Book excerpt: In 1980 the book Judith Turner Photographs Five Architects was internationally recognized by architects who admired and valued Turner's unique way of seeing and photographing architecture. This new book contains photographs taken between 1974 and 2009 of buildings designed by 17 well-known architects including: Peter Eisenman, Louis Kahn, Fumihiko Maki, Norman Foster, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Alvar Aalto, Shigeru Ban and Renzo Piano. From the beginning of her career, Turner has used architecture as subject matter. Ambiguity has always been a hallmark of her work where solids become voids, causing positive and negative to reverse. The photos are small fragments of architecture taken out of context. Through her eyes, the subject is decomposed and recreated, assuming a new meaning. The photographs are quiet, yet dynamic, beautifully framed compositions. Architects have commented that she exposes elements of their work they never imagined existed. Thus, while using architecture as subject matter to invent her own worlds, Turner is also revealing some of its inherent complexities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architect Turner Brooks has quietly built a practice in rural New England that is comprised primarily of residential projects. By combining vernacular elements and traditional materials with his unique view of the relationship of buildings to the landscape, he has created a body of work that contains some of the most interesting small-scale single-family houses being built today. "I see my buildings as compact bodies-taut, stretched, swelling-objects with a strong sense of directionality, isolated on the landscape which they inhabit easily, but from which they are read as distinctly separate. They are often built on the scruffy abandoned edges of this great agricultural landscape-they hover slightly and are 'placed' on the landscape without any presumptions or ambitions of transforming it. They are simply there, containers that outside their own tight wrappers, assume no accommodation to or from their surroundings." The houses themselves -- crouching animal-like in their surroundings -- form a sort of architectural bestiary. Among the projects featured in Turner Brooks: Work are built works: McLane House, Starksboro, Vermont; Peek House, Monkton, Vermont; Gates Center, College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine; Lombard/Miller House, Westby, Wisconsin; and unbuilt projects: Lobsterman houses, and Provincetown Eugene O'Neill Theater, Massachusetts. Heavily illustrated in color and black-and-white, this monograph brings to light the work of one of the most interesting American architects working today.

Book excerpt: Winner, Alice Davis Hitchcock Award, Society of Architectural Historians. Campus is an exciting guide to a distinctive type of architectural planning, one that has reflected changing educational ideals from Colonial times to the present, and - as the embodiment of the ideal community - has often expressed utopian social visions of America. Organized chronologically, Campus looks at new patterns of open planning at Harvard, William and Mary, and Yale; the ambitious scale and dramatic setting of schools such as the University of Virginia; the park-like campuses of the land-grant colleges that represented a democratic reaction against elitist traditions; the Beaux-Arts campuses of Columbia University and the universities of California and Minnesota; the enclosed Gothic quadrangle at Universities like Princeton; and at the more recent flexible and dynamic campus plans that are a response to new educational needs. Among the architects and planners whose work is examined are Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Alexander Jackson Davis, Frederick Law Olmsted, Ralph Adams Cram, Cope & Stewardson, Charles Z. Klauder, James Gamble Rogers, Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, William Turnbull, and Charles Moore. Paul Venable Turner is Professor of Architectural History at Stanford University. An Architectural History Foundation Book.

Book excerpt: Garden design began in West Asia and spread through Europe. This book tells how, in the British Isles, it flourished to an extraordinary degree. Following the historical method in Tom Turnere(tm)s books on Asian gardens (2010) and European gardens (2011), it uses almost 1000 colour photographs, plans and style diagrams to provide a word and image history of garden design. Individual chapters cover the Celtic, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romantic, Arts and Crafts, Modern and Postmodern periods.
