The use of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as internal reinforcement is a pre-emptive measure, which offers a feasible and cost-effective solution to building lasting sustainable infrastructure. Despite the many advantages of GFRP, design codes do not recommend its usage in columns primarily due to the lack of test data, especially under seismic loading. This study was undertaken to understand the seismic behaviour of concrete columns confined by GFRP transverse reinforcement. In the experimental program of this study, sixteen square columns with 305x305 mm cross-section and 1470 mm length were constructed and tested under simulated earthquake loading. Fourteen columns were reinforced with GFRP ties and steel longitudinal bars, while two columns contained GFRP ties and GFRP longitudinal bars. The results, in the form of shear vs. tip deflection and moment vs. curvature hysteresis, showed that GFRP ties can significantly enhance the seismic performance of RC columns. Test results also revealed that if appropriate confinement is provided, columns confined by GFRP ties have flexural strength, energy dissipation capacity, ductility and deformability level comparable to steel-RC columns and thus can be used effectively as primary lateral reinforcement. In the analytical phase of the study, an extensive database of FRP confined columns tested under concentric axial compression was compiled. The applicability of various existing confinement models towards the test data was investigated in detail. A new constitutive stress-strain relationship for FRP confined columns was proposed which captured the behaviour considerably better than the available models. A computation program was developed, utilizing the proposed confinement model, to conduct nonlinear analysis of GFRP confined columns subjected to simulated seismic loading. The program predicted the shear vs. tip deflection and moment vs. curvature envelope curves, and the ductility parameters with reasonable accuracy. Lastly, a critical evaluation of seismic design provisions for FRP confinement in CSA-S806 (2012) was carried out. The code provisions were found to be ambiguous and lacking in several aspects. Based on the available test results, modifications to the current code were suggested.

The second objective of the research was to understand and model the effect of strain gradient on the stress-strain behavior of FRP-confined concrete. With the help of a reliable three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model, the axial stress distribution in FRP-confined concrete column sections under a linear strain distribution was investigated, based on which design-oriented stress-strain models for FRP-confined concrete with due consideration of the strain gradient effect were developed for both circular and square columns. The final objective of the research was to develop reliable numerical models for FRP-confined RC columns subjected to the combined action of axial compression and cyclic lateral/seismic loading. These numerical column models are based on the stress-strain models for FRP-steel-confined concrete developed in the present study as well as loading/unloading rules developed by previous researchers. A hysteretic moment-rotation model was proposed to account for the effect of fixed-end rotations. In addition, an empirical plastic hinge length model was proposed to deal with the issue of deformation localization in FRP-confined square RC columns to achieve objective predictions. The proposed numerical column models provide accurate predictions of the performance of FRP-confined RC columns, especially for the ultimate displacement and energy dissipation capacity, which are very important parameters in seismic design.

Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, FRP composites (carbon, glass, or aramid fibers) have arisen as a method of retrofitting existing reinforced concrete structures to bring them up to current code standards of confinement and ductility. The development of stress-strain models for FRP confined concrete began with the adaptation of steel confinement models then progressed to models specifically developed based on test results from FRP confined specimens. State of the art stress-strain models for FRP confined concrete models may now be validated against a wide variety of published experimental results. Recent publications show researchers branching out and looking at other aspects of FRP confined concrete behavior, including the impact of sustained service loads on long term and ultimate behavior. An experimental program which examines the effects of sustained service loading on the ultimate axial performance of FRP confined concrete is presented. The program's purpose is to determine whether or not a material model developed without the presence of a sustained load accurately predicts the ultimate stress-strain response of FRP confined concrete previously subjected to a sustained service load. Equipment and procedures were developed to model the critical events in a building life cycle: construction, sustained service loading, minor critical events, rehabilitation, and ultimate performance. Varying the order of these events produces a simulated life cycle allowing analysis of the impact of strain history on ultimate performance. The results of the experimental program indicate that the presence of a sustained service load changes the expected failure mode from FRP rupture to FRP de-lamination and the stress-strain response of a specimen is approximately 10% below published models when sustained service loads are included in the life cycle. A comprehensive modeling process is proposed for modeling significant events in a structure's life cycle. Impacts on earthquake engineering and reliability studies are addressed and future research suggested. This research shows that life cycle modeling can improve the design and rehabilitation of structures so that they meet safety requirements in future seismic events.

As such, it is essential to apply a suitable analytical tool to estimate their structural behaviour considering all failure mechanisms such as axial, shear, and flexural failures. This book highlights the development of a fiber beam-column element accounting for shear effects and the effect of tension stiffening through reinforcement-to-concrete bond, along with the employment of suitable constitutive material laws.

Book excerpt: In seismic design practice, hollow concrete columns offer an efficient alternative especially for tall bridge columns. The confinement in critical regions of these columns is not well understood and the confinement models developed for solid concrete sections are used to characterize these columns. This report identifies several shortcomings in current practice associated with hollow column design. Using experimental and analytical means, it is shown that the confined concrete behavior in hollow concrete columns is different from that established for solid sections. Recommendations to improve analysis and design of hollow columns are presented with experimental verification. Modification to alter the confinement models developed for solid sections and a design example are also provided.

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: In order to address the issue of corrosion of steel in concrete structures, Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) is slowly gaining acceptability as a replacement of steel. This thesis aims to evaluate the feasibility of using GFRP as internal lateral reinforcement in columns. A total of eight circular columns were tested under simulated earthquake forces which included constant axial load and cyclic lateral displacement excursions. In addition to the moment vs. curvature response and shear vs. deflection behaviour, a number of ductility parameters related to curvature, displacement, and energy dissipation are used to evaluate the performance of specimens. Test results demonstrated similar shear and moment capacities compared to the columns with confining steel reinforcement. Due to their linear elastic behaviour until rupture at a strain of approximate 0.02, GFRP spirals provided continuous confinement to the columns, which displayed acceptable deformability. The application of GFRP as lateral reinforcement in concrete columns avoids the corrosion concern and delivers a strong and ductile response.
