Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in the Panjab, Afghanistan,& Turkistan, to Balk, Bokhara, and Herat: And a Visit to Great Britain and Germany IN presenting to the public the following journal of my travels, I feel it incumbent on me to state that my course of instruction in the English language was not of a long duration, and therefore I hope that errors of idiom, and the use of terms not strictly proper, will be overlooked by candid readers. Even in that short period of my tuition, I was not able to attend the college regularly, and pay close atten tion to my studies, owing to the sudden change from highly comfortable and adequate means, my predecessors having been deprived of respectable estates by Government. Book excerpt: Through years of neglect, deliberate modernization, and the effect of decades of war, Kabul’s architectural history has virtually disappeared. By meticulous use of all available records including written works, photographs, films, and oral reminiscences, Kabul: A History 1773-1948 provides a remarkably complete and unsurpassed account of the city’s history as seen through its built environment, from the pleasure gardens of the 16th and 17th century Mughals to the efforts of the Saduza’i and Muhammadza’i rulers of the 18th-20th centuries to turn this one-time resort town into a thriving capital city at the center of a country of enormous diversity. Thoroughly documented and well-illustrated, the book reveals the rich cultural legacy of a city of global importance.
Book Synopsis Connecting Histories in Afghanistan by : Shah Mahmoud Hanifi
Download or read book Connecting Histories in Afghanistan written by Shah Mahmoud Hanifi and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most histories of nineteenth-century Afghanistan argue that the country remained immune to the colonialism emanating from British India because, militarily, Afghan defenders were successful in keeping out British imperial invaders. However, despite these military victories, colonial influences still made their way into Afghanistan. Looking closely at commerce in and between Kabul, Peshawar, and Qandahar, this book reveals how local Afghan nomads and Indian bankers responded to state policies on trade. British colonial political emphasis on Kabul had significant commercial consequences both for the city itself and for the cities it displaced to become the capital of the emerging Afghan state. Focused on routing between three key markets, Connecting Histories in Afghanistan challenges the overtly political tone and Orientalist bias that characterize classic colonialism and much contemporary discussion of Afghanistan.
Book Synopsis Mapping Central Asia by : Sébastien Peyrouse
Download or read book Mapping Central Asia written by Sébastien Peyrouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With renewed American involvement in Afghanistan, Pakistan's growing fragility, and China's rise in power in the post-Soviet space, Central Asia-South Asia relations have become central to understanding the future of the Eurasian continent. Mapping Central Asia identifies the trends, attitudes, and ideas that are key to structuring the Central Asia-South Asia axis in the coming decade. Structured in three parts, the book skillfully guides us through the importance of the historical links between the Indian sub-continent and Central Asia, the regional and global context in which the developing of closer relations between India and Central Asia has presented itself since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the precise domains of Indo-Central Asian cooperation, and studies three conflict zones that frame Indo-Central Asian relations: the Kashmir question; the situation in Afghanistan; and fear of destabilization in Xinjiang. The international line-up of established scholars convincingly demonstrate the fundamental necessity to define the Indian approach on these issues and provide cutting-edge insights on the tools needed to understand the solutions for the decade to come.

Book Synopsis Muslims under Sikh Rule in the Nineteenth Century by : Robina Yasmin
Download or read book Muslims under Sikh Rule in the Nineteenth Century written by Robina Yasmin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the history of Sikh-Muslim relations is fraught with conflict, this book examines how the policies of Sikh rulers attempted to avoid religious bigotry and prejudice at a time when Muslims were treated as third-class citizens. Focusing on the socio-economic, political and religious condition of Muslims under Sikh rule in the Punjab during the 19th century, this book demonstrates that Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his successors took a secular approach towards their subjects. Using various archival sources, including the Fakir Khana Family archives and the Punjab Archives, the author argues citizens had freedom to practice their religion, with equal access to employment, education and justice.
Book Synopsis State and Tribe in Nineteenth-Century Afghanistan by : Christine Noelle
Download or read book State and Tribe in Nineteenth-Century Afghanistan written by Christine Noelle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the exception of two short periods of direct British intervention during the Anglo-Afghan Wars of 1839-42 and 1878-80, the history of nineteenth-century Afghanistan has received little attention from western scholars. This study seeks to shift the focus of debate from the geostrategic concern with Afghanistan as the bone of contention between imperial Russian and British interests to a thorough investigation of the sociopolitical circumstances prevailing within the country. On the basis of unpublished British documents and works by Afghan historians, it lays the groundwork for a better understanding of the political mechanisms at work during the early Muhammadzai era by analysing them both from the viewpoint of the center and the pierphery.
