertising and radio broadcasts and tabloid headlines, sidewalk political oratory, and the pop tunes on the jukebox. Seeking out what he called “the new and complex harmonies . . . of a strange and still more complex age,” he evoked the jitters of the Depression and the war years in a voice alternately sardonic and melancholy, and depicted a fragmenting urban world bombarded by restless desires and unnerving fears. But, in the words of editor Robert Polito, “Fearing’s poems carry no whiff of the curio or relic. If anything, his poems . . . insinuated an emerging media universe that poetry still only fitfully acknowledges.” This new selection foregrounds the energy and originality of Fearing’s prophetic poetry, with its constant formal experimenting and its singular note of warning: “We must be prepared for anything, anything, anything.” As a chronicler of mass culture and its discontents, Fearing is a strangely solitary figure who cannot be ignored. About the American Poets Project Elegantly designed in compact editions, printed on acid-free paper, and textually authoritative, the American Poets Project makes available the full range of the American poetic accomplishment, selected and introduced by today’s most discerning poets and critics.

Book excerpt: Living in a revolutionary age, Coleridge's poetry was written in a spirit of moral and emotional inquiry into the absolutes of the human condition. He is best known for his visionary poetry ('Kubla Khan') and his ballads ('The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'), but he used and transformed a variety of verse forms, from the sonnet to the conversation poem, on subjects as diverse as nature, love, and politics. This selection calls attention to the range of Coleridge's work, its strong autobiographical content, and its artistic development throughout his career. The old chronological form has been abandoned and the poems are organised according to genre, with each section displaying its own individual development in craft and theme.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Heinrich Heine: Three Hundred and Twenty-Five Poems, Selected and Translated Sharp, in particular, wound up his book with a rapt appreciation, ending in a flourish of rhetorical trumpets, and concluded the matter. But it needs something more than a list of antitheses to understand this restless genius, a confusing figure who has been paired with such names as Catullus, Aristophanes, Burns, Rabelais, Cervantes, Voltaire, Swift, Villon - in fact to every writer who is known as a master of either simplicity or irony. It needs a close and interpretive reading of his "Book of Songs"; it needs a general knowledge of the politically experimental and altogether chaotic times of which he was so fiery a product; and it needs, first and last, the constant reminder that Heine was a sensitive Jew, born in a savagely anti-semitic country that taught him, even as a child, that "Jew" and "pariah" were synonymous terms. The traditions and tyrannies that weighed down on all the German people of his day were slight compared to the oppressions imposed upon the Jews. The demands upon them, the petty persecutions, the rigorous orders and taboos would form an incredible list. Let these few facts suffice: In Frankfort, when Heine was a boy, no Jew might enter a park or pleasure resort; no Jew might leave his ghetto after four o'clock on a Sunday afternoon; and only twenty-four Jews were allowed to marry in one year. In such an atmosphere Heine received his heritage of hate and his baptism of fire. A great deal of literary nonsense and general confusion has resulted because so many of Heine's critics and biographers have taken him at his own valuation. Book excerpt: Dryden: Selected Poems is drawn from Paul Hammond and David Hopkins's remarkable five-volume The Poems of John Dryden, and includes a generous selection of his most important work. The great satires, MacFlecknoe and Absalom and Achitophel, are included in full, as are his religious poemsReligio Laici and The Hind and the Panther, along with a number of Dryden's translations from Horace, Ovid, Homer, and Chaucer. Each poem is accompanied by a headnote, which gives details of composition, publication, and reception. The first-rate annotations provide information on matters of interpretation and give details of allusions that might prove baffling to contemporary readers. Some 300 years after his death, Dryden: Selected Poems will enable new generations of readers to discover the poet of whom Eliot wrote: 'we cannot fully enjoy or rightly estimate a hundred years of English poetry unless we fully enjoy Dryden'.

Book excerpt: An acclaimed translation of the best work of the passionate Russian poet An admired contemporary of Rilke, Akhmatova, and Mandelstam, Marina Tsvetaeva was a witness to the political turmoil and the social devastation wrought by the Russian Revolution and a powerfully inspired chronicler of a difficult life and exile sustained by poetry. Pasternak "was immediately overcome by the immense lyrical power of her poetic form. It... had spring living from experience—personal, and neither narrow-chested nor short of breath from line to line but rich and compact and enveloping" For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langston Hughes electrified readers and launched a renaissance in Black writing in America—the poems in this collection were chosen by Hughes himself shortly before his death and represent stunning work from his entire career. The poems Hughes wrote celebrated the experience of invisible men and women: of slaves who "rushed the boots of Washington"; of musicians on Lenox Avenue; of the poor and the lovesick; of losers in "the raffle of night." They conveyed that experience in a voice that blended the spoken with the sung, that turned poetic lines into the phrases of jazz and blues, and that ripped through the curtain separating high from popular culture. They spanned the range from the lyric to the polemic, ringing out "wonder and pain and terror—and the marrow of the bone of life." The collection includes "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "The Weary Blues," "Still Here," "Song for a Dark Girl," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Refugee in America." It gives us a poet of extraordinary range, directness, and stylistic virtuosity.
