Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Western Australia Being a Description of the Various, Cities and Towns, Goldfields, and Agricultural Districts of That State Another beauteous spot near Albany is Little Grove. The day I went the steamer was full, it being a holiday. Launches were plying from jetty to jetty, taking parties of picnickers to the pretty shady groves. A regatta was also being held, and many people were watching it. It was a pretty sight to see the contest of the boats as they sailed merrily round the lovely bay. The weather was exquisite, but a strong breeze was blowing good seamanship was called into play in the sailing of the yachts and robust muscular exertion in the rowing events. Albany may well be called the sanatorium of the colony. The air is so invigorating that, after being there only a few days, one feels almost a new being. Any one suffering from brain fag or exhaustion cannot do better than go to Albany for a holiday. One need only look at the faces of the children, see their healthy looks, bright eyes and general activity, to know that they have been born and brought up amongst healthy surroundings. One feature of the children is their beautiful hair; many possess such luxuriant tresses that one feels inclined to envy the lovely colour and beauty of them, and to wish one also had been born in Albany. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Fourth Tour in Western Australia It is not without considerable misgivings that I venture to place before the Public another Volume upon Western Australia. By the number of the books I have made, I am inclined to believe that Job would have found in me an enemy after his own heart. So often have I given my enemies the opportunity for which the Prophet longed, that my hesitation in the present instance arises not from fear of arousing dormant hostilities, but solely out of consideration for my friends. Hitherto, both the Public and the Press have received each of my efforts with a cordiality that I should be loth to forfeit, and the conviction that the praise bestowed has been beyond the measure of my deserts, has warned me of the possibility of wearing out my welcome. My excuse for once again putting the patience of my readers to the test, must be the fact that, in writing this account of "My Fourth Tour In Western Australia," 1 have treated the subject entirely from a personal standpoint. I have set down only such things as 1 saw and heard during my visit, and in so doing 1 have, to a large e.tent, sacrificed my opportunities of imparting information in order to confine myself to a narrative of personal experiences. In previous books, my object has been to advance the interests of the Colony, and draw attention to her wonderful, but then little known, resources. During my three preceding visits, much of my time was employed in collecting information for this purpose, and the books that resulted from my researches, were of a kind that are to be found in the Reference Department of Public Libraries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oi, mate, is that monstrosity diesel? From the author of the bestsellers Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs, She Thinks I'm a Piano Player in a Whorehouse and This Is Not a Drill, this is the eagerly awaited next instalment of Paul Carter's rollicking life. Take one mad adventurer and a motorbike that runs on bio fuel (cooking oil i.e. chip fat to you and me) and send them with one filmmaker on a road trip around Australia just to see what happens. What you get is a story full of outback characters, implausible (but true) situations, unlikely events and unfortunate breakdowns, all at a breakneck pace. Never one to sit still for long, this is what Paul Carter did next. Whether you've been shocked, delighted, entertained, horrified -- or all of the above -- by Paul's stories whether from oil rigs or the road, one thing is for sure, they are always high octane adventures.
