Book excerpt: The kinetics which drive cascade formation and subsequent collapse into point-defect clusters is investigated by analyzing the microstructure produced in situ by low fluence 100 keV Kr ion irradiations of fcc-Cu over a wide temperature range (18-873 K). The yield of collapsed point-defect clusters is demonstrated unequivocally to be temperature dependent, remaining approximately constant up to lattice temperatures of 573 K and then abruptly decreasing with increasing temperature. This drop in yield is not caused by defect loss during or following ion irradiation. This temperature dependence can be explained by a thermal spike effect. These in-situ yield measurements are compared to previous ex-situ yield measurements in fcc-Ni and bcc-Mo.

Book excerpt: Despite the significant progress in the study of point defects in metals, some important problems still do not have unambiguous solutions. One of the most practically important questions relates to equilibrium defect concentrations. There exist two opposite viewpoints: (1) defect contributions to physical properties of metals at high temperatures are small and cannot be separated from the effects of anharmonicity; the equilibrium defect concentrations at the melting points are in the range of 10-4 to 10-3; (2) in many cases, defect contributions to the specific heat of metals are much larger than nonlinear effects of anharmonicity and can be separated without crucial errors; the equilibrium concentrations at the melting points are of the order of 10-3 in low-melting-point metals and 10-2 in high-melting-point metals. This book discusses the experimental results and theoretical considerations favoring each claim. At present, the majority of the scientific community hold the first viewpoint. Regrettably, the data supporting the second viewpoint have never been displayed and discussed together, and the criticism of this viewpoint has never included a detailed analysis. Important arguments supporting this viewpoint have appeared in the last decade. It may turn out that just calorimetric determinations provide the most reliable values of equilibrium defect concentrations in metals. In this book, the main attention is paid to equilibrium point defects in metals and their relation to thermophysical properties of metals. Along with a discussion on experimental data and theoretical estimates now available, some approaches are proposed that seem to be most suitable for settling the question.

Book excerpt: Neutrons and high-energy ions incident upon a solid can initiate a displacement collision cascade of lattice atoms resulting in localized regions within the solid containing a high concentration of interstitial and vacancy point defects. These point defects can collapse into various types of dislocation loops and stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT) large enough that their lattice strain fields are visible under diffraction-contrast imaging using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The basic mechanisms driving the collapse of point defects produced in collision cascades is investigated in situ with TEM for fcc-Cu irradiated with heavy (100 keV Kr) ions at elevated temperature. The isothermal stability of these clusters is also examined in situ. Areal defect yields were observed to decrease abruptly for temperatures greater than 300 C. This decrease in defect yield is attributed to a proportional decrease in the probability of collapse of point defects into clusters. The evolution of the defect density under isothermal conditions appears to be influenced by three different rate processes active in the decline of the total defect density. These rate constants can be attributed to differences in the stability of various types of defect clusters and to different loss mechanisms. Based upon observed stabilities, estimations for the average binding enthalpies of vacancies to SFT are calculated for copper.

Book excerpt: Three-dimensional characterization of defects is an essential step in the engineering of point defects to control the type, concentration, and spatial distribution of defects with nanometer-scale resolution to design materials with new functions and properties. High-resolution electron microscopy is becoming a general-purpose tool for characterizing several point defects with single-defect sensitivity and sub-unit cell spatial resolution in all three dimensions. Detectable defects include substitutional impurities, interstitial impurities, self-interstitials, and impurity-containing defect complexes. However, all the defects so far imaged at the single-defect level often increase the local electron scattering by 50% or more, and 3D imaging of defects that change column intensity less than 10%, such as single vacancies was only reported very recently. In the first part of this thesis, we demonstrated an approach for three-dimensional imaging of single vacancies using high precision quantitative high-angle annular dark-field Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy. Vacancies are identified by both the reduction in scattered intensity created by the missing atom and the distortion of the surrounding atom positions. Vacancy positions are determined laterally to a unique lattice site in the image and in depth to within one of two lattice sites by dynamical diffraction effects. 35 single La vacancies are identified in images of a LaMnO3 thin film sample. The vacancies are randomly distributed in depth and correspond to a La vacancy concentration of 0.79%, which is consistent with the level of control of cation stoichiometry within our synthesis process (~1%) and with the equilibrium concentration of La vacancies under the film growth conditions. This method can be extended to detect other defects including impurities and defect clusters and these results represent a step forward in characterizing point defects in materials one at a time, at atomic resolution, matching our current capabilities in materials simulation and our growing control over defect distributions in synthesis. In the second parts of this thesis, I adapted the cut-edge Poisson denoising and machine learning algorithm into the four-dimensional STEM, which could potentially detect point defects that are undetectable by traditional STEM. We demonstrate that the iterative BM4D Poisson denoising algorithm could recover most of the image features corrupted by Poisson noise and increase the PSNR most. We also demonstrate that the convolutional neural network (VGG-16), trained on simulated PACBED data set, could accurately predict TEM sample thickness with> 99% accuracy within 100 nm with 2 nm thickness step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent molecular dynamics and transmission electron microscopy results on irradiated metallic materials are reviewed, with an emphasis on defect production in the displacement cascade and the fluence- and temperature-dependent accumulation of defect clusters. Materials analyzed include Fe, V, Cu, austenitic stainless steel, V4%Cr4%Ti, and ferritic/martensitic steel. Intrinsic differences between the defect accumulation behavior of body centered cubic (BCC) and face centered cubic (FCC) metals are highlighted. Results on the temperature-dependent vacancy cluster density of Cu are discussed in terms of vacancy binding energies for SFTs. Finally, recent results on deformation behavior of irradiated, quenched, and deformed metals are discussed, with particular emphasis on flow localization mechanisms (e.g., dislocation channeling), and experimental and molecular dynamics studies of the detailed dislocation-defect cluster interactions.
