Et il donne à la perversion une place fondamentale dans l'histoire de chacun : " la disposition aux perversions est la disposition universelle originelle de la pulsion sexuelle humaine à partir de laquelle se développe, au cours de la maturation, le comportement sexuel normal à la suite de modifications organiques et d'inhibitions psychiques ". Car des digues viennent ensuite borner la direction de cette pulsion : la pudeur, le dégoût, la compassion, les constructions sociales de la morale et de l'autorité. La sexualité freudienne n'est donc pas un instinct, elle est détachée des organes génitaux et permet une nouvelle approche des symptômes névrotiques. Elle mène à la conclusion qu' " il n'y a pas de différence fondamentale entre la vie mentale des gens normaux. celle des névrosés et celle des psychotiques ". Les Trois essais sont le lieu d'apports conceptuels majeurs, sur la libido, la pulsion, les pulsions partielles, les zones érogènes, la sublimation, la fixation, la régression, la perversion, etc. Freud y reprend et développe ce qu'il a déjà élaboré et sur quoi il ne cessera de revenir. L'écriture de cet ouvrage l'aura occupé durant près de vingt ans.
