Book Synopsis Selected Poetry by : Samuel Coleridge
Download or read book Selected Poetry written by Samuel Coleridge and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in a revolutionary age, Coleridge's poetry was written in a spirit of moral and emotional inquiry into the absolutes of the human condition. He is best known for his visionary poetry ('Kubla Khan') and his ballads ('The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'), but he used and transformed a variety of verse forms, from the sonnet to the conversation poem, on subjects as diverse as nature, love, and politics. This selection calls attention to the range of Coleridge's work, its strong autobiographical content, and its artistic development throughout his career. The old chronological form has been abandoned and the poems are organised according to genre, with each section displaying its own individual development in craft and theme.
Download or read book Selected Poetry written by Goethe and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Shall I embrace you, must I let you go? Again you haunt me: come then, hold me fast!' Goethe viewed the writing of poetry as essentially autobiographical and the works selected in this volume represent over sixty years in the life of the poet. In early poems such as 'Prometheus' he rails against religion in an almost ecstatic fervour, while 'To the Moon' is an enigmatic meditation on the end of a love affair. The Roman Elegies show Goethe's use of Classical metres in homage to abcient Rome and its poets, and 'The Diary' , supressed for more than a century, is a narrative poem whose eroticism is unusually combined with its morality. Arranged chronologically, David Luke's verse translations are set alonjgside the German orginals to give a picture of Goethe's poetic development. This edition also includes an introduction and notes placing the poems in the context of the poet's life and times.
Book Synopsis Selected Poetry by : Cecilio GarcÕa Camarillo
Download or read book Selected Poetry written by Cecilio GarcÕa Camarillo and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2000-04-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the ñChicano NationÍs cultural attach?î and the ñChicano Renaissance Man,î Cecilio GarcÕa-Camarillo served as a central figure in the flourishing of artistic creativity in the late 1960s and the 1970s known as the Chicano Movement. As a publisher, editor, and radio personality, he brought to the publicÍs attention literary works and people that have since become legend, lore, and canon. He exerted cultural leadership not only through his editing of El MagazÕn, Caracol, and Rayas, but in his total dedication to his own poetry, which appeared sparsely in his magazines, but largely in his own hand-stitched chapbooks and through his preferred medium: oral performance. Ironically, GarcÕa-Camarillo, a consummate editor, was diffident about or uninterested in publishing his own works. Thus, for the most part, they have remained only in the memories of those who witnessed their recital; they are also patent strains in the conscience and aesthetics of the many poets he influenced. At last GarcÕa-Camarillo has consented to the publication of selected poems spanning his decades of creativity. In this volume are united works that appeared in thirteen short-run chapbooks that he distributed among friends: ZafaÍo, Crickets, Burning Snow, Carambola, Hang a Snake, Ecstasy, Puro Pedo, and other magical collections. Here are revealed in full GarcÕa-CamarilloÍs gifts to all lovers of poetry: surrealism and social commitment united, joy in poetic discovery, explorations of the terrain between two languages, and an embrace of all people, all cultures, and their creative visions.

His life as a soldier and government administrator allowed him to travel to Brazil, Africa, and India. Though from the periphery of France's colonial empire, he ultimately became a member of the Académie Française. Despite his reaching that pinnacle of respectability, some of his poetry was banned after his death. This edition includes poems from the Poésies érotiques and Élégies, which established Parny's reputation; the Chansons madécasses ("Madagascar Songs"), which were influential in the development of the prose poem; five of his published letters, written in a mixture of prose and verse; the narrative poem Le Voyage de Céline; and selections from his sardonic, anticlerical later poetry. Book Synopsis Selected Poems of Edith Wharton by : Edith Wharton
Download or read book Selected Poems of Edith Wharton written by Edith Wharton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edith Wharton, the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with her novel The Age of Innocence, was also a brilliant poet. This revealing collection of 134 poems brings together a fascinating array of her verse—including fifty poems that have never before been published. The celebrated American novelist and short story writer Edith Wharton, author of The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Age of Innocence, was also a dedicated, passionate poet. A lover of words, she read, studied, and composed poetry all of her life, publishing her first collection of poems at the age of sixteen. In her memoir, A Backward Glance, Wharton declared herself dazzled by poetry; she called it her “chiefest passion and greatest joy.” The 134 selected poems in this volume include fifty published for the first time. Wharton’s poetry is arranged thematically, offering context as the poems explore new facets of her literary ability and character. These works illuminate a richer, sometimes darker side of Wharton. Her subjects range from the public and political—her first published poem was about a boy who hanged himself in jail—to intimate lyric poems expressing heartbreak, loss, and mortality. She wrote frequently about works of art and historical figures and places, and some of her most striking work explores the origins of creativity itself. These selected poems showcase Wharton’s vivid imagination and her personal experience. Relatively overlooked until now, her poetry and its importance in her life provide an enlightening lens through which to view one of the finest writers of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: "Here is Creeley at his skillfully selected best: full of the melodies of plain speech, concise yet resonant with emotion."--Juliana Spahr, author of This Connection of Everyone with Lungs "So fantastically simple and so satisfyingly complicated, these poems band together like the days in 'One Day': 'One day after another-/ perfect./ They all fit.'"--John Ashbery "Beautifully edited by Ben Friedlander with tenderness, intelligence, and care. A superb selection, well-introduced. Selected Poems provides a great sense of the range of Creeley's accomplishment--these poems among the most important of our time--a way of writing with the hesitations and grace of a new-found line, thinking informed by sources from Emily Dickinson to Charlie Parker. Selected Poems is at once a tribute to Creeley, a perfect introduction for new readers, and a valuable distillation for those who have already acquired a taste for Creeley's poetry. The perfect assembly to and for one so fond of saying 'onward.' We can now go onward with these selected poems, onward with these well-chosen words, with thanks to Robert Creeley and to Ben Friedlander."--Hank Lazer, author of The New Spirit "Benjamin Friedlander, himself a fine poet-critic and a great connoisseur of Creeley's poetry, has put together a superb selection."--Marjorie Perloff "An excellent selection and introduction. It is an edition that acknowledges work that has defined the poet's career while offering a new narrative for the entire oeuvre. It will join UC Press's distinguished and definitive editionsof postwar poetry and will provide us all with a summary guide to Creeley's best work."--Michael Davidson "In a quiet moment I hear Bob pause where I never would have expected it. Such resolve. Such heart. And an ear to reckon with. No truly further American poem without his."--Clark Coolidge, author of Counting on Planet Zero
