Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transplantation of Teeth Into Artificial Sockets Transplantation of teeth from one mouth to another is not, by any means, a new operation, as it was done many years ago for the noble and the opulent of the old world. It is not only mentioned in some of the very old works on surgery, but even by writers of fiction. Not only did the poor mar their mouths to sell their teeth, but even the freshly dead were disfigured for this purpose. Victor Hugo, himself, utilizes a knowledge of this operation in "Les Miserables," and makes one of his heroines, Fanchon, sell two of her front teeth in order to procure food for her starving child. But so many disastrous consequences occurred, so many painful effects followed, and so many failures happened, that the operation fell into disrepute and was abandoned as soon as artificial substitutes were invented that approached, in some measure, a natural appearance and in some degree served the purpose of mastication. Not until I was in Paris in 1877, however, did I learn how the operation of transplantation was effected, and in learning that, I acquired an insight into the causes of the many disastrous, painful and futile results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teeth: Natural and Artificial The mouth - the organ of speech and mas tication - is not only the most expressive and characteristic, but also the most im portant, of all the features. It is connected by means of its lining mucous membrane witlbthe pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and intestinal canal, and with the lary nx, trachea, and bronchi being thus vitally related to the economy of respiration and digestion. This close relationship and sym pathy of the parts are manifested in disease by perceptible changes in the tongue, gums, lips, and mucous membranes while through the nerves, with which the mouth is so abundantly supplied, sympathetic relations are established with the eyes, ears, and, in fact, with every part of the body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extraction of Teeth IN this small work I have endeavoured to treat a subject of interest both to the general and dental practitioner. Although it is a worthy aim to treat teeth where possible by conservative measures, these measures may be persisted in to the detriment of the patients' health, and a distinct line must be recognized between the possibility of restoring to function a tooth or root and the advisability of so doing. Teeth are more easily made comfortable to the patient than to his tissues, and a difficult point often arises in how far the latter and more stringent test is to be considered. Disease in distant parts of the body has not infrequently been traced to teeth filled or crowned, and relieved by their removal. It is with the above points in view that I venture to bring this subject forward. I have to express my obligation to Mr. Tomes and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Classification of Human Tooth Forms With Special Reference to a New System of Artificial Teeth However, I am greatly encouraged in my belief that the bad Old customs of practice in dental prosthesis are about to receive a rude shock by my knowledge of the fact that in no country in the world are inferior methods, systems and machines so quickly dis carded or scrapped the moment their inferiority to something new is demonstrated and established, as here in America. American busi ness men found out long ago that it is the truest economy and the surest way to success to throw away an inferior method of produc tion, or a method which produces an inferior article, the instant better methods are discovered. That policy has made Americans the great est leaders in the business world. It has sent all the nations of the earth here to learn and copy American methods, and to -day you may find those methods being put into effect in the remotest corners of the world. So strong and vital 1s this influence of American progress that Guglielmo Ferrero, the distinguished Italian historian, says i is the one idea that has taken deep hold of the European masses during the last fifty years. It has certainly created a new outlook and a new spirit in the world. It has made men more self-reliant and given them a greater confidence in their own inherent capacity to subdue the stubborn and apparently antagonistic forces of Nature to human will. It is in that American spirit which says, in the language of the people, The best we can have is none too good, that I have come here to - day to ask you to discard, to throw away, to utter ly destroy and obliterate a system of prosthetic dentistry that has ex isted far too long, and to establish in its place something more in keeping with the reputation for progress and scientific achievement and character that our country enjoys in other fields throughout the world. Dr. Ebersole, in a stirring and eloquent call, published in the Dental Summary last January, warned you that dentistry was not keeping in the van of American progress. If that is true in any degree of dental practice as a whole, then it is most emphatically true of dental prosthesis. And on that point I believe there are no two Opinions.
