Book excerpt: Comparisons were made between experiment and theory to assess the capability of turbulent mixing models to predict the fluid flow-properties in the mixing region of both shear layers and jets. Jets exiting into both moving and quiescent streams were investigated. Attention was centered on two turbulence models: (i) k epsilon two and (ii) k omega prime. The same numerical flow field code was utilized with both turbulence models thus allowing a direct comparison of the turbulence models without fear of difference in the numerics masking the results. Results showed significant errors can be made when utilizing these models for prediction of shear flows of interest. The flow structure for these shear flows is in no way accounted for by the models and hence poor predictions result. It is felt the basic vortex structure will have to be modeled before significant improvement in the modeling will occur. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Science & Applications of Heat and Mass Transfer: Reports, Reviews, & Computer Programs, Volume 6: Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes focuses on the formation, properties, characteristics, and reactions of turbulent jets and plumes. The selection first offers information on the mechanics of turbulent buoyant jets and plumes and turbulent buoyant jets in shallow fluid layers. Discussions focus on submerged buoyant jets into shallow fluid, horizontal surface or interface jets into shallow layers, fundamental considerations, and turbulent buoyant jets (forced plumes). The manuscript then examines a turbulence model for buoyant flows and its application to vertical buoyant jets, including mathematical model, calculation of vertical buoyant jets, and explanation of velocity and temperature spreading in pure jets and pure plumes. The publication is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in turbulent buoyant jets and plumes.

Book excerpt: We present results from numerical simulations of the evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for an unforced, subsonic, compressible axisymmetric, spatially-evolving shear layer. In addition, we study the effect of small, random pressure fluctuations at the nozzle orifice on the growth of the mixing layers. These fluctuations model inflow perturbations in experimental flows arising from turbulence and boundary layers in the nozzle. The finite-difference numerical model used to perform the simulations solves the two-dimensional time-dependent conservation equations for an ideal fluid using the Flux-Corrected Transport algorithm and timestep-splitting techniques. No subgrid turbulence model has been included. In the absence of perturbations, the calculations indicate that the large scale development of the unforced jet shear layer has an underlying degree of organization. This is the result of a feedback mechanism in which the shear layer ahead of nozzle edge is modulated by the far field induced gy the mergings on downstream, near the end of the potential core of the jet. The studies with random high frequency perturbations on the inflow velocity show that they effectively tend to break the temporal correlations between the structures. Keywords: Coherent structures; Free Shear flows.

Book excerpt: The modeling of turbulent free shear flows is crucial to the simulation of many aerospace applications, yet often receives less attention than the modeling of wall boundary layers. Thus, while turbulence model development in general has proceeded very slowly in the past twenty years, progress for free shear flows has been even more so. This paper highlights some of the fundamental issues in modeling free shear flows for propulsion applications, presents a review of past modeling efforts, and identifies areas where further research is needed. Among the topics discussed are differences between planar and axisymmetric flows, development versus self-similar regions, the effect of compressibility and the evolution of compressibility corrections, the effect of temperature on jets, and the significance of turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers for reacting shear flows. Large eddy simulation greatly reduces the amount of empiricism in the physical modeling, but is sensitive to a number of numerical issues. This paper includes an overview of the importance of numerical scheme, mesh resolution, boundary treatment, sub-grid modeling, and filtering in conducting a successful simulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of any inhomogeneous free-turbulence flow in an incompressible fluid is predicted through the use of a general self-preservation hypothesis. The analytical solutions are verified by comparison with experimental data on mean-flow and turbulence characteristics of plane and axisymmetric jets in coaxial parallel flow with and without confinement, of an axisymmetric jet in a cross flow, and of the wake behind a self-propelled body. Emphasis is placed on the distinct turbulence structure of the various flows as revealed by the different axial variations of a shear parameter relating turbulence shear to mean velocity. The satisfactory predictions obtained by the new approach make it appear to have a more general application (e.g., to plumes and wall jets) than the examples chosen might imply. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions to the BRITE-EURAM 3rd Framework Programme ETMA and extended articles of the TMA-Workshop. It focusses on turbulence modelling techniques suitable to use in typical flow configurations, with emphasis on compressibility effects and inherent unsteadiness. These methodologies are applied to the Navier-Stokes equations, involving various turbulence modelling levels from algebraic to RSM. Basic turbulent flows in aeronautics are considered; mixing layers, wall-flows (flat-plate, backward-facing step, ramp, bump), and more complex configurations (bump, aerofoil). A critical assessment of the turbulence modelling performances is offered, based on previous results and on the experimental data-base of this research programme. The ETMA results figure in the data-base constituted by all partners and organized by INRIA

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this work is to provide accurate numerical solutions for selected flow fields and to compare and evaluate the performance of selected turbulence models with experimental results. Four popular turbulence models have been tested and validated against experimental data often turbulent flows. The models are: (1) the two-equation k-epsilon model of Wilcox, (2) the two-equation k-epsilon model of Launder and Sharma, (3) the two-equation k-omega/k-epsilon SST model of Menter, and (4) the one-equation model of Spalart and Allmaras. The flows investigated are five free shear flows consisting of a mixing layer, a round jet, a plane jet, a plane wake, and a compressible mixing layer; and five boundary layer flows consisting of an incompressible flat plate, a Mach 5 adiabatic flat plate, a separated boundary layer, an axisymmetric shock-wave/boundary layer interaction, and an RAE 2822 transonic airfoil. The experimental data for these flows are well established and have been extensively used in model developments. The results are shown in the following four sections: Part A describes the equations of motion and boundary conditions; Part B describes the model equations, constants, parameters, boundary conditions, and numerical implementation; and Parts C and D describe the experimental data and the performance of the models in the free-shear flows and the boundary layer flows, respectively.
