Book excerpt: Hydraulic fluids serve two functions in the hydraulic system; to transfer energy and to lubricate the system. The energy transfer role is relatively well understood while lubrication assessment has been hindered by inability to adequately model hydraulic systems in general by small-scale pump prototypes or by bench testing. In general, most conventional bench tests do not adequately model wear which may accompany hydraulic fluid use in various hydraulic pump designs. Therefore, this has necessitated the use of hydraulic pumps as tribological test stands. The objectives of this paper are to: 1) review common failure modes of different types of hydraulic pumps, 2) provide an overview of the deficiencies of bench testing of hydraulic fluids, 3) review the tribological criterion for successful lubrication of vane, piston and gear pump testing, 4) review the most common pump tests reported to date, and 5) critique the quality of these tests relative to their ability to provide the required data.

Book excerpt: Various test methods have been developed to determine the performance limits of various classes of hydraulic fluids. Lubrication capacity depends on various fundamental fluid parameters including viscosity and anti-wear properties. Critical elements of hydraulic pump and motor lubrication, which is characterized by sliding line-contact wear, will be discussed here. In vane pumps, the pressure loaded tips of the vanes are under Hertz-type load in contact with the surface of the cam ring, and rotate at a high speed creating a sliding line-contact. Due to this sliding line contact, the vane pump is the best-suited instrument for determination of the anti-wear performance of hydraulic fluids within acceptable time and at reasonable expense.

Book excerpt: The current ASTM D-2882 hydraulic vane pump test does not provide the necessary correlation required for the prediction of the lubricating properties of a hydraulic fluid in various piston pump operations. All too often, a fluid will exhibit excellent wear properties in the Vickers V-104 vane pump used in the ASTM D-2882 test, yet produce catastrophic failure at various wear interfaces in a piston pump which may consist of different material pairs, contact loading, configuration or speed. In this paper, a new piston pump test, which is conducted under cycled pressure testing conditions, is proposed. The new test will provide an excellent assessment of the lubricating properties of a hydraulic fluid under a wide variety of wear conditions.

In addition, the life and reliability of the hydraulic components and hence the hydraulic system is becoming more and more dependent upon the characteristics of the circulating fluid in the system. The hydraulic component which normally suffers most when the correct fluid is not used in the system is the hydraulic pump. Three different types of hydraulic pumps are widely used in hydraulic systems. Vane pumps have been the dominant type of pump for hydraulic systems. Gear pumps have replaced vane pumps in many applications. Piston pumps are rapidly gaining popularity. Therefore, the pump manufacturers are conducting tests to qualify fluids for use with their pumps and the fluids formulators are conducting tests to show that their formulations are compatible with hydraulic components. Unfortunately, the tests most widely used are either not industry standards or do not address problems encountered with some hydraulic pumps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several test procedures with the Vickers V 104 C are compared with those of the Vickers VQ-series to show their different technological properties and tribological options for testing. Based on these investigations, the wear results achieved on different test rigs can be interpreted to form a statement on the actual scope of hydraulic pump testing with Vickers vane pumps. Starting from this and including the requirements of industry together with stimulations coming up from new developed fluid analysing devices, the demands for a new pump test method can be derived. Therefore, a comprehensive structure and stress analysis and the documentation of basic wear characteristics in the vane pump V 104 C using a pure mineral oil without additives will be introduced. Thus wear results achieved with this pump and the 35 VQ 25 using identical commercial fluids can be compared. Wear maps derived from wear calculations and verified with wear results obtained with the pure mineral oil can be used to estimate the test performance of the 20 VQ 5 as a substitute for the V 104 C, and will allow a theoretical explanation of the empirically derived upper wear limits used in all vane pump test.

Book excerpt: The current widely accepted "industry standard" pump test employs a Vickers V104C (or V105C) vane pump to assess the antiwear performance of hydraulic fluids. The two main versions of the test are documented as ASTM and IP methods. This pump test method, which was first developed in the 1960s, assesses only the steel-on-steel antiwear performance of hydraulic fluids, and this under constant speed, constant volume, and constant high pressure conditions. Constant conditions are not experienced in practical applications and it can be shown that hydraulic fluids which perform well at high pressure can fail to provide adequate antiwear performance at low pressure. Although other pump types may have different materials in contact, standard universally accepted procedures have not yet emerged to cover these. It can be shown that hydraulic fluids which have good steel-on-steel antiwear performance can have poor performance in steel-on-yellow-metal contacts. There is therefore a need for wear test procedures to be developed which cover the full range of operating conditions and material types found in practical applications. This paper will review experience gained in the author's laboratory, with different hydraulic fluid types, during the development of wear test procedures which more adequately cover the range of operating conditions and material contacts experienced in practical operating environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface analysis of hydraulic gear pumps used in gas turbine failure power generation reveals service life limitations due to gear wear and scuffing. A flexible tribology testing capability (WAM) provides an ability to simulate lubrication and failure mechanisms. A load capacity test protocol developed for gas turbine MIL-PRF-23699 oils is found to invoke the same lubrication and failure mechanisms experienced in hydraulic gear pumps. Scuffing, micro-scuffing and traction (friction) data from load capacity tests show variable lubricating qualities among turbine engine oils used in service. A test protocol that monitors the traction coefficient over a range of load stages reflects both wear and scuffing attributes of oils used in service. The test method shows performance differences among oil types within the same specification and a reduction in wear performance with used oils. The test approach provides an opportunity for more efficient development of gear materials, lubricants and engineered surfaces.
