Book excerpt: The ability to flexibly adjust behaviour to changing environmental demands in order to achieve a certain task goal is a crucial requirement of our everyday life. It is thought to be an important component of the cognitive control of behaviour. The task-switching paradigm can be used to examine those executive control processes. A common finding is that alternating from one task to another is associated with a sizable decrement in performance shown as a substantial reaction time and error cost. Although these task-switching costs can be reduced by advance task preparation, residual task-switching costs remain. Neuropsychological studies suggest that the critical cortical region for cognitive control is the prefrontal cortex. However, neuroimaging studies that investigated task-switching processes have rather emphasized the interplay of prefrontal and parietal cortices. This raises the fundamental question about the different contributions of prefrontal and parietal areas in cognitive control. The present study intended to investigate the reliability and validity of electrophysiological correlates that are involved in task switching. It additionally raised the question if task-switching costs reflect cognitive control processing at all. Five experiments were conducted. All of which were theoretically driven variations of a well established cued task-switching paradigm, where participants randomly switched between two simple tasks. The results of all Experiments showed that when subjects switch between tasks, performance is poorer than when they repeated the task, even when preparation time was long. Additionally, event-related potentials (ERPs) have been recorded. It could have been shown that advanced S-R retrieval is reflected in a cue-related parietal P3. This component increases reliably in amplitude when a new S-R mapping has to be defined (Experiment 1 – 4) or a final response decision can be performed in advance (Experiment. 5). Although it does not explain the behavioural task-switching costs, this preparation effect might also be interpreted to reflect cognitive control processes due to the flexible and rapid configuration of response dispositions. Across all experiments the target-related slow wave was consistently related to the behavioural task-switching costs. This component occurs around the moment of the response. Thus, it can be supposed to reflect a process closely related to the execution of the response like the final implementation of a selected S-R mapping. This indicates that task-switching costs, measured with the cued task-switching paradigm, might arise from interference when transferring a selected S-R mapping into a motor program rather than reflecting cognitive control or executive functions.

The potential modifiability of a person's cognitive and neural processes has been referred to as plasticity. One way to assess cognitive and neural plasticity is to apply training interventions and to measure the related changes in trained and untrained situations. Over the last decade, the literature on the effects of cognitive interventions has been growing rapidly, oftentimes focusing on the magnitude, scope, and maintenance of training-related benefits and their transferability to untrained tasks and abilities. Recent studies show that plasticity is present across the lifespan, although it seems to decline in older age, and that the long-term maintenance as well as the transferability of training gains strongly depends on the type and the intensity of the intervention. The findings from behavioral cognitive training research have also been accompanied by findings from cognitive neuroscience. The related observations oftentimes point to training-induced changes in a number of cortical and subcortical regions, which may be responsible for the magnitude of training and of transfer effects. Thus, cognitive training may be a promising tool for understanding basic mechanisms of adaptive behavior on the one hand and for designing applications and interventions within different disciplines in psychology on the other hand. However, not all studies have consistently shown beneficial effects of cognitive training and some questions that are critical for our understanding of plasticity are still unanswered. What are the key processes mediating training effects on laboratory tasks and in real world situations? Which characteristics of the training process and of the trainings situations mediate transfer effects? Are training effects subject to age-related changes? How are training-induced neural changes in the brain related to improvements in cognitive performance? How effective are training interventions in patients with specific cognitive impairments? To what extent can age-related cognitive decline be compensated by means of cognitive training? The focus of this Research Topic is on training-induced cognitive and neural plasticity across the lifespan. The goal is to provide a broad scope of state-of-the art research in order to enhance our knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying plasticity. Book excerpt: There is overwhelming evidence linking increased physical activity with positive changes in cognitive functioning and brain health. Much of what we know about these interrelationships comes from aerobic exercise training studies with older adults and children. This literature has paved the way for the neuroscientific investigation of mechanisms responsible for exercise-induced cognitive and brain health enhancement, a list that ranges from molecular changes to systemic changes in executive control and neural connectivity. A new perspective has also emerged that aims to understand executive control processes that may underlie the regulation of health behavior. In accordance with this view, physical activity falls under the umbrella of health behaviors that require a substantial amount of executive control. Executive control is a limited resource, and the aging process depletes this resource. People who regularly exercise are said to have higher “self-regulatory control”—planning, goal-shielding and impulse control—than irregular exercisers. The successful maintenance of physical activity participation in lieu of daily cognitive stressors likely reflects an adaptive resistance to control failures. Indeed, a handful of studies have shown the relationship between greater executive control and subsequently higher levels of physical activity. However, little is known about the neural correlates of physical activity adherence or sedentary behavior, with the view that neurocognitive factors have an antecedent and reciprocal influence on these behaviors. No research has focused on the brain networks responsible for the self-regulation of physical activity, which likely overlaps with structures and functions playing critical roles in the regulation of other health behaviors. Interdisciplinary investigations are needed to explain the extent to which physical activity self-regulation and self-regulatory failure is dependent upon, or under the influence of executive control processes and brain networks. Understanding the degree to which self-regulatory resources may be enhanced, restored, and trained will have enormous implications for basic science and applied fields. It is also of great import to understand whether or not physical activity self-regulation is a domain-specific behavior associated with specific brain networks, or to determine the extent to which regulatory network-sharing occurs. The aim of this Frontiers Research Topic is to curate contributions from researchers in social and cognitive neurosciences and related fields, whose work involves the study of physical activity behavior, self-regulation and executive control. For this Research Topic, we, therefore, solicit reviews, original research articles, and opinion papers, which draw theoretical or empirical connections related to sustained physical activity behavior, self-regulatory strategies, cognitive performance, and brain structure and function. While focusing on work in the neurosciences, this Research Topic also welcomes contributions in the form of behavioral studies, psychophysiological investigations, and methodological innovations.
