The object of this work has been to produce a set of design guidelines for terminals. these guidelines are framed upon a user-need survey conducted at Boston/Logan International Airport. The investigation has been organized around three important aspects: 1) how present airport terminal environments affect human behavior; 2) what are the physical characteristics and consequences of terminal design on transfer passengers; 3) how can a broader approach to the design of terminals with passengers in mind be applied. Current terminal design solutions have been "satisfactory" in terms of offering alternations for incoming and departing passengers. Very few terminals though, are prepared to cope with an increasing number of transfer passengers. This study clarifies passengers' characteristics and highlights those issues important for those who need to changed airplanes at an airport. These issues are: time involved in the transfer, means of arriving to the departing airline and the impact of the environment on the waiting passenger. the design guidelines presented as the conclusion of this study are an attempt to accommodate a set of behavioral variables to a system of physical variables. This environmental design approach is a continuing effort to include the user into the programming and design of projects.

Airports consist of the airside and landside area characterized by their capacities for handling demand such as aircraft, air passengers, and air freight/cargo shipments. Regarding spatial configuration, airlines generally operate hub-and-spoke (conventional or legacy airlines) and point-to-point (LCCs - Low Cost Carriers) air route networks. Their fleets consisting of different aircraft types provide transport capacity for serving demand including air passengers and freight/cargo shipments. The ATC/ATM includes the controlled airspace, traffic management and control facilities and equipment on the ground, space, and on board aircraft, and the ATC Controllers). They all provide capacity to handle demand consisting of the flights between origin and destination airports carried out by airline aircraft. The outcome from the interrelationships between demand and capacity at these components materializes as the quality of services. At airports and airlines this is generally expressed by congestion and delays of aircraft, air passengers, and freight/cargo shipments. At ATC/ATM, this is expressed by delays, horizontal and vertical in-efficiency, and safety of flights. Economics of each component relate to its revenues, costs, and profits from handling demand, i.e., providing services of given quality. The sustainability of air transport system has become increasingly important issue for many internal and external actors/stakeholders involved to deal with. This has implied increasing the system’s overall social-economic effects/benefits while reducing or maintaining constant impacts/costs on the environment and society at both global and regional/local scale under conditions of continuous medium- to long term growth.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the factors affecting air passengers' choice of transfer airport in the market between Southeast Asia (SE Asia) and North America (NA). It estimates demand parameters and sheds lights on the business strategies for an airport operator including identifying effective routes to better compete for transfer passengers. Specifically, a discrete choice model is applied to estimate air travelers' utility function from choosing different transfer airports in an origin-destination (OD) market. Our data consists of 78 routes in the SE Asia - NA airline market. Instrument variables (IVs) are used to control for potential endogeneity of airfare, while we treat airport characteristics including minimum connection time (MCT), service, size, and detour degree as exogenous. The main empirical findings are the following: 1) Transfer passengers' airport choice is determined by an airport's characteristics including MCT and service quality, in addition to those traditional factors such as airfares and travel time. 2) Based on estimated utility function parameters, we also quantify transfer passengers' willingness-to-pay for several transfer airport's characteristics. 3) With our estimation results, a case study is conducted for Incheon International Airport to identify candidate routes that have the greatest potential for the airport to increase the number of transfer passengers.
