Book Synopsis How Societies Remember by : Paul Connerton
Download or read book How Societies Remember written by Paul Connerton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-11-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In treating memory as a cultural rather than an individual faculty, this book provides an account of how bodily practices are transmitted in, and as, traditions. Most studies of memory as a cultural faculty focus on written, or inscribed transmissions of memories. Paul Connerton, on the other hand, concentrates on bodily (or incorporated) practices, and so questions the currently dominant idea that literary texts may be taken as a metaphor for social practices generally. The author argues that images of the past and recollected knowledge of the past are conveyed and sustained by ritual performances and that performative memory is bodily. Bodily social memory is an essential aspect of social memory, but it is an aspect which has until now been badly neglected. An innovative study, this work should be of interest to researchers into social, political and anthropological thought as well as to graduate and undergraduate students.
Book Synopsis Ceremonies for Real Life by : Carine Fabius
Download or read book Ceremonies for Real Life written by Carine Fabius and published by Council Oak Books. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing ceremonies makes me feel like I have a say in how my life turns out. It makes me feel like I have some form of control in how it all plays out. Taking part in a ceremony means I am asking for help. I put in my request, back it up with the power of my creative intention, and then I try to surrender to the weave already in progress. At least when I am clever, I surrender. Because how I get there or how quickly I arrive is best left in more experienced hands!
Book Synopsis Passage Rites by : Michael W. Crabtree
Download or read book Passage Rites written by Michael W. Crabtree and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is January 1978 when Michael Crabtree leaves his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia, with a backpack, one hundred dollars, a notebook of poems, a guitar case, and his lost dreams. Having recently lost his athletic scholarship at North Carolina State University due to a football injury, Michael decides to hitchhike to Houston, Texas, to seek work in the oilfields. In his memoir Passage Rites: Adversity's Challenge, Michael chronicles how, halfway through his first year in Houston, he decides to return home to continue his college education. But everything changes the morning of December 30, 1978, when two Virginia Beach policemen knock on his parents' door and place him under arrest for armed robbery a crime he never committed. As Michael is thrown into a jail cell to await his fate, he rings in 1979 with his fellow prisoners and quietly wonders what will become of his life. As he returns to Texas to face his accusers, Michael soon realizes that his journey to the truth will not be easy. This is the inspiring true story of a young man who, when he was faced with an unjust incarceration, adversity, and the theft of his innocence, never gave up.
