Book Synopsis Transforming Student Travel by : Faye Brenner
Download or read book Transforming Student Travel written by Faye Brenner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming Student Travel calls for a paradigm shift in the student tour industry: educators collaborating to create a student-centered, inquiry-based tour. Marcel Proust said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” This resource guide explores ways educators can encourage students not only to see with “new eyes,” but also to understand how they know. The International Baccalaureate informs the first part of the book which includes educational research as well as practical suggestions for improving the tour experience, including an integration of academic subjects. Although much has been written about the impact of international travel, this book explores ways educators can transform domestic tours for public and parochial school students. The second part of the book offers resource guides for four cities – Washington, D.C.; New York; Philadelphia; and Boston. Teachers, tour directors, and tour operators, will find discussion questions activities as well as detailed background information for four of the most visited cities by students. Many of the questions and strategies can be adapted for other landscapes.
Book Synopsis Travel and Transformation by : Garth Lean
Download or read book Travel and Transformation written by Garth Lean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel and tourism have a long association with the notion of transformation, both in terms of self and social collectives. What is surprising, however, is that this association has, on the whole, remained relatively underexplored and unchallenged, with little in the way of a corpus of academic literature surrounding these themes. Instead, much of the literature to date has focused upon describing and categorising tourism and travel experiences from a supply-side perspective, with travellers themselves defined in terms of their motivations and interests. While the tourism field can lay claim to several significant milestone contributions, there have been few recent attempts at a rigorous re-theorization of the issues arising from the travel/transformation nexus. The opportunity to explore the socio-cultural dimensions of transformation through travel has thus far been missed. Bringing together geographers, sociologists, cultural researchers, philosophers, anthropologists, visual researchers, literary scholars and heritage researchers, this volume explores what it means to transform through travel in a modern, mobile world. In doing so, it draws upon a wide variety of traveller perspectives - including tourists, backpackers, lifestyle travellers, migrants, refugees, nomads, walkers, writers, poets, virtual travellers and cosmetic surgery patients - to unpack a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination since the very first works of Western literature.

These megatrends could lead existing or new businesses to create value propositions specifically dedicated to the new segments once each reaches a critical mass. Drawing on the author’s own experience in the airline industry and related businesses, this book discusses the "how", relating to reimagining the business, re-entrepreneuring the organization, innovating through partnerships, reengaging with customers and employees, and rebranding the business in response to these trends. Book Synopsis Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs by : Craig E. Colten
Download or read book Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs written by Craig E. Colten and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human settlement of the Lower Mississippi River Valley—especially in New Orleans, the region's largest metropolis—has produced profound and dramatic environmental change. From prehistoric midden building to late-twentieth century industrial pollution, Transforming New Orleans and Its Environs traces through history the impact of human activity upon the environment of this fascinating and unpredictable region. In eleven essays, scholars across disciplines––including anthropology, architecture, history, natural history, and geography––chronicle how societies have worked to transform untamed wetlands and volatile floodplains into a present-day sprawling urban center and industrial complex, and how they have responded to the environmental changes brought about by the disruption of the natural setting. This new text follows the trials of native and colonial settlers as they struggled to shape the environment to fit the needs of urbanization. It demonstrates how the Mississippi River, while providing great avenues for commerce, transportation, and colonization also presented the region's greatest threat to urban centers, and details how engineers set about taming the mighty river. Also featured is an analysis of the impact of modern New Orleans upon the surrounding rural parishes and the effect urban pollution has had on the city's water supply and aquatic life.
