Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translation and Exposition of the First Epistle of the Apostle Peter From the Rev. Dr. Cannon, Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government in the Theological Seminary at New Brunsivick, N. J. I have read and examined, so far as my engagements and leisure would permit, the translation and exposition, by the Rev. John T. Demarest, of Peters First Epistle; and consider the work to be, as a brief commentary on a precious portion of the New Testament Scriptures, replete with matter which will edify those persons who are solicitous "to know the truth as it is in Jesus," and to be built up in Christian faith and practice. Such a commentary ought to be in the possession of every family. Those who read it will profit by it. It exhibits divine truth, expressed by an inspired Apostle, in a clear light, and cannot fail to please, instruct, and confirm those who drink into the spirit of that Apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ: to whom be glory for ever. From the Rev. Dr. van Vranken Professor of Didactic and Polemic Theology in the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick. As far as I am enabled to form a judgment of Mr. Demarest's Commentary, from the reading of some of its parts, and those on the more difficult passages of the Epistle; I feel fully warranted in expressing my entire concurrence with the judgment given by my venerable colleague, Dr. Cannon. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Discourses on the First Epistle of the Apostle Peter The translation of the Epistle, though prefixed to the Expository Discourses, was written after them, and indeed contains a condensed statement of the result of the Author's investigations. This accounts for the fact that, in an instance or two, the sense given in the translation slightly differs from that commented on in the Exposition. To prevent disappointment it is right to state that the object of the Author has been to produce not so much an original work, as a satisfactory exposition. In his estimate of the duties of an interpreter of Scripture, next to the careful study of the original text, ranks the attentive reading of what has been pub lished for the illustration of it. Under this conviction he has studied the Epis tle, not only without note or comment, but with all the notes and comments with in his reach; and the book he now respectfully lays before the church contains the substance of all that in his thoughts and reading seemed best fitted to illus trate the meaning and promote the objects Of the inspired writer. Of the helps of which he has availed himself, a list is furnished at the close of these prefatory remarks. He has distinguished by an asterisk those to which he has been chiefly indebted. Elliott, a leading authority on this letter, brings its significance to life in this magnificent addition to the renowned Anchor Bible Commentaries. Elliott sets the letter into context, covering its literary, historical, theological, and linguistic elements. In detailed, accessible discussions, he draws on the latest research to illuminate the social and cultural influences on the Church in its initial years. Book Synopsis Good Works in 1 Peter by : Travis B. Williams
Download or read book Good Works in 1 Peter written by Travis B. Williams and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recent insights from postcolonial theory and social psychology, Travis B. Williams seeks to diagnose the social strategy of good works in 1 Peter by examining how the persistent admonition to "do good" is intended to be an appropriate response to social conflict. Challenging the modern consensus, which interprets the epistle's good works language as an attempt to accommodate Greco-Roman society and thereby to lessen social hostility, the author demonstrates that the exhortation to "do good" envisages a pattern of conduct which stands opposed to popular values. The Petrine author appropriates terminology that was commonly associated with wealth and social privilege and reinscribes it with a new meaning in order to provide his marginalized readers with an alternative vision of reality, one in which the honor and approval so valued in society is finally available to them. The good works theme thus articulates a competing discourse which challenges dominant social structures and the hegemonic ideology which underlies them.
