Book excerpt: Student veterans have a set of experiences that require special support to successfully transition from the military into higher education. The purpose of this collective case study is to explore the perceptions of undergraduate student veterans about their transition needs to determine social and psychological supports needed to transition into a four-year, public university in western Pennsylvania. The participants were undergraduate students enrolled at a four-year, public university in western Pennsylvania who have either served on Active Duty in the U.S. military or have been deployed in support of the Global War on Terror. This study sought to answer the following Central Question: What are the perceived social and psychological support needs of undergraduate student veterans transitioning from the military to higher education? The research methods utilized include individual semi-structured and focus group interviews. This study is framed by the existing literature on military culture and veteran transitions, previous veteran experiences in higher education, and the mitigation of social and psychological challenges through social support. Ten undergraduate student veterans participated in this study through either individual or focus group interviews. This study explored their perceptions of the transition from the military into higher education, their social and psychological support needs during this transition, and their mentoring and social support experiences in the military and higher education. Three results emerged from the findings: (1) the need for support navigating the bureaucracy of higher education; (2) the need for help socializing with fellow students; and (3) the need for support navigating personal stress, anxiety and depression. The study concluded and recommended implementing a student veteran and non-traditional new student orientation and implementing a veteran peer mentoring program. The recommendation for an orientation addresses the perceptions of lack of communication and knowledge of resources available to the students. The recommendation for a veteran peer mentoring program addresses the needs for support navigating the bureaucracy, help socializing, and support navigating mental health challenges. Recommendations for future research include expanding the research to additional institutions in Pennsylvania, exploring the relationships of student veterans to non-traditional students and faculty, and exploring non-clinical methods to address mental health challenges.

Not all returning Post 9/11 veterans are seeking a two or four year college degree in higher education. What those veterans need is a way to transition their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) skills into jobs that are in demand within the current business environment. That transition of skills can range from basic business courses to refresher courses in math and soft computer skills. Returning veterans trying to acquire these critical skill enhancements find that these types of courses do not meet the requirements set forth by the current GI bill. The current Post 9/11 GI Bill will only pay for educational courses that leads to a two or four year degree or courses that fulfill a job license requirement. This study provides a framework for addressing this problem and makes recommendations for changes in procedures and curriculum that can be supported by the current Post 9/11 GI Bill. The results of this case study suggests that developing a condensed curriculum provides Post 9/11 veterans with the skills needed to secure gainful employment in a minimal timeframe. The condensed curriculum follows the course requirements for an undergraduate degree and thus qualifies for the Post 9/11 GI Bill Educational Benefits. The Post 9/11 GI Bill Educational Benefits provides the veteran with tuition assistance, books, housing and living allowance during their skills enhancement training. This case study also suggests that the development of a veteran's cohort greatly reduces transition anxieties as well as the anxieties associated with PTSD and other closely associated mental disorders. The findings of this case study points to the fact that universities and colleges need to change their curriculum to address the Post 9/11 veteran's educational needs.

In an effort to develop a pilot course intended to help student veterans transition from the military to college, this qualitative study sought to evaluate existing university veteran transition programs and courses and determine factors that appear to be working at top military friendly institutions. To help examine the continuing need for and elements of a successful transition course for veterans, interviews were conducted with experts in the area of student veterans' transition, and a document review conducted to ascertain the type of veterans' success programs/courses currently available. This study found 1) that institutions of higher education can improve the success and retention of student veterans by offering courses that assist them in their transition to the academic environment and careers as civilians and 2) that there are gaps in existing programs and courses that can be filled by modifying, expanding, and combining currently existing courses. In an attempt to do so, the researcher designed a pilot course to help first year student veterans' transition into higher education and later the workplace. Specifically, the pilot course is designed with the primary focus of transitioning from military to college, making meaning of the transition and adding elements of civilian career exploration. The pilot course allows veterans to apply their military experiences to their future efforts as college students and civilians. This study adds to the research that has been conducted in the past decade into the lives and success (or lack thereof) of student veterans, and reiterates the need for higher education to create spaces for learning where student veterans are welcomed and supported. Because of their unique needs, which the pilot course seeks to meet, purposeful attempts by institutions of higher to improve the learning environment of student veterans will undoubtedly lead to an improved learning environment for all students.

Book excerpt: Although much research has been conducted on military veterans who enroll in institutions of higher education following their returns from deployment, much of that work has focused on issues such as veterans' finances or academic achievement, rather than the individuals' transitions from deployment to student life. Prior to the 2008 passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, only 22% of institutions offered transition assistance to veteran-students; four years later, that figure has dramatically increased to 37%. Due to the rapidly growing interest in transition assistance among student-veteran services practitioners, it is clear that more research is needed on these transitions. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach for this study, I interviewed six returning veteran-students at a large, research university in the Midwest. I then analyzed the subjects' responses within the framework provided by Schlossberg's Transition Theory. I found that the influences that most strongly impacted the participants' transitions were assets and deficits that were financial, physical, emotional, psychological, and, most significantly, social in nature.

Retention theory, and transition theory were used as the guiding theories for this study. An intrinsic qualitative case study was used for data analysis, which resulted in the emerging themes (a) Transitioning from Military Service to Civilian Life, (b) Work-Life-Study Balance: Confronting Challenges, and (c) Supporting Military Veterans. This study contributed to current research by exploring the systems of support needed for military veterans to successfully transition from the military to their civilian lives and successfully complete their higher education degrees. This study also provides insight into the obstacles faced by transitioning veterans such as reintegration with health concerns, changes and adjustments to the veteran’s geographic location, daily work routine changes, locating supportive resources, and reliance in family and social systems of support. This study contributed to current research by identifying campus and community resources that were used, or that were missing and needed during participants’ undergraduate studies. Among recommendations for future support was a mixed-methods study to review qualitative and quantitative data on the increased retention of military, a phenomenological study to focus on the common experiences of transitioning military veterans centered on participants’ gender, race, or socioeconomic status. To begin re-exploring the lived experiences of enlisted veterans who have transitioned back into the civilian world as full-time college students, I utilized blogs to collect narrative data about veterans who transitioned from the military into the full-time college setting. Blogs allow participants to both write about and share their stories with a community of peers. The data was analyzed using a constructivist-interpretist paradigm that gave "voice to participants' experiences by means of extensive quotation" (Fassinger, 2005, p. 157). Some of the general themes included a sense of feeling out of place and isolated; seeking out fellow veterans, especially in school veteran organizations, provided many with a feeling of normalcy and belonging; the experience of being disciplined in the military was often noted as an asset when in regards to school work; most were dissatisfied with the transition assistance programs the military offered; and most reported difficulties re-learning how to communicate and behave in civilian culture, among others. Findings from this study can help to further clarify the obstacles that college veterans experience as they readjust to life as civilians and college students.
