Book Synopsis Aspects of wage dynamics in Germany by : Jens Stephani
Download or read book Aspects of wage dynamics in Germany written by Jens Stephani and published by wbv Media GmbH & Company KG. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The German Skills Machine by : Pepper D. Culpepper
Download or read book The German Skills Machine written by Pepper D. Culpepper and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the German economy has grown sluggishly and created few new jobs. These developments have led observers to question the future viability of a model that in the past seemed able to combine economic growth, competitiveness in export markets, and low social inequality. This volume brings together empirical and comparative research from across the social sciences to examine whether or not Germany's system of skill provision is still capable of meeting the economic and social challenges now facing all the advanced capitalist economies. At issue is the question of whether or not the celebrated German training system, an essential element of the high-skill, high-wage equilibrium, can continue to provide the skills necessary for German companies to hold their economic niche in a world characterized by increasing trade and financial interdependence. Combining an examination of the competitiveness of the German training system with an analysis of the robustness of the political institutions that support it, this volume seeks to understand the extent to which the German system for imparting craft skills can adjust to changes in the organization of production in the advanced industrial states.

Book Synopsis Education, Occupation and Social Origin by : Fabrizio Bernardi
Download or read book Education, Occupation and Social Origin written by Fabrizio Bernardi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questioning the assumption that education is the ‘great social equalizer’, this book takes a comparative approach to the social origin–education–destination triangle by examining advantage in 14 different countries, including case studies from Europe, Israel, the USA, Russia and Japan. Contributions from leading experts examine the relation between family background, education and occupational achievement over time and across educational levels, focusing on the relationship between individuals’ social origins and their income and occupational outcomes. Providing new theoretical insights, this book eloquently analyzes a variety of barriers to social mobility. Using concepts of compensatory and boosting advantage to explain the intergenerational transmission of social inequality, it refutes the notion of contemporary societies as education-based and meritocratic, showing that in most of the countries studied there is no sign of decreasing intergenerational association, despite the expansion of education. With its multitude of pertinent case studies, Education, Occupation and Social Origin will be of interest to academics and students of social policy as well as those interested in social inequalities and their evolution over time. It will also be a useful reference for governmental policymakers in the wake of the current economic crisis.
