Book excerpt: An important task in seismic reflection imaging is to estimate subsurface structures from the prestack data. This means that the reflection events in the recorded data have to be transformed into images in the depth domain, the reflectors. A geometrically appealing approach for the corresponding process is Kirchhoff migration which is based on an integral solution of the wave equation. Applied in its original purely kinematic form, this process provides a structural image of the target region under investigation. However, Kirchhoff migration is also able to handle the amplitude-related aspects of wave propagation, thus allowing to assign physically sound amplitude values to reflector images. In such a true-amplitude migration, the geometrical spreading effects are removed from the input data during the imaging process and, thus, reflector amplitudes become basically a measure of the angle-dependent reflection coefficient. Commencing with the basics of wave propagation and ray theory, a complete description of Kirchhoff migration is presented. By relating the strict mathematical derivation of true-amplitude Kirchhoff migration to clear geometrical concepts, the gap between the originally graphical migration schemes and the nowadays available analytical descriptions based on a stationary-phase evaluation is closed. Further aspects relevant to the correct recovery of amplitudes in depth migration, such as the handling of topography and irregular geometries, are explained in a mathematical as well as in a geometrical manner. Finally, Kirchhoff migration is integrated into a seismic reflection imaging workflow based on the data-driven common-reflection-surface (CRS) stack method.

Reflection seismics plays an important role in the exploration industry for the search of hydrocarbon reservoirs. A central process of the reflection seismic method is migration, the transformation of the recorded and processed seismic field data into an image of the subsurface. In this thesis, I focus on a migration technique that is widely investigated and frequently applied: true-amplitude Kirchhoff migration. The term true-amplitude implies that the effect of geometrical spreading is removed in the migration process and, hence, amplitudes in the final subsurface image become a measure of the angle-dependent reflection coefficient. This allows to study physical properties of reflectors in the earth and, thus, to characterize adjacent rock formations which is crucial for successful interpretation and exploration. As main result of this thesis, I present a new strategy to improve the efficiency as well as the image quality of (true-amplitude) Kirchhoff migration: making use of the kinematic wavefield attributes obtained with the Common-Reflection-Surface (CRS) stack method allows to determine minimum migration apertures. Furthermore, I show how to extend existing migration implementations to correctly handle data recorded with irregular acquisition geometry on a measurement surface with topographic variations as these aspects have a decisive impact on the final amplitudes.

The special issue begins with papers dealing with the study and the application of the ray methods. Problems such as coupling of quasi-shear waves or smoothing of models for effective ray computations are dealt with. Applications of the ray methods in seismic exploration are presented. Further, directional wavefield decomposition, phase space, path integral and parabolic equation methods are discussed. Book Synopsis Seismic Imaging and Inversion: Volume 1 by : Robert H. Stolt
Download or read book Seismic Imaging and Inversion: Volume 1 written by Robert H. Stolt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracting information from seismic data requires knowledge of seismic wave propagation and reflection. The commonly used method involves solving linearly for a reflectivity at every point within the Earth, but this book follows an alternative approach which invokes inverse scattering theory. By developing the theory of seismic imaging from basic principles, the authors relate the different models of seismic propagation, reflection and imaging - thus providing links to reflectivity-based imaging on the one hand and to nonlinear seismic inversion on the other. The comprehensive and physically complete linear imaging foundation developed presents new results at the leading edge of seismic processing for target location and identification. This book serves as a fundamental guide to seismic imaging principles and algorithms and their foundation in inverse scattering theory, and is a valuable resource for working geoscientists, scientific programmers and theoretical physicists.

Book Synopsis Seismic Exploration of the Deep Continental Crust by : Dirk Gajewski
Download or read book Seismic Exploration of the Deep Continental Crust written by Dirk Gajewski and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEKORP, the German continental reflection seismic program, was the major focus of deep seismic research in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s. The seismic sections provided fundamental new insight into deep geological structure of the European continent and the dynamics of continental formation. They formed the basis for worldwide comparative studies of orogenic structure. The complicated signature of the reflections from the deep crust indicated that new processing and interpretation techniques must be considered to better image the crystalline crust. Results of these efforts, including pre-stack migration, 3-D imaging, shear waves and seismic anisotropy, are presented in this special volume. In part, the articles open the perspective to new and future research. In part, they document research activity triggered by technical and interpretational questions raised by DEKORP field work and profiling results. Many of the presented methods can find immediate application in industrial seismic prospecting.
