Book excerpt: This study supports the notion that transformational leaders, over transactional leaders, produce more effective staff members, supportive school communities, and ultimately higher achieving students. Transformational leaders are relentless about the quality, integrity, and effectiveness of every facet of the position encompassed in daily interactions, weekly plans, monthly monitoring, yearly initiatives, and long-term visions. Reflection and customization to consistently improve and progress using the heart and mind are essential traits of successful transformational leaders. Staff and students perform better under transformational leadership due to the fostered connections by leaders. Teachers under transformational leaders attend more targeted professional development to inform educational practices as a result of their inspired desire to learn. Schools with transformational leaders focus on developing a tripod of support including parents, staff, and students. This study investigated the survey responses from northern New Jersey public school district teachers when asked to respond to thirty questions based on the Leadership Profile Index (LPI). The outcomes presented in this study will benefit leaders and educational institutions looking to make positive change in their school communities. It will support transformational leaders possessing the skills to influence teachers in a manner that impact schools in ways that result in positive outcomes such as inspired teachers and achieving students. Contrary to transactional leadership, this study will affirm that transformational leaders possess the desire to become truly invested in the staff, students, and larger community, which is essential for the building of relationships, a prerequisite of effective leadership. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more common causes of school system failure is the absence of effective leadership. Ideally, school leaders are supposed to be the change agents and facilitators whose primary mission is to improve school culture and bring about the effective transformation that leads to a model Professional Learning Community (PLC). School leaders must focus on developing human capital by working collaboratively with teachers, students, and all who are involved within the system. Effective school leadership has been examined from a variety of perspectives, with the focus ranging from the principles of servant leadership to moral imperatives and distributed perspectives. The debate on what constitutes effective school leadership continues to be wide-ranging and complex. Today’s research scholarship will be the groundwork for how tomorrow’s schools develop a new breed of leadership. Upcoming leaders will face new, unforeseen challenges, so they must re-evaluate strategies and re-work standard processes, in order to promote sustainable development within their respective school systems. Tomorrow’s leaders will be expected to lead a diverse collective of students and teachers, to foster an enduring and empowering culture among students, teachers and other stakeholders committed to build a successful learning community.

Book excerpt: Modern school improvement processes have become collaborative efforts, encouraging administrators and teachers to examine the strengths and weaknesses of a campus in order to develop a plan for building on the strengths and improving the weaknesses. Three factors that are tied together in this process are campus leadership, school climate, and student achievement. As a result, this study examined the relationship between an elementary principal's transformational leadership qualities, the school climate, and the student achievement levels of the campus, based on information regarding the campus' STAAR scores. Survey data was collected from a purposeful sample of elementary school principals and a convenience sample of his or her respective teachers located in a small suburban school district in southeast Texas. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) was used to measure the degree to which a principal displays the factors of a transformational leader based on teacher perceptions and was used by the principals surveyed to self-assess. The School Climate Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) was used to measure teacher perceptions of school climate. Findings indicate a statistically significant positive relationship exists between the factors of transformational leadership and the dimensions of school climate; however, there was not a statistically significant positive relationship between the factors of transformational leadership and student achievement in mathematics. The only transformational leadership characteristic that had a statistically significant relationship on reading achievement was inspirational motivation. Additionally, there was no evidence of a statistically significant relationship between the dimensions of school climate and student achievement in mathematics. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between the school climate dimensions of order and involvement and reading achievement. When determining whether a relationship existed between the principal's perceptions of their own transformational leadership qualities and the teacher's perceptions of those same factors, only two out of the 25 correlations were found to be statistically significant.

Book excerpt: Faced with criticisms of failing to adequately educate students, much research on educational reform in the school systems alludes to the role of principals in the educational process. Specifically, the principals have been identified as the most accountable key individuals responsible for creating conducive school climate. This book, therefore, highlights the relationship between high school teachers' perception of principal leadership style (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire MLQ) and school climate (School Level Environment Questionnaire SLEQ) based on the theoretical framework derived from Theory of Leadership Style. Studying the perceptions of high school teachers in 17 urban secondary schools in Penang, Malaysia, the authors found that principals who are transformational leaders have an effect on school climate whereas transactional leaders only have an effect on one of the six dimensions of school climate. The in-depth analysis offers school boards and superintendents some insight into the style of principal leadership that may best fit the specific school climate needs in their respective school districts.

Book excerpt: Building on 20 years of careful research and real-world testing, the authors show administrators how to assess their schools' health. The goal is to improve middle schools by making sure the "culture" is right for all groups - students, teachers, staff. The authors call their measurement tools the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire Revised for Middle Schools (OCDQ-RM), for tapping the openness of a school's professional interactions, and the Organizational Health Inventory for Middle Schools (OHI-M), for capturing the health of interpersonal relationships in schools. The OCDQ-RM (openness) questionnaire and the OHI-M (health) inventory are included in this book - ready to copy and administer. These measurements are user-friendly and easy to interpret; scoring directions are clearly explained. School leaders, especially superintendents and principals, can use these hands-on tools to understand what's going on in their schools and then make changes as necessary. Actual case studies show how using the questionnaires can help make every middle school a high-quality and positive learning environment.

Book excerpt: EDITORS This introduction to the International Handbook of Educational Lead ership and Administration describes some of the motivation for devel oping the book and several assumptions on which is based much of the work represented in its 31 chapters. A synopsis of the contents of those chapters is also provided. SOME KEY ASSUMPTIONS It is sometimes suggested that the search for an adequate understanding of leadership is doomed to fail. After all, there is little evidence of agreement about the concept in spite of prodigious efforts dating back hundreds if not thousands of years. Such a view is captured, for exam ple, in Bennis' observation that: Of all the hazy and confounding areas in social psychology, leadership theory undoubtedly contends for top nomination. Probably more has been written and less is known about lead ership than any other topic in the behavioural sciences. (1959, page 259) We do not find this state of affairs discouraging (nor entirely accurate) and, of course, it did not prevent Bennis from proceeding either. One reason for our desire to continue in the face of such discouraging words is that a great deal of leadership research aspires to develop a general theory, a theory which applies to all or most domains of organized human activity. This aspiration inevitably produces decontextualized and, therefore, abstract categories of practice. Howard Gardner's (1995) depiction of leadership as story telling is a case in point.
