Many good resolutions of silence made and confirmed during thirty years of school-work, as every hope of a public character which brightened the early days was destroyed, have been broken by the appearance of this book. Success only strengthened the conviction that it was useless to speak; and yet when the conviction seemed strongest some folly has swept it away. Or is it instinct, like the prescient idiotcy of the butterfly, that lays its eggs on cabbage leaf, or nettle, forced by a blind impulse to thwart its own experience, and deposit part of its life where no sign warrants an idea that it will be allowed to live? Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Teaching of Modern Languages in Theory and Practice The Teachers' Training Syndicate. The second appears in a slightly altered form. As delivered it consisted largely of oral illustrations and comments, only a portion of which is now printed, while some parts have been expanded. There seems to be at last a disposition to regard seriously the pretensions of Modern Languages to a larger. Place in Education, and I am not therefore without hope that the First Lecture, if only by the criticism which it evokes, may in some way serve to promote their claim, and especially their claim as Literature, to a fair hearing. Teachers generally find details concerning the practice of other teachers interesting, but I can not flatter myself that any one else will read the Second Lecture to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching: Or the Motives and Methods of Good School Keeping If the following volume meets a similar fate, what ever its merits, it shall lack a like excuse. This work has had its origin in a desire to contribute something toward elevating an impor tant and rising profession. Its matter comprises the substance of a part of the course of lectures addressed to the classes of the Institution under my charge, during the past two years. Those lectures, unwritten at first, were delivered in a familiar, colloquial style, - their main Object being the inculcation of such practical views as would best promote the improvement of the teacher. In writing the matter out for the press, the same style, to a considerable extent, has been retained, as I have written with an aim at usefulness rather than rhetorical effect. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Education in the Public Schools of the United States: A Symposium Prepared Under the Auspices of the American Committee of the Third International Congress for the Development of Drawing and Art Teaching, London, August, 1908 Grown of just such mixed motives - ideal and practical - there has gradually come into being what may be termed an American system of teaching the arts. This deals with the work in drawing, construction and design, and with the elements of aesthetic training which are taught in primary, intermediate and high schools. With this system of teaching this volume is concerned. The constructive or manual work is treated incidentally, but an effort has been made to present the other phases of the work in the words of teachers who are doing it. Thus it is hoped to make plain the story of its growth and the spirit of its teachings. As a volume, this symposium represents a contribution of the Amer ican Committee of the Third International Congress for the Advance ment of Drawing and Art Teaching, to the interests of the meeting to be held in London in August, 1908. This, however, is but one expression of its purpose. In a broader sense, it is a contribution by the members of the profession in America to the literature of the subject, and is offered as an earnest of their desire to aid in the creation of a professional spirit which is willing to labor in unwonted fields to advance the interests of art teaching. The separate articles will, it is hoped, not only make plain to strangers the nature of the American theory and practice, but will serve to present to the thousands of art teachers throughout the United States a conspectus of the field in which they are at work. Such a view, it is believed, cannot but lend to the interests of the arts and. Through a realization of the extent and importance of the field, to a still keener professional pride and feeling of responsibility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan of Preparing Teachers As a summary of the distinctive elements in the plan Of the San Francisco State Normal School the following features may be stated: the school is a strictly professional school requiring for admission the same degree of general scholarship as that set by the universities, but it does not include general scholarship in its courses of instruction. Systematic provision is made for the selection of persons possessing the inborn teaching personality and for the elimination of those who are lacking in essentials of personality. The purpose of the school is limited to the preparation of students of selected personality to be class teachers in the primary and grammar grades. This prepa ration consists oi training in the arts of instruction as habits, and in the technical pedagogy and theory of teaching the school subjects as perspective to the arts acquired in the Training School. The actual teaching Of the Training School provides for the practice of ten weeks in each grade and in all standard subjects of the primary and grammar school, under careful supervision, covering a practical ex perience of at least two years. The daily teaching is accompanied by the study of the theoretic pedagogy of the subjects taught in the Training School. The practical work has now been limited to a one year's course, and theory has disappeared from the syllabus. Under these circum stances it is'thought that many young teachers will more than ever require assistance to Supplement their very brief and very empirical training. This little primer is a contribution towards that assistance, and it is hoped that it may be a real aid to those.
