This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to Conversations with Kentucky Writers, L. Elisabeth Beattie brings together in-depth interviews with sixteen of the state's premiere wordsmiths. This new volume offers the perspectives of poets, journalists, and scholars as they discuss their views on creativity, the teaching of writing, and the importance of Kentucky in their work. They talk frankly about how and why they do what they do. The writers speak for themselves, and their thoughts come alive on the page. Beattie's interviews reveal the allegiances and alliances among Kentucky writers that have shaped literary trends by bringing together people with shared interests, values, subjects, and styles. The interviewees include authors who are captivated in other writers and in what they have to say about the process and craft of writing; educators who are interested in Kentucky writers and what their work reveals about the nature of creativity; and historians who are concerned with Kentucky's literary and cultural heritage. The interviews reveal patterns in Kentucky literature from mid-century to the millennium, as authors talk about how their sense of place has changed over the decades and reveal the ways in which the roots of Kentucky writing have produced a literary flowering at the century's end. Includes: Sallie Bingham, Joy Bale Boone, Thomas D. Clark, John Egerton, Sarah Gorham, Lynwood Montell, Maureen Morehead, John Ed Pearce, Ameilia Blossom Pegram, Karen Robards, Jeffrey Skinner, Frederick Smock, Frank Steele, Martha Bennett Stiles, Richard Taylor, and Michael Williams.

Book excerpt: Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are among the least-known places in South America: nine hundred miles of muddy coastline giving way to a forest so dense that even today there are virtually no roads through it; a string of rickety coastal towns situated between the mouths of the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers, where living is so difficult that as many Guianese live abroad as in their homelands; an interior of watery, green anarchy where border disputes are often based on ancient Elizabethan maps, where flora and fauna are still being discovered, where thousands of rivers remain mostly impassable. And under the lens of John Gimlette—brilliantly offbeat, irreverent, and canny—these three small countries are among the most wildly intriguing places on earth. On an expedition that will last three months, he takes us deep into a remarkable world of swamp and jungle, from the hideouts of runaway slaves to the vegetation-strangled remnants of penal colonies and forts, from “Little Paris” to a settlement built around a satellite launch pad. He recounts the complicated, often surprisingly bloody, history of the region—including the infamous 1978 cult suicide at Jonestown—and introduces us to its inhabitants: from the world’s largest ants to fluorescent purple frogs to head-crushing jaguars; from indigenous tribes who still live by sorcery to descendants of African slaves, Dutch conquerors, Hmong refugees, Irish adventurers, and Scottish outlaws; from high-tech pirates to hapless pioneers for whom this stunning, strangely beautiful world (“a sort of X-rated Garden of Eden”) has become home by choice or by force. In Wild Coast, John Gimlette guides us through a fabulously entertaining, eye-opening—and sometimes jaw-dropping—journey.

This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Village Boy to Global Citizen (Volume 2): The Travels of a Journalist is the last of my autobiographical trilogy. The 74 chapters in this volume attempt to describe and dramatize the most memorable places I visited, often accompanied by my family, since I left the country of my birth in 1966. After my retirement in 2007, I found the time to compile this travelogue using the notes in my diaries and updating the material through online research, with particular help from the constantly revised Wikipedia entries. In this process, I learned to make each travel essay an evergreen that would not perish soon after its publication as in the case of newspaper travel pieces. Travel has shaped my personality. Global travel to get to know culturally diverse people was one of my childhood ambitions. Moreover, travel is an essential aspect of a journalists life. Therefore, my travels constitute a very important part of my autobiography. I included detail in the hope that the reader would keep this volume for long-term reference. My explorations of U.S. national parks and my camping expeditions should be of particular interest to family- oriented travelers. Each of the essays in this volume appeared in the Lankaweb starting December 6, 2009. It carried the latest (but not the last) story (chapter 109) on December 4, 2011. Reacting to the essay (chapter 106) on our mule ride in Mexican territory during the Big Bend adventure, a reader commented, As always it was very well written and visually engaging, which made us feel we were there too. [We] particularly liked the reference to Yankee Doodles [that] made us smile! Thank you for posting it and await the next in the series (May 15, 2011). Another reader reacted to the essay (chapter 92) on our visit to the botanic gardens in Portland, Ore., Please do continue with your articles, Shelton. They are getting better all the time, as you reveal to your readers more of your own thoughts, emotions, and reactions (February 9, 2011). From Village Boy to Global Citizen (Volume 1): The Journey of a Journalist is the second of my autobiographical trilogy. It traces my life as a journalist and a journalism educator in three countries. Village Life in the Forties: Memories of a Lankan Expatriate (published by iUniverse) is the first of the trilogy. This is a collection of 28 sketches of folks in the village of my birth. Each sketch depicts the drama of life relating to the famous and infamous characters who defined the ethos of Pathegama in the 1940s. They range from the amusing and comical to the grave and somber. The trilogy is inextricably interconnected, interdependent and interactive. You are unlikely to grasp what systems theorists call the emergence of the whole if you read only parts of this trilogy.
