Book Synopsis Weeds of Hawaiʻi's Pastures and Natural Areas by : Philip Susumu Motooka
Download or read book Weeds of Hawaiʻi's Pastures and Natural Areas written by Philip Susumu Motooka and published by College of Tropical Agriculture. This book was released on 2003 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive, alien plants are "uninvited guests" in most of Hawai'i's ecosystems. Native forests are invaded, and their precious native plant species are choked out. Extensive areas of pasture land have been colonized by plants that cannot be grazed. Weeds can be a fire hazard, and they can be painful impediments to access to natural areas. This book describes over 150 plants that are considered weeds under certain--if not, in some cases, most--circumstances. The plant types represented include trees, shrubs, vines and sprawlers, herbs, and grasses and their relatives. Most of the weeds covered are illustrated in color, both on the page where the weed is treated and on spreads of "thumbnail" images, grouped by growth habit category for convenience in quick identification. The text accompanying the photograph of each weed provides a detailed description, outlines its distribution and environmental impact in Hawai'i, and relates what is known about methods for managing it. Reprinted May 2021 with new cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasses are among the most ubiquitous plants on the planet. They inhabit a wide geographic range and are found in a variety of natural habitats. The small parts of the grass flower and specialized terminology, however, can make identifying grasses a challenging endeavor. Sarah Chamberlain’s Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic makes identification simpler for everyone—regardless of their previous botanical knowledge. Featuring an easy-to-use dichotomous key, this is a user-friendly guide to more than 300 types of grasses found from the Blue Ridge Mountains and southern plains to the Appalachians and the Allegheny Plateau. Each major entry contains detailed species diagrams as well as common names, habitats, and distribution. The book’s opening sections outline the parts of grass flowers and describe stem, leaf, and sheath characteristics. With a wealth of illustrations, instructions on how to use the key, and a glossary of terms, Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic is an indispensable reference for naturalists and conservationists, botanists, land management professionals, and students and scholars of mid-Atlantic flora.

Book Synopsis The Role Of Centrosema, Desmodium, And Stylosanthes In Improving Tropical Pastures by : Robert L Burt

This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This integrated collection describes the importance of forage legumes for pasture development and improvement in the tropics and subtropics. Leading agronomists review the magnitude of the need for pasture improvement; tropical and subtropical soil and climate environments; reports of the successful use of legumes in pasture development in a wet and a dry tropical environment; and the scope of the problem in terms of area to be developed and development logistics required. Three legume genera, Centrosema, Desmodium, and Stylosanthes, are discussed in detail--information is presented on taxonomy, adaptation, distribution, productivity, and usefulness--and considerable emphasis is placed on Rhizobium germplasm resources for these genera. A concluding section of technical essays addresses special considerations in using tropical legumes in pasture development and presents a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to legume exploration and evaluation.

Book Synopsis Tropical Forage Legumes by : John R Lazier
Download or read book Tropical Forage Legumes written by John R Lazier and published by CABI. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of legume use in agricultural production in the tropics lags far behind the temperate areas and extensive research over recent decades has aimed to rectify the lack of available leguminous fodder species available for heavy clay soils. This book draws together that research and explores the importance of heavy clay soils to agricultural productivity in the tropics and subtropics and the identification of adapted, productive forage legumes for these environments. Providing an invaluable example of how a global search for adapted and productive forage germplasm has been - and can be - undertaken, and allowing access to a significant body of knowledge that was acquired before the digitalization of reports, this book will be a key resource for new scientists and experienced researchers in the areas of agriculture and forage agronomy.
