Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patchwork in times of plurality encompasses the multitude of actions as a revealing symbol of ethos, actors, organisms, and manifestations of preservation and dialogue frontiers. This plural metaphor, almost like a patchwork, aggregates and yet segregates, conforms, but disfigures, and boosts the meanings which represent this new field that international relations have been recently crossing. Just like the mirror metaphor - that reflects everything to all and, sometimes, intervenes in distortions - the patchwork analogy allowed the book to take responsibility for the disclosure of preservation actions on a global scale. The book has a pioneering role insofar since it is the only publication with such characteristics, concerns, and coverage. The work studies the interconnection between cultural properties and international relations by understanding them as a mosaic before the bridges that intertwine people and borders. The main goal of this work is to illustrate in what way intergovernmental relations have been privileging heritage and culture as acting fields for its broader needs. Therefore, the book addresses topics related to the international agenda, focusing on its less debated themes. Two examples of these undervalued matters are the link between actors, preservationist actions, and the universe of world cultural heritage. The book also pursuits a critical dialogue between interdisciplinary fields that narrow heritage frontiers in search to contribute with a spectrum of academic perspectives and (inter)national study cases. To serve distinct economic, social, or political purposes, institutionalized heritage (embodied by different values) becomes instrumentalized in a top-down direction. In a development frame, when we perceive culture as indispensable to human life, the past is transformed into exchange currency. Through the creation of alternative fields of action, usually in a bottom-up logic, the present builds new heritage connections. Digital heritage's preservation, dissemination, and appreciation have been representing these same nets.

Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of demonstrators standing up for the love of a library, from a New York Times bestselling illustrator In January 2011, in a moment that captured the hearts of people all over the world, thousands of Egypt's students, library workers, and demonstrators surrounded the great Library of Alexandria and joined hands, forming a human chain to protect the building. They chanted "We love you, Egypt!" as they stood together for the freedom the library represented. Illustrated with Susan L. Roth's stunning collages, this amazing true story demonstrates how the love of books and libraries can unite a country, even in the midst of turmoil.

I have also believed that mere dreaming is not enough. One must work hard to realize those dreams by putting in honest efforts in the right direction. I have also had several dreams, some of which were realized but some did remain dreams only. It is reasonable to analyze, at this advanced age, which of the dreams could be turned into realities, and which remained dreams only. I have the pleasure of sharing with my readers my life time experience in this direction.”

Book excerpt: "Songs of the Spirit" is a compilation of poetry that chronicles the personal experiences and spiritual growth of author, Lee Ann Mardel, over a span of twenty-five years. Originally intended as a private journal, her pieces have evolved into a book, addressing the joys, struggles and concerns common in everyday life. From the author's thoughts on family to her words about her relationship with God, the reader will find each piece steeped in passion and meaning. Through a simplistic and straightforward style of writing, the author takes the reader with her on a spiritual journey. In the end these poems remind us that good can be found in the worst situations if you look for it, God uses everything to the betterment of His divine plan, He is working to have a personal relationship with you even when you aren't... He is ever-present and always faithful. Marriage, motherhood, divorce, the deaths of loved ones, work outside the home and the search for fulfillment are just some of the experiences, which Lee Ann Mardel shares with the common woman. All of her positive and less-than-positive situations and relationships have been invaluable teachers in her understanding of life's true treasures. While marking off the years, Lee Ann spent countless hours seeking to fill the void in her life, struggling to find greater meaning and purpose. Without realizing the direction God was moving her, she discovered that the sum total of her life had given her insight into what she maintains was her missing piece. In fact, that missing piece was an understanding of the meaning of life. She found it in the development of a personal relationship with God and in the understanding of His unwavering love. With that awareness she also found a sense of contentment and release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the Bible offers timeless wisdom for any age, but has special guidance for older people. Author Richard Morgan has chosen 120 Scripture readings, in tribute to Moses--recorded as living one hundred and twenty years when he died--and written a series of reflections on Bible characters whose experience of aging speaks across the centuries to us today. Author Jane Marie Thibault asks the question, Would you accept the gift of 120 years with joy and gratitude, or would you respond according to your circumstances? . . . For the first time in the history of humankind many of us may have the opportunity to live that long. We can reasonably expect that we will soon accept the gift of 120 years. Is this good news or bad news for you? Medical science has extended our years and given us longevity, but medical science cannot give us meaning for these years. The meditations in this book offer stories of older Biblical men and women, like Abraham and Sarah, Elizabeth and Zechariah, Simeon and Ann, who offer wisdom on how to find meaning in these later years. Morgan's book would be good reading for older adults and those who have not yet had to face the challenges of the later years. Its wisdom offers the prayer, May you die young at a very old age.

Book excerpt: Reboot to work; retirement is a disease. It 's better to wear out than rust out. That is the message of Reboot! While American culture glamorizes the Golden Years of endless leisure and amusement, Phil Burgess rejects retirement, as he makes the case for returning to work in the post-career years, a time he calls later life. Based on solid research from the social and medical sciences, the author says, It is better to die with your boots on, fully engaged in helping others and repairing the world. Reboot! is partly autobiographical. Indeed, the author is working well into his own post-career years, following two failed retirements. He is also convincing in his eye-opening, historically rooted, and hope-filled arguments for engaging in life-long work that is productive and satisfying. Reboot! identifies five different types of work: in-kind, volunteer, Samaritan, enrichment, and paid work. Booters who incorporate one or more of these types of work into their post-career lifestyle will, according to Burgess, live longer, live better, and die faster avoiding boredom, aimless busy-ness, diminished self-worth and the anguish (and cost) of lingering death. With America 's 78 million boomers turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 a day for the next 18 years, Reboot! provides a timely and provocative alternative to the conventional idea of retirement. With the promises of Social Security and Medicare about to be broken, Reboot! provides an upbeat and constructive way to deal with new financial realities. For men and women navigating life 's transitions, striving to finish well, Reboot! provides a roadmap for living a life of meaning, challenging the reader to be a booter, not a retiree. Burgess boldly asserts that retirement is a deadly disease, and that work after a life of work is the best option for post-career years that are meaningful, productive, healthy, and satisfying. See www.BooterNation.comExcerpts: On retirement: Not all ideas are good ideas. Some are bad ideas. Retirement is one of those bad ideas it makes no sense Retirement is not natural. It is not historic. It is not healthy. It is not, for most people, fulfilling. For many, retirement is a widow maker. On the value of work: The social engagement and satisfaction that come from working in later life are keys to successful aging There is much work to do in this world where we are but temporary inhabitants. We should find it and do it at least for as long as we re able. In many ways, our life depends on it. On work and money: Work is not only about money. Even if you don t need the money and your financial situation is stable and comfortable, returning to work in your post-career life is the smart thing to do at least until sidelined by frailty or disability. It 's smart because good health and satisfaction in later-life are most likely to come from working. On different types of work: For most of us, post-career work will be tailored work, work customized to reflect our needs, our deepest desires, and the highest and best use of our gifts especially time, talent, and treasure. Work tailored to our gifts will be productive and satisfying.

Book excerpt: Today's celebrity conservationists, many of whom made their reputations through television and other visual media, play a major role in drawing public attention to an increasingly threatened world. This book, one of the first to address this contribution, focuses on five key figures: the English naturalist David Attenborough, the French marine adventurer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the American primatologist Dian Fossey, the Canadian scientist-broadcaster-activist David Suzuki, and the Australian 'crocodile hunter' Steve Irwin. Some of the issues the author addresses include: What is the changing relationship between western conservation and celebrity? How has the spread of television helped shape and mediate this relationship? To what extent can celebrity conservation be seen as part of a global system in which conservation, like celebrity, is big business? The book critically examines the heroic status accorded to the five figures mentioned above, taking in the various discourses – around nature, science, nation, gender – through which they and their work have been presented to us. In doing so, it fills in the cultural, historical and ideological background behind contemporary celebrity conservationism as a popular expression of a chronically endangered world.
