These are first (strange to say i) her financial position, and, second (almost stranger i) her prestige. These have saved her from annihilation in the past times and again, and may save her yet. Let us see what they mean, and what limits, if any, there are to their potency. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Exactly, said the Vali, and that will at once be understood as a seditious allusion to the Sublime Ottoman Government. No, it cannot be. And to show that his decision was irrevocable he again assumed his virtuous air, and said, All civilised countries are governed by law, and I am surprised that one who has lived in the Ottoman dominions as long as yourself should suppose that Turkish officials can be induced by hopes of personal advantage to neglect the regulations issued for their guidance. Law and obedience are the foundation of the State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One of these is spoken of as Turkey in Europe, and the other as Turkey in Asia. They are held together under one ruler called the Sultan. He has absolute power over his people, and can do with them as he likes. One word from his lips is enough to cause the death of any of his subjects. None dare to disobey him. It is because his rule is not the best and wisest, and also because his kingdom is always in danger from the countries around it, that the Sultan is often spoken of as The Sick Man of Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands, Turkey The Empire of Turkey, through which I propose to conduct you, stretches over portions of Europe and Asia - the slender thread of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles being the division between the two continents. A rapid current rushes through these channels, but in some places they are so narrow that you can shout across from Europe to Asia, and it is no uncommon thing to hear the dogs barking from the other side. Turkey in Europe Spreads northwards from these points up to Bulgaria, and consists of a long strip of country extending from the Black Sea to the Adriatic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turkish Empire Its Growth and Decay The favour with which, two years ago, my book on The Partitions of Poland was received by the public has induced me to devote the interval to a study of the history of another State which, in modern times, has almost disappeared from the map of Europe - namely Turkey. The subject is one in which I have for many years past taken great interest. In the course of a long life!, I have witnessed the greater part of the events which have resulted in the loss to that State of all its Christian provinces in Europe and all its Moslem provinces in Africa, leaving to it only its capital and a small part of Thrace in Europe, and its still wide possessions in Asia. So long ago, also, as in 1855 and 1857, I spent some time at Constantinople and travelled in Bulgaria and Greece, and was able to appreciate the effects of Turkish rule. As a result, I gave a full support, in 1876, to Mr. Gladstone in his efforts to secure the independence of Bulgaria and in 1879 was an active member of a committee, presided over by Lord Rosebery, which had for its object the extension of the kingdom of Greece so as to include the provinces inhabited by Greeks still suffering under Turkish rule. In 1887 and 1890 I again visited the East and travelled over the same ground as thirty years earlier, and was able to observe the immense improvements which had been effected in the provinces that had gained independence, and how little change had taken place at Constantinople. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey and Its People Regarded in reference to religion it may be noted that the great majority of the inhabitants of asia-minor are Moslems, while those inhabiting European Turkey are mostly Christians. Diversity in race and religion and the long-enduring traditions of ancient peoples make up a population which is a singular medley. The Sultan rules over a number of peoples with varying aims and usually with opposing interests. Even before the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, the influx of foreign pe0p1es was greater than the empire could absorb so as to make them its loyal subjects. After the conquest, the difficulties of welding the various elements of the population into a nation with common aspirations were enormously increased by the Islamism of the conquering race. Indeed, with the exception of certain spasmodic efforts to unify the races into one people, no serious attempt was ever made to do so. It is of these various peoples that I propose to write. Most of them have ideals to which they consciously or um consciously endeavour to attain. Knowing their efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Vol. 1: Russia, Tartary, and Turkey; Section 1 The unsettled state of English orthography, as far as it affects the introduction of Russian names, produces considerable embarrassment to the writer who whishes to follow a fixed mle. Upon this subject it not only happens that no two authors agree, but the same author is inconsistent. Jonas Hanway, whose writings are more accurate than those of an other English traveller who has visited Russia, ma be considered as ording, perhaps, the best model in this respect, but e is not confident.'
