Book excerpt: Although the quarterlife crisis is an increasingly recognized social phenomenon, much about this dynamic period in the life course and its impact on individuals remains unknown. How does the quarterlife transition inform individual expectations about future geographic mobility, and are these expectations salient across cultural boundaries? To explore questions such as these, I compare the expected future residential mobility of graduating college students in two different regions: Flanders, Belgium, which is characterized by the retention of young adults, and Upstate New York, which is characterized by immense out-migration of young adults. Interviews with young people in both regions provide a foundation of qualitative data, which is analyzed using a thematic framework rooted in sociological life course theory. Life-Span Development, Agency, Time and Place, Timing, and Linked Lives represent the five paradigmatic principles used to interpret the expectations of young adults in two different cultural contexts. The results reveal many similarities as well as some truly telling differences in the way individuals in different regions experience the quarterlife transition.

Marriage is dependent on the structure of marriage markets, and marriage patterns have consequences for social inequality. This book demonstrates that in most modern societies the educa tional system has become an increasingly important marriage market, particularly for those who are highly qualified. Educational expansion in general and the rising educational participation of women in particular unintentionally have increased the rate of "assortative meeting" and assortative mating across birth cohorts. Rising educational homogamy means that social inequality is further enhanced through marriage because better (and worse) educated single men and women pool their economic and sociocultural advantages (and disadvantages) within couples. In this book we study the changing role of the educational system as a marriage market in modern societies from a cross-national comparative perspective. Using life-history data from a broad range of industrialized countries and longitudinal statistical models, we analyze the process of spouse selection in the life courses of single men and women, step by step. The countries included in this book vary widely in important characteristics such as demographic behavior and institutional characteristics. The life course approach explicitly recognizes the dynamic nature of partner decisions, the importance of educational roles and institutional circum stances as young men and women move through their life paths, and the cumulation of advantages and disadvantages experienced by individuals.

Being among the most vulnerable, many young refugees experience violence, exploitation and trauma, as well as continued risk of violation of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. When they reach the age of 18, they are no longer under the protection of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This means that, from this point, young refugees may no longer have the protection and access to rights and opportunities previously held as children, and they can face an abrupt and dramatic change in the possibility of accessing services and support across many sectors. The rights of young refugees in transition to adulthood has been a priority of the Council of Europe over many years. In 2019, the Committee of Ministers adopted Recommendation CM/Rec(2019)4 on Supporting Young Refugees in Transition to Adulthood, recommending that member states’ governments ensure that additional temporary support is available to young refugees after the age of 18 to enable them to access their rights. The Recommendation also acknowledges the important role played by youth work and non-formal education / learning in supporting the inclusion of young refugees, and in developing competences for active citizenship and democratic participation. The Council of Europe prepared this Guide to further promote and support the implementation of the Recommendation. The Guide should inspire young refugees, youth workers, policymakers, researchers and other relevant actors to familiarise themselves with, apply and support the implementation of the Recommendation in their own contexts and communities. The Guide simplififies the language of the Recommendation in order to assist various actors and stakeholders in developing a better and clearer understanding of the proposals and policy measures. A range of promising practices are likewise incorporated to exemplify how the Recommendation is being put into practice.

Some individuals, such as Joseph Conrad or Vladimir Nabokov, have overcome that handicap brilliantly. Others learn to live with it: they can express themselves sufficiently lucidly in a second language to make their voice heard internation ally. At least when they have something original or striking to say they will be certain to reach their peers. Most scientists and scholars fall into that category. Others, again, have to wait until their work has been translated before its value is recognised. This may apply even to those whose mother tongue is widely read. The writings of Frenchmen Lyotard, Derrida, Baudrillard or Foucault on post-modernism, on language, discourse and power, for example, had tremendous world-wide impact only after English translations appeared on the market. De Gans' study of the development of population forecasting in The Nether lands is another striking illustration of the effects a language barrier may have. He demonstrates convincingly that although a -possibly some what awkward Dutchman named Wiebols, was a pioneer of modern cohort component demo graphic forecasting, he never received international recognition for this. In his thesis of 1925 Wiebols employed the newest instruments of demographic analysis in improving forecasting methodology.
