Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training, in Theory and Practice The numbers who come down to the river side to witness the sport in the summer evenings, testify to the extent to which the enjoyment is shared; and there is not a man on river-bank or barge whose eye does not kindle, nor a lady whose cheek does not mantle up, when the hoarse continuous roar comes on and on, and the crowd sways to and fro, and the boats rush by. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice of the Kindergarten The young woman who has finished her course in kindergarten training and is about to begin the business of teaching often finds it difficult to adjust herself to the new relation; difficult to bring to bear upon the problems which she now meets the various phases of knowledge which she has been acquiring in/the past two years. It is possible that she has been surfeited with new ideas and facts, and many salient points in rela tion to child-training, and in relation to the agencies at her command, have strayed from her memory. She will have frequent recourse to her notebook; but even this repository of informa tion will sometimes be found lacking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Teaching of Modern Languages in Theory and Practice The Teachers' Training Syndicate. The second appears in a slightly altered form. As delivered it consisted largely of oral illustrations and comments, only a portion of which is now printed, while some parts have been expanded. There seems to be at last a disposition to regard seriously the pretensions of Modern Languages to a larger. Place in Education, and I am not therefore without hope that the First Lecture, if only by the criticism which it evokes, may in some way serve to promote their claim, and especially their claim as Literature, to a fair hearing. Teachers generally find details concerning the practice of other teachers interesting, but I can not flatter myself that any one else will read the Second Lecture to the end. The relation of theory to practice. Sound practice is sound theory unconscious of itself; sound theory is merely sound practice conscious of itself. Action, in the fullest sense, would also be theory; it would be doing with the full consciousness of what we 'are doing. The genetic relation between theory and practice. The function of theory to reconstruct and economize practice. The cul tural value of the insight into the idea of education in its organic wholeness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of a Course of Lectures, on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 2: For the Use of the Medical Students of Harvard University As 'the first part of this text book relates to the general theory of medicine, this second part may. Be considered as relating to the practice. This distinction 19 made, however, rather 1n reference to the title of the professorship I hold, and to the duties belonging to it, than to the exact character of the two parts of the work. The second palt is represented as relating to practice, because it will describe particular diseases, and the treatment adapted to each; yet it will admit and require many theoretical discussions. While the work does not presume any previous training or experience in bookkeeping, yet the principles are presented in such a way, the ground covered is so much more extensive than that of routine book keeping, and the assigned exercises are of such a practical character that any one with some prior knowledge of bookkeeping who desires to review the subject thoroughly would find such a knowledge of assistance and could complete the assigned work with profit. A maximum amount of practice material has been provided which may be reduced at the discretion of the instructor in order to meet the demands of his particular course or the needs of his students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Mechanics A course in theoretical mechanics often lacks the strength and vitality resulting from practical applications, whereas a course in applied mechanics is likely to be so technical and limited in its range as to obscure the meaning and s00pe of the fundamental principles involved. By properly combining theory and practice the efficiency of instruction is greatly increased, and mechanics also becomes a powerful instrument for coordinating mathematics and physics with technology. In this text the aim is to present the fundamental principles of mechanics in such a way as to emphasize their actual significance and relationship, and at the same time make them a matter of intelligent interest to the average student of junior grade in col leges and universities, and in technical and engineering schools. In each article the explanation is given a body by direct applica tion to some practical problem within the range of the student's experience or understanding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Technical Writing Every engineer who has given thought to the writing which he has to do as a part of his professional work knows that it is no easy task to get his ideas on paper in satisfactory form. If he is ambitious in this as in other parts of his work, he will succeed in expressing himself adequately just in proportion as he is a clear and well-trained thinker and a keen observer of the ways in which other minds work. If, however, he feels he ought to approach the task of writing more intelligently and to that end tries to get assistance, he discovers that the kind of help he wants is hard to find. The problems of a technical report or magazine article, or of any of the longer works which engineers write, are many of them similar to those of general composition, of literary exposition, or of argumentation; but if the engineer turns for suggestions to treatises on these more definitely literary forms, he will find much that does not apply to his case, and he will fail to get guidance where he most needs it. Yet the special forms of engineering writings have not been studied in schools or given adequate treatment in textbooks. The reason for this lack is not far to seek. Teachers of English have generally felt that the writings of engineers were not worthy of special study as forms of composition; and, without investigating the case, they have assumed that the only preparation necessary for such writing was that given in the course in general composition. Engineers who have acquired the ability to write effectively, on the other hand, have seldom had time to give their less skilled associates instruction in composition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture, Introductory to the Course on the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in the University of New York: Session 1847-8 IN appearing before you, gentlemen, on the present occasion, I can not but feel an Oppressive degree Of anxious solicitude. From my earliest days a student of medicine, I have for nearly a quarter of a century been engaged as a zealous votary and teacher of that science and my yearly increasing experience of its varied functions, has served to impress upon me, more and more deeply, the difficulty of attaining a knowledge of its elements, and of imparting that know ledge to others. I have learned, too, to appreciate more accurately and profoundly, the burdensome responsibilities of the office I have so long filled; responsibilities Of the gravest import at all times - the keen sense of which is unavoidably heightened by my removal hither, into a wider and loftier sphere of action than that in which my younger life has been past. The practical work has now been limited to a one year's course, and theory has disappeared from the syllabus. Under these circum stances it is'thought that many young teachers will more than ever require assistance to Supplement their very brief and very empirical training. This little primer is a contribution towards that assistance, and it is hoped that it may be a real aid to those. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Argument for Manual Training No phase of the history of civilization is more in teresting than that which deals with the theory and practice of education. In the educational theory of an age we find the summation of its philosophy in the educational practice, an epitome of its activities. The school is a microcosm, and properly studied it. Will furnish us the clue to the proper estimation of the status of every problem that vexed a particular generation. It will not solve those problems, but it will tell us how its contemporaries tried to solve them. The reason for this is that the school is the point of contact between each generation and its successor. It is the only point at which one gene ration meets its successor systematically and with a definite purpose in View. And to the attainment of this purpose - the preparation of the rising generation to take its place in life - it brings all its best energies and all its ripest experience.
