Book excerpt: L'étude du transfert des polluants en Seine et du rôle de la phase solide (matières en suspension et sédiments) dans ce processus a été conduite sur le parcours le plus anthropisé de la rivière, en insistant sur le rôle décisif des techniques d'échantillonnage pour l'obtention de prélèvements représentatifs. Ces techniques doivent tenir compte des rythmes journaliers (observés en particulier à l'aval de la station d'Achères) et des délais d'homogénéisation des flux après une confluence ou un rejet. Si la pollution ammoniacale la plus évidente à l'aval d'Achères transite essentiellement en phase dissoute et ne diminue que très en aval par nitrification, les pollutions carbonée, azotée organique et phosphorée sont liées majoritairement à la phase particulaire. Les matières en suspension sont également le véhicule privilégié des métaux et des hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques. En régime de basses eaux, quelques kilomètres après un effluent polluant, on ne retrouve plus l'impact de celui-ci sur la qualité de la matière particulaire du fait de la rapide sédimentation de cette dernière, alors que la phase dissoute reste marquée sur des dizaines de kilomètres en aval. Mais le cycle sédimentation (en basses eaux) et remise en suspension (épisodes de crues) ainsi que les phénomènes d'échange à l'interface eau-sédiment entretiennent une source de pollution latente liée à la phase solide sédimentée. Indépendamment des variations du régime hydraulique de la rivière pour le transport de la pollution, des phénomènes saisonniers biologiques et biochimiques interviennent dans les processus de transfert. Les épisodes de blooms algaux, au printemps, modifient la composition de la charge particulaire favorisant l'élimination des métaux de la colonne d'eau, en particulier par élévation du ph. D'autre part en été, lorsque l'activité biologique est maximale, les relargages vers la colonne d'eau deviennent importants, tant pour l'azote ammoniacal que pour des métaux tels que Pb, Fe et Mn, ce qui conduit à un certain nettoyage du sédiment

The Seine basin is inhabited by circa 17 million people and is impacted by intensive agricultural practices and industrial activities. These pressures have gradually affected its hydrological, chemical and ecological functioning, leading to a maximum chemical degradation between the 1960s and the 1990s. Over the last three decades, while major water-quality improvements have been observed, new issues (e.g. endocrine disruptors, microplastics) have also emerged. The state of the Seine River network, from the headwaters to estuary, is increasingly controlled by the balance between pressures and social responses. This socio-ecosystem provides a unique example of the functioning of a territory under heavy anthropogenic pressure during the Anthropocene era. The achievements made were possible due to the long-term PIREN Seine research program, established in 1989 and today part of the French socio-ecological research network “Zones Ateliers”, itself part of the international Long-term Socio-economic and Ecological Research Network (LTSER). Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introduction to the water budget and the territorial metabolism of the Seine basin, and studies the trajectories and impact of various pollutants in the Seine River. It offers insights into the ecological functioning, the integration of agricultural practices, the analysis of aquatic organic matter, and the evolution of fish assemblages in the Seine basin, and also presents research perspectives and approaches to improve the water quality of the Seine River. The nation, she argues, is socially and culturally constructed as a white possession. Moreton-Robinson reveals how the core values of Australian national identity continue to have their roots in Britishness and colonization, built on the disavowal of Indigenous sovereignty. Whiteness studies literature is central to Moreton-Robinson’s reasoning, and she shows how blackness works as a white epistemological tool that bolsters the social production of whiteness—displacing Indigenous sovereignties and rendering them invisible in a civil rights discourse, thereby sidestepping thorny issues of settler colonialism.
