Book excerpt: In the past decade, the field of trenchless technology has expanded rapidly in products, equipment, and utilization. This expansion would not have occurred without a strong increase ineconomic incentives to the user. Because theoperating environment has changed, trenchless technology is often the preferred alternative to traditional methods of digging holes and installing conduits. The infrastructure in which we live has become more congested and has to beshared by several users. In addition, the cost of restoring a road or landscaped area after construction may be higher than the cost of installing the conduit. These factors add to the need for trenchless technology-the ability to dig holes without disturbing the surface. In some ways, trenchless technology is a futuristic concept. Ruth Krauss in a children'sbookofdefinitions wrote,"AHole...Is to Dig." But thisstatement is not necessarily true. Today, a hole could be to bore. Trenchless technology is not new. But it certainly has become the buzzword of the construction industry and it appears that it will have a growing impact in the way contractors, utilities, and others install new facilities. Methods to bore horizontal holes were practiced as early as the 18005, but this technology has greatly changed. Today's tools include sophisticated drilling methods, state-of the-art power systems, and electronic guidance techniques. These tools can bore faster, safer, and more accurately, and in many instances more economically, than open-cllt methods. Technology has played an important role in these advances, but economics has become the driving force in making these systems popular.

This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Pipe Ramming publication is presented by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), a non-profit educational organization. The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of "NASTT's New Installations Good Practices Training Course" and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Pipe ramming is defined as a trenchless technique used to install open ended steel casings by the hammering action of a percussion hammer. It is an extension of older techniques that use displacement tools to install small-diameter pipes and the application is similar to vertical pile driving. The pipe ramming method provides continuous support of the overburden soil with a steel casing as well as support at the excavation face from the soil that is typically left within the pipe during the ramming process. The method has seen extensive use to install casings for culverts and utilities beneath raised features such as railroad track and roadway embankments. This non-steerable trenchless technology is generally considered to have a low risk of over-excavation related settlement in most ground conditions. All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information. This publication was funded solely by NASTT as part of our educational outreach programing. Since 1990, the all-volunteer members of NASTT have presented non-commercial information about green alternative engineering methods to North American communities and beyond. NASTT offers multiple, high quality trenchless courses each year throughout North America and at our annual NASTT No-Dig Show Conference and Exhibition. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.

The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of "NASTT's New Installations Good Practices Training Course" and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Pipe jacking is defined as a cyclical process of simultaneously excavating the ground, removing the spoils, and advancing pipe segments to support the excavation. Pipe jacking is the mechanism to propel the pipe and machine in both open shield pipe jacking machines and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Advancing of pipe segments is achieved using a jacking frame fitted with high-capacity hydraulic jacks that push the pipe from the launch shaft. The jacking frame applies thrust to the jacking pipe and excavating face (shield or MTBM) simultaneously. The actual setup of a jacking frame can vary considerably, depending on the contractor's equipment and the size of the jacking shaft. All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information.
