This book was released on 2004-08-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of catastrophes, it is common to find prior indicators, missed signals, and dismissed alerts that, had they been recognized and appropriately managed before the event, could have resulted in the undesired event being averted. These indicators are typically called "precursors." Accident Precursor Analysis and Management: Reducing Technological Risk Through Diligence documents various industrial and academic approaches to detecting, analyzing, and benefiting from accident precursors and examines public-sector and private-sector roles in the collection and use of precursor information. The book includes the analysis, findings and recommendations of the authoring NAE committee as well as eleven individually authored background papers on the opportunity of precursor analysis and management, risk assessment, risk management, and linking risk assessment and management.

Book excerpt: This book describes the principles and practices of reactor safety as applied to the design, regulation and operation of light water reactors, combining a historical approach with an up-to-date account of the safety, technology and operating experience of both pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactors. The introductory chapters set out the basic facts upon which the safety of light water reactors depend. The central section is devoted to the methods and results of safety analysis. The accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are reviewed and their implications for light water reactor safety are discussed. The concluding chapters examine selected safety issues and their resolution, and highlight results of reactor safety research. The book is amply illustrated, with numerous cross references and a comprehensive index.
Book Synopsis Energy Systems Optimization Considering the Uncertainty of Future Developments by : Wolf Gereon Wedel
Download or read book Energy Systems Optimization Considering the Uncertainty of Future Developments written by Wolf Gereon Wedel and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of anthropogenic climate change and the importance of energy to ensure high living standards, energy system optimization is used to explore different energy system layouts. A recent focus has been on determining cost-effective ways to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This work investigates how future uncertainties regarding technology costs influence optimization results. This is achieved through energy system optimization aimed at reducing system cost using stochastic optimization with probability distributions to capture expected future costs and uncertainties. Theoretical considerations and a minimal example energy system show that Jensen's inequality leads to an overestimation of necessary system costs when scenario optimization considers only the expected technology cost means. Stochastic optimization is applied to a model of the German energy system, including the electricity, heating, and transport sectors. Results from stochastic optimization are compared to scenario results based on mean cost distributions. The use of a factor effect-based meta-model and fewer optimizations in stochastic analysis are investigated to reduce computational effort. The results confirm the overestimation of necessary costs by scenario optimization, showing a 3.5% overestimation with an 80% emission reduction target and 0.4% for a completely renewable system. Stochastic optimization also provides the interquartile range to characterize uncertainty, with a 13.2 Euro MWh-1 interquartile range (27.3% of the mean) for a completely renewable system. Using 30 to 60 optimizations in the stochastic case yields results similar to 500 optimizations, the benchmark. The proposed meta-models offer limited advantages except for predicting extreme results, which are not evident with fewer optimizations. In some cases, especially for non-renewable systems, the expected values from stochastic optimization differ significantly from scenario optimization results. For instance, at a 20% emission limit of 1990 levels, scenario optimization yields 18% of the CO2 emissions compared to the mean of stochastic optimization. Similar differences are seen in other parameters, though most are well-represented by scenario results. Clustering helps manage the diverse results from stochastic optimization by identifying underlying system layouts. Stochastic optimization with probability distributions is robust, with small changes to distributions having minimal impact on outcomes.
Book Synopsis Technology and Strategy by : Richard A. Goodman
Download or read book Technology and Strategy written by Richard A. Goodman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-10-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's complex, dynamic competitive landscape, management of technology can mean the difference between success and failure. Managers and researchers alike need effective ways to conceptualize and develop technology strategies. Richard Goodman and Michael Lawless provide tools needed to integrate firms' technology capabilities with their competitive direction. Technology and Strategy presents models that help put technology and its market impacts into perspective. It addresses the broad questions of how technology and markets evolve, how technology can re-order the "rules" of competition, and how it can shift the balance of individual firms' competitive advantage. It also blends topics currently capturing attention in business circles--such as Total Quality Management and the resource-based view of the firm--into a clear view of technology management programs. Technology and Strategy also describes methods to develop specific strategies to cope with challenges facing executives--like evaluating promising, but untried, new technologies. Using actual case studies from the electronics and bio-tech industries, Goodman and Lawless demonstrate the use of new techniques to formulate strategy, including Technology Mapping and the Innovation Audit. Both were created to help executives choose the approach to technology best suited to their firms' particular capabilities. Offering clear, practical guidance through a complex, fast-changing world of competition, this new analysis of technology and strategy is a valuable guide for general managers, R&D and manufacturing managers, strategic planners, and academics.

Book Synopsis Water Resources and Land-Use Planning: A Systems Approach by : P. Laconte
Download or read book Water Resources and Land-Use Planning: A Systems Approach written by P. Laconte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Water Resources and Land-Use Planning that was held in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, July 3-14, 1978. In the pre paration of the two-week NASI, we identified 12 major goals and objectives, knowing well, at the time, that the satisfaction of all priorities would be an impossible task. It is instructive that we share these early goals and objectives with our readers prior to evaluating the NASI's contribution. 1. Relate and analyze water resources (water quantity and quality, surface and groundwater) and related land resources in a multi objective framework. 2. Identify and relate the scientific, technological, institu tional, societal, legal and political aspects of water and related land resources to policy decisions. 3. Promote and foster the transfer of technological information and assistance in water related land resources within the var ious levels of government. 4. Analyze the above three objectives and goals in light of the experience gained by the institute participants via case studies. 5. Improve communication and understanding among the various dis ciplines involved in water and related land resources. 6. Discuss and analyze the applicability of advanced planning methodologies germane to water and related land resources. 7. Identify current and projected future water and related land resources problems and issues and suggest ways to alleviate their respective and interrelated impacts.
