Book excerpt: A history of the Jews in the Romanian part of Banat and in the adjacent city of Arad. Pp. 23-36 deal with the "Judenordnung" concerning the Jews of Banat issued in 1776 by the Austrian Empire's governor in Banat; the ordinance contained some oppressive anti-Jewish provisions. Pp. 131-159 describe anti-Jewish policies under the regime of King Carol II (1930-40) and during the Antonescu dictatorship (1940-44). The anti-Jewish laws of the Antonescu period were a continuation of the old nationalist policies of the 1920s-30s. Reports on the impact of the anti-Jewish laws of 1938-40 on Banat and Arad. Describes the activities of Baron Franz von Neumann of Arad, an industrialist who tried to withstand the Romanization policy in his factories and is credited for bribing Romanian authorities in 1942 to thwart an impending deportation of Jews. The oppressive policies of the postwar communist rulers of Romania were mainly the same for Jews and non-Jews.

Book excerpt: These volumes of a three-volume history of Transylvania are designed to present Transylvanian history in a European context and with due attention to Transylvania's links to Hungary, the Habsburg Empire, the Romanian Principalities, Turkey and other states of Europe. The comparative approach is also prominent in the presentation of Transylvania's internal affairs in that the authors address the history--demographic, economic, social, political and cultural--of the three major national groups: Romanian, Hungarian, and Saxon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Transylvania in the Second Half of the Thirteenth Century Tudor Salagean describes the deep transformations of a country that was the scene of a fierce resistance against the great Mongol invasion of 1241-1242. In the second half of the thirteenth century, with the rise of the provincial nobility, Transylvania redefines its internal political system, which reached its maturity during the rule of Ladislas Kan (1294-1315). The appearance of a complex congregational system, also achieved in this period, is connected with the assertion of Regnum Transilvanum, which represents a historical link between the early medieval regnum Erdewel of duke Gyula and the regnum transsilvaniensis of the Union of 1459, announcing the rise of the early modern Principality of Transylvania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of a uniquely fascinating region, whose seat is soon to be the European Capital of Culture, as told by a team of renowned academics. "Neumann's book has many qualities - it is beautifully presented, very wide ranging and nicely illustrated - but above all it is a reminder of what the radical right wants to destroy, and how it wants to turn a vibrant, thriving scene into a world of sameness and conformity." - Dan Stone, Professor of Modern History at Royal Holloway, University of London ‘For all those who (we hope) will visit Timișoara during its year as European Capital of Culture, Victor Neumann’s volume provides a welcome introduction to the city and region, of the highest scientific and intellectual quality.’ - Observator Cultural"...an innovative, monographic illustration of the research topic through cooperation between specialists. Even those who know the history of Banat will find new perspectives." - Armin HeinenThe Banat is a uniquely fascinating example of a European cross-border region, incorporating parts of western Romania, northeastern Serbia and a small area of southeastern Hungary. The team of historians, headed by Professor Victor Neumann of the West University in Timisoara, who have contributed to this volume are drawn from across the three modern nations of the region. They analyse the history and culture of the Banat from the earliest times, focusing on the 300 years since it was captured from the Ottoman Turks by Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today this ethnically diverse region has a distinct character of its own, and its Romanian seat, the city of Timisoara, exudes a character quite different from Transylvania and the rest of Romania. This new English edition of the book (originally published in Romanian in 2016 under the title Istoria Banatului) has been expanded and is published to support Timisoara's designation as European Capital of Culture in 2023.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the trajectory of one section of Patrick Leigh Fermor's famous pedestrian excursion from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. This S.O.E. officer walked into Hungary as a youth of 19 at Easter of 1934 and left Transylvania in August. "A cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene" as the New York Times obituary put it in 2011, this intrepid traveller published his experiences half a century later. Between the Woods and the Water covers the part of the epic journey on foot from the middle Danube to the Iron Gates. It has been a bestseller since it was first published in 1986. O'Sullivan reveals the identity of the interesting characters in the travelogue, interviewing several of their descendants and meticulously recreating Leigh Fermor's time spent among the Hungarian nobility. Leigh Fermor's recollections of his 1934 contacts are at once a proof of a lifelong attraction for the aristocracy, and a confirmation of his passionate love of history and understanding of the region. Rich with photos and other rare documents on places and persons both from the 1930s and today, the book offers a compelling social and political history of the period and the area. Described by Professor Norman Stone as "a major work of Hungarian social archaeology," this book provides a portrait of Hungary and Transylvania on the brink of momentous change.
