Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian spoken in most of Tuscany is characterized by a number of peculiar pronunciations which for over half a century Romance scholars have explained by a theory of linguistic substratum influence. This theory postulates that present-day Tuscan pronunciation is a survival of the 'foreign accent' with which the ancient Etruscans must have spoken Latin when Rome first began to extend its power and language over the rest of Italy. Professor Izzo has undertaken a new and thorough investigation of modern Tuscan pronunciation, disproving this hypothesis and providing a definitive conclusion to the debate. He delineates clearly the errors in reasoning of those who trace the Tuscan pronunciation to an Etruscan influence, and presents his conclusions objectively. This study will interest Romance linguists, especially historians of the Italian language; but it will also interest historical linguists in general, for by disproving one of the most plausible and best-documented cases of alleged substratum influence, it casts doubt on many other cases where such influence has been claimed with little evidence.

Book excerpt: "Etruscan Places" is a historical and anthropological guide into the world of the Etruscans people. The Etruscans, as everyone knows, were the people who occupied the middle of Italy in early Roman days and whom the Romans, in their usual neighbourly fashion, wiped out entirely in order to make room for Rome with a very big R. They couldn't have wiped them all out, there were too many of them. But they did wipe out the Etruscan existence as a nation and a people. However, this seems to be the inevitable result of expansion with a big E, which is the sole raison d'étre of people like the Romans. The main source of information we have today about the Etruscan way of life is the artifacts found in their tombs, which forms the focus for this book.

Book excerpt: Searching for the elusive criminals who left her famous father comatose after a bomb blast, cultural arts historian and quasi-archeologist, Amanda Oliver stumbles into a world of thugs, tomb robbers, obsessed archeologists and greedy collectors seeking a priceless Etruscan sarcophagus. Putty Face's footsteps crunched on the gravel behind me. His erratic breathing, panting like a thirsty animal, paralyzed me. I opened my mouth to protest but no sound came. In a split second, the pressure of his hands on my back told his intentions. He shoved hard. I pitched forward and the ground under my feet disappeared. My arms flailed clumsily when I grabbed out for something to stop my fall but met only air. His fierce thrust sped my descent and I tumbled uncontrollably, bouncing off bare rock outcroppings, each slam increasing my dizziness, bruising and weakening me. Mercifully, I blacked out.

Book excerpt: Every society builds, and many, if not all, utilize architectural structures as markers to define place, patron, or experience. Often we consider these architectural markers as “monuments” or “monumental” buildings. Ancient Rome, in particular, is a society recognized for the monumentality of its buildings. While few would deny that the term “monumental” is appropriate for ancient Roman architecture, the nature of this characterization and its development in pre-Roman Italy is rarely considered carefully. What is “monumental” about Etruscan and early Roman architecture? Delving into the crucial period before the zenith of Imperial Roman building, Monumentality in Etruscan and Early Roman Architecture addresses such questions as, “What factors drove the emergence of scale as a defining element of ancient Italian architecture?” and “How did monumentality arise as a key feature of Roman architecture?” Contributors Elizabeth Colantoni, Anthony Tuck, Nancy A. Winter, P. Gregory Warden, John N. Hopkins, Penelope J. E. Davies, and Ingrid Edlund-Berry reflect on the ways in which ancient Etruscans and Romans utilized the concepts of commemoration, durability, and visibility to achieve monumentality. The editors’ preface and introduction underscore the notion of architectural evolution toward monumentality as being connected to the changing social and political strategies of the ruling elites. By also considering technical components, this collection emphasizes the development and the ideological significance of Etruscan and early Roman monumentality from a variety of viewpoints and disciplines. The result is a broad range of interpretations celebrating both ancient and modern perspectives.

In A.D. 197, Emperor Septimius Severus led one of the largest invasion forces in Rome’s history against the Parthian Empire. Among the men of thirty-three legions is Lucius Metellus Anguis, a young man from an ancient Equestrian family. Against the wishes of his conservative father, Lucius is determined to pursue a career in the military and resurrect the glory of his family name on the battlefield rather than the marble of the Senate. However, as in all conflicts, Lucius’ ideals and his faith are challenged as he witnesses the worst in humanity. As the imperial legions fight their way through Mesopotamia to the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon, Lucius discovers the inner strength that may well ensure that this young dragon rises from the ranks of Rome’s eagles. Can a man survive the trials of war unscathed? Do the Gods indeed favour the bold? March to war with Rome’s legions and find out! A Dragon among the Eagles is the first novel in Adam Alexander Haviaras’ ground-breaking Eagles and Dragons historical fantasy series. Book excerpt: This fascinating volume contains a collection of travel writings by D. H. Lawrence, first published after his death in 1932. In this text Lawrence compares the vibrant world of the Etruscan civilization with the dilapidation of Benito Mussolini's Italy during the late 1920s. The Etruscan civilization is the relatively modern moniker given to the civilization originating from ancient Italy in the areas of modern Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. Not much is known of the Etruscans, and in this fascinating exploration of their culture, Lawrence pieces together what he can in order to furnish a unique insight into this lost race. The chapters of this volume include: D. H. Lawrence, Cervereri, Targuinia, The Painted Tombs of Tarquinia, Vulci, and Volterra. We are republishing this antiquarian volume now complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.

Forced on an unwanted journey by foot, cart, barge and ship, manipulated by powerful kings, cunning men, women and gods, Scribe Larthia faces torture, rape, exile, prostitution and the knife. Odyssey of an Etruscan Noblewoman is an action-packed adventure of an unusual woman’s survival in the sixth century B.C.E. when all scribes were male. Larthia--married, childless Etruscan noblewoman, disguises herself as a man to exercise her gift of scribing. Opening the Tomb of the Ancestors marks her fate. Abducted and forced on an unwanted journey, Larthia uses her charm, sex and scribing tools to outwit her enemies from Tarchna (modern Tarquinia), to Rome, Sicily and on to Athens and beyond through the turbulent Mediterranean waters. Against her will, she voyages to Egypt where she is initiated as priestess into the rites of the Cult of Isis. Helped by a mortal god and sponsored by the pharaoh, Larthia maneuvers her way back to Etruria only to find chilling surprises. Aided by a stranger, the merchant-vintner from Curtun, she must challenge destiny and discover where she will be for eternity. Rosalind Burgundy is to the Etruscans what Mary Renault is to the Greeks, and Colleen McCullough is to the Romans. SEE AUTHOR DISPLAY WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT Odyssey of an Etruscan Noblewoman Odyssey of an Etruscan Noblewoman is a wonderful narrative with realistic characters, filled with excitement and surprises to satisfy any reader. It is indeed a well-written book. Ralph Ferraro, Director The Italian American Press www.italianamericanpress.com ...Odyssey is a book that draws the reader in immediately and takes them deeper and deeper into life of early Italy, the people and their rituals. Through Burgundy’s creation of Larthia, we are treated to a unique experience of a noblewoman’s trials and triumphs despite much adversity. This book would go well with a feast fit for a king (or princess!), goblets of wine and an occasional cold wind blowing. Lane Wiley, Book Reviewer, Sierra Mountain Times Newspaper Twain Harte, California Odyssey of an Etruscan Noblewoman is a universal tale of a woman’s strengths, weaknesses and will to survive—that is as timely today as it was centuries ago during an era historically dominated by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Charles K. South Palm Beach, Florida A real page-turner! I couldn’t wait to see how Larthia would deal with each new dilemma she faced, and in each case it was cleverly and unexpectedly. An exciting read. Along the way, the author includes tidbits of Etruscan, Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultures so that you learn about them almost without realizing it. I wholeheartedly recommend this book! Dean R., Durham, North Carolina The author’s passion for Etruscan history must have led her on a mysterious and very personal journey back in time. Odyssey of an Etruscan Noblewoman reveals Ms. Burgundy’s true inner self as she leads the reader onto her fantastic adventure and into the heart and soul of her character. A niche book that will go mainstream!
