Book Synopsis Denendeh (Land of the People) by : Elizabeth Trotter
Download or read book Denendeh (Land of the People) written by Elizabeth Trotter and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is a heady mix of human drama, adventure, passion, murder, and love between a man and woman of different cultures. It radiates a warmth that transcends the treachery, pain and anguish abounding in a land geographically, culturally, socially and climatically diverse. The poignant love story is threaded through the fabric of true facts in relation to the land, flora, fauna and descendants of the people who first inhabited it. Eric is catapulted into a land where the ravages of time have left their mark geographically and socially; where visions and dreams are as fleeting as the colourful flowers on the tundra, and the struggle for control of ones destiny flutters and is blown, like a golden fall leaf from the tree, without direction. Erics fascination, with stark beauty and political turmoil of the land, leads him into a cultural liaison with a family whose roots are deeply embedded in a spiritual way of life, but the saplings have rejected the strength of the root. He is ensnared in a love that tears him apart emotionally and physically as it sews the seeds of jealously and mistrust. The result is a drama of murder with devastating consequences. Can Eric emerge as the victor, with the help of the abounding love of a woman whose strength is as stalwart as the land in which she was born.

Book Synopsis Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors by :
Download or read book Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not much more than a decade has passed since the appearance of the outstanding handbook, Catecholamines, edited by BLASCHKO and MUSCHOLL, in the series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. However, this extremely well organized volume dealt mainly with the origin, molecular actions, and fate of the naturally occuring catecholamines. It was felt that a separate volume should be dedicated to the remarkable and exciting progress made in the field of agents influencing the adrenergic system, both in physiologic and pharmacologic respect. The editor of the present volume considers himself lucky to have been able to persuade a number of eminent specialists to collaborate. The main concept of the present handbook is a systematic approach to the various effects of adrenergic activators and inhibitors starting with the chemistry and structure actitivity relationship, followed by the evaluation of adrenergic activators and inhibitors, and discussing their mode of action. The most voluminous part is the chapter dealing with the systemic pharma cology of these agents analyzing the effects on the central nervous system, on the autonomic nervous system, on the cardiovascular, the respiratory, the digestive, the endocrine system, on the skeletal muscle, and on metabolism. Kinetics and bio transformation, further toxic effects are discussed in the following chapters. A special chapter on clinical features concludes the monograph.

Book Synopsis Homocysteine by : Christina Bolander-Gouaille
Download or read book Homocysteine written by Christina Bolander-Gouaille and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 15 years the research on homocysteine and the vitamins involved in its metabolism has become very dynamic. About 1,500 publications on the subject are now published each year. The research has long mainly focused on the association between homocysteine and cardiovascular disease, but also pregnancy complications/ fetal malformations. There is, however, an increasing interest in the connection between the homocysteine metabolism and neuropsychiatric disease with a steeply increasing number of publications. In particular, the association between homocysteine metabolism and cognitive decline/dementia attracts much interest. If simple, non-toxic homocysteine-lowering treatment with vitamins can reduce the incidence of, or delay the onset of dementia, it would have an enormous impact in societies with a rapidly increasing number of elderly at risk for dementia. This book summarises the research within the neuropsychiatric field, but also gives an overview of the underlying biochemistry and of diagnostic aspects. About 1,000 references are given. Christina Bolander-Gouaille, a pharmacist, has for over 10 years specialised in writing reviews/monographs on homocysteine and related vitamins. This is her third book in a series edited by Springer Verlag. This book, however, is written in collaboration with Teodoro Bottiglieri, who is director of neuropharmacology and senior research scientist at Baylor University, Institute for Metabolic Diseases in Dallas, USA.

Book Synopsis Pharmacology of Endogenous Neurotoxins by : Andreas Moser
Download or read book Pharmacology of Endogenous Neurotoxins written by Andreas Moser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a great pleasure to write the foreword to this important volume for several reasons. First: As far as we know, already primitive societies had to cope with environmental toxins of many kinds and set up regulations to limit their effects on food and drug use. Modem science, synthesizing tens of millions of new compounds has incredibly magnified this challenge. Today, xenobiotic metabolism has become a crucial task for humans and many other species alike. Second: When reading this book, one is impressed by the extraordinary speed at which neurotoxicology has advanced. Obviously, processing (and endogenous formation) oftox ins has become an extremely relevant topic. When I had the chance, almost three decades ago, to work in chemical pharmacology with Bernard B. Brodie at NIH, the drug metabo lizing system of the liver had just been recognized and characterized. We had just started to work on the biogenic amines, newly discovered cyclic nucleotides in rat brain, human cere brospinal fluid, and on the effects of toxic drugs like amphetamines. Today, biochemical neuropharmacology is a mature field of neuroscience.
Book Synopsis Ecological by Design by : Kjetil Fallan
Download or read book Ecological by Design written by Kjetil Fallan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How ecological design emerged in Scandinavia during the 1960s and 1970s, building on both Scandinavia’s design culture and its environmental movement. Scandinavia is famous for its design culture, and for its pioneering efforts toward a sustainable future. In Ecological by Design, Kjetil Fallan shows how these two forces came together in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Scandinavian designers began to question the endless cycle in which designed objects are produced, consumed, discarded, and replaced in quick succession. The emergence of ecological design in Scandinavia at the height of the popular environmental movement, Fallan suggests, illuminates a little-known reciprocity between environmentalism and design: not only did design play a role in the rise of modern environmentalism, but ecological thinking influenced the transformation in design culture in Scandinavia and beyond that began as the modernist faith in progress and prosperity waned. Fallan describes the efforts of Scandinavian designers to forge an environmental ethics in a commercial design culture sustained by consumption; shows, by recounting a quest for sustainability through Norwegian wood(s), that one of the main characteristics of ecological design is attention to both the local and the global; and explores the emergence of a respectful and sustainable paradigm for international development. Case studies trace key connections to continental Europe, Britain, the US, Central America, and East Africa. Today, ideas of sustainability permeate design discourse, but the historical emergence of ecological design remains largely undiscussed. With this trailblazing book, Fallan fills that gap.

Book Synopsis Focus on Homocysteine and the Vitamins by : Christina Bolander-Gouaille
Download or read book Focus on Homocysteine and the Vitamins written by Christina Bolander-Gouaille and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 10-12 years, the research on homocysteine has become very active. About 1500 of articles are now published each year on homocysteine and the vitamins involved in its metabolism. A disturbed homocysteine metabolism can be an underlying factor for pregnancy complications and fetal malformations, cardiovascular disease, dementia, psychiatric and neurologic disorders and possibly carcinogenesis. A disturbed homocysteine metabolism can in most cases be normalised by treatment with folate and/or vitamines B12 and B6. Many of these findings therefore directly concern most practitioners. However, if there are good reviews covering single aspects of this research, these are published in specialised journals. The author has realised the difficulties for the practitioner in keeping updated. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and also offers more data on the vitamins. Over 1600 references are made available.
