Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trade and Travel in South America As I still believe that prefaces are more frequently passed over than read, this book has no preface, but it has a distinct object which will soon be manifest; and as facts, shipping, commercial and geographical, may be regarded by the majority of Britons as dry and uninteresting, I desire to so intermix those contained in this volume with the story of my travels round South America, and some of the stories one hears e72 voyage, that the facts, being food for the mind, may come as an agreeable and delightful solid after a light and pleasant entree. To ask you to credit all the yarns re-told would be to make too great a demand upon your credulity. Some are true, others you willjudge of, and all I trust will be found entertaining, tho' the keen wits of my readers may discover some fossils amongst them. The one great fact I have had seared into my mind as with a branding iron, in ajourney covering miles by sea and land, in intimate touch with the trade and commerce of a large and important continent, is. Book Synopsis South America by : Frank G. Carpenter
Download or read book South America written by Frank G. Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South America: Social, Industrial, Political; A Twenty-Five-Thousand-Mile Journey in Search of Information The present volume is the outcome of a journalistic expedition to South America in search of information for the American business man and the general reader. The journey occupied about a year of constant travel, during which the author visited the various countries, spending some time in their capitals and ports, and making many journeys into the interior. During his travels the author wrote letters for many of the leading newspapers of the United States, and at the same time prepared the notes which form the basis of this book. His aim has been to take the reader as far as possible through the scenes described, and for this reason the matter is, in the main, given as it was penned on the ground. The work is more a study of the commercial and social life of the cities, and a description of how the people live and work in the country, than a diary of travel and adventure. It describes the chief industries, notes the characteristic features of the inhabitants, discusses the resources and possibilities of the various countries, and incidentally points out the chances for the investment of American capital and the increase of American trade. These matters, however, are discussed from the standpoint of human interest and for the average reader, the aim being to give a plain, simple narrative, conveying the information about South America most desired at the present time. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Together With Latin America IN preparing this book no attempt has been made to go into all the details of Latin Ameri can trade, and other conditions, or to prepare a complete and analytical treatise on our past, present and future relations with the republics of South and Central America. To do that would require not one, but many, volumes, each far more comprehensive than the present work, for an entire book might be devoted to the business conditions in each republic. Al though conditions, customs and affairs differ greatly in the various countries of Latin America, yet the same generalities prevail, with but few exceptions, and I have endeavored to treat of matters in a broad and comprehensive manner without the finer distinctions which would relate to individual republics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 South America is, to my mind, the Coming Conti nent -the Continent of the future. Everybody knows the wealth of the Argentine, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia; but the interior of Brazil, the largest and richest country of all, not unlike forbidden Tibet, was perhaps better known a century or two ago than now. Few people realize that Brazil is larger than the United States of North America, Germany, Portugal, and a few other countries taken together. The interior is practically a term incognita - although the ancient Jesuits and, at a later date, escaped slaves and native rubber collectors have perhaps found their way inland to a considerable distance. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Straight Business in South America Most of our literature on South America is either rigidly practical or exuberantly Optimistic. Official bulletins and technical works tell the business man how to sell goods on the Southern continent, but overlook other aspects of trade, such as buying, investments and the development of South American resources. Books of travel and diplomatic propaganda exhibit our South ern neighbors to the best possible advantage, but ignore hard facts with which the business man must deal, and which usually astonish him when he visits the South ern continent. Big Ships are plying back and forth through the new canal, and every year it grows a little easier to travel in South America. Nowadays a trip to Callao is likely to be advertised by enterprising steamship companies along with tours to Bermuda or over the Great Lakes. Here are twelve men who have done big things for those countries beyond Panama - the men who ought to head our list of South American acquaintances. Whether a patriot like San Martin, or a rascal like Pizarro; loved by his countrymen like Bolivar, or hated like Rosas; a brilliant success like Mr. Grubb, or a failure like Allen Gardiner - all had their Share in the making of the continent, as Washington and Jackson and Lincoln helped in the making of our country.
