Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-Active Suspension Control Design for Vehicles presents a comprehensive discussion of designing control algorithms for semi-active suspensions. It also covers performance analysis and control design. The book evaluates approaches to different control theories, and it includes methods needed for analyzing and evaluating suspension performances, while identifying optimal performance bounds. The structure of the book follows a classical path of control-system design; it discusses the actuator or the variable-damping shock absorber, models and technologies. It also models and discusses the vehicle that is equipped with semi-active dampers, and the control algorithms. The text can be viewed at three different levels: tutorial for novices and students; application-oriented for engineers and practitioners; and methodology-oriented for researchers. The book is divided into two parts. The first part includes chapters 2 to 6, in which fundamentals of modeling and semi-active control design are discussed. The second part includes chapters 6 to 8, which cover research-oriented solutions and case studies. The text is a comprehensive reference book for research engineers working on ground vehicle systems; automotive and design engineers working on suspension systems; control engineers; and graduate students in control theory and ground vehicle systems. Appropriate as a tutorial for students in automotive systems, an application-oriented reference for engineers, and a control design-oriented text for researchers that introduces semi-active suspension theory and practice Includes explanations of two innovative semi-active suspension strategies to enhance either comfort or road-holding performance, with complete analyses of both Also features a case study showing complete implementation of all the presented strategies and summary descriptions of classical control algorithms for controlled dampers

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Automotive Engineering, Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, language: English, abstract: To improve the road handling and passenger comfort of a vehicle, a suspension system is provided. An active suspension system is considered to be better than the passive suspension system. In this thesis, 2 degrees of freedom of a linear quarter car active suspension system is designed, which is subject to different disturbances on the road. Since the parametric uncertainty in the spring, the shock absorber, mass and the actuator has been considered, robust control is used. In this thesis, H∞ and μ− synthesis controllers are used to improve the driving comfort and the ability to drive the car on the road. For the analysis of the time domain, using a MATLAB script program and performed a test using four disturbance inputs of the road (bump, random, sinusoidal and harmonic) for the suspension deflection, the acceleration of the body and the body travel for the active suspension with the H∞ controller and active suspension with μ− synthesis controller and the comparative simulation and reference results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented active suspension system with μ− synthesis controller. In addition, in this thesis, comparison have been made between the active suspension system with μ−synthesis controller and 5 different robust controller for suspension deflection, body acceleration and body travel tests using bump, random, sinusoidal pavements and harmonic road disturbances. Body accelerations comparison of the active suspension system with μ−synthesis controller with VW (Volkswagen) Passat B5 passenger car is done for a bump road input disturbance and the result shows that there is a 50% reduction in body acceleration for the active suspension system with μ− synthesis controller.

Book excerpt: This research is mainly about the control design, analysis, and simulation of a vehicle suspension system. In order to decrease the vibration of the vehicle, a passive suspension system, semi-active suspension system, and active suspension system are taken into consideration. The central idea is based on the combination of a nonlinear energy sink and a skyhook. The car performance such as car body acceleration, suspension deflection, and wheel deflection are measured to compare the proposed control with a passive suspension system, a skyhook suspension system (semi-active suspension system), and a nonlinear energy sink suspension system (active suspension system). According to the comparison, it shows that the proposed system comprised of a nonlinear energy sink and skyhook achieves better performance with regards to the performance objectives. Based on the result, a hydraulic actuator is applied to mimic the force obtained from the proposed suspension system. Three control methods are utilized to achieve the purpose. The first control input is designed by using a singular perturbation technique combined with adaptive control. The second control method is based on multiple surface sliding mode control. By designing two sliding surfaces, an ideal tracking performance can also be obtained. Lastly, model predictive control is utilized, which can be treated as a special optimal control. By optimizing the cost function involved in tracking error and control input at each sample time, an ideal control input can be obtained from it. The first two methods are supported by Lyapunov based stability analysis to prove that the tracking error will approach zero asymptotically. Simulation results for each method are also given to show the vehicle performance and tracking performance.

The maximum force that a tire can generate in the desired direction is greatly influenced by the tire's camber. Camber is the lean angle of a tire with respect to the road where a value of zero camber is perpendicular. In principal a tire can generate the most straight-line braking force with zero camber, but can generate the most turning force with camber leaning the tire toward the turn. By keeping the camber zero while traveling straight and leaning the tire during cornering, tire wear can be minimized and grip maximized. A design is presented which cambers tires in the direction of the turn when the chassis rolls and has zero camber when the vehicle turns straight. Unlike typical performance automotive suspensions, this design does not camber the tires during heave which occurs when traveling over a speed bump or when extra weight is added to the vehicle assuming no chassis roll. ADAMS modeling software is used to verify the functionality of the new suspension design under various operating conditions, and generates movies to illustrate operation of suspension. Mathematical equations are also presented to estimate camber for various suspension geometries, spring stiffness, and sway bars. Also the equations can be used to predict the center of gravity height of a vehicle for which no roll will occur during lateral acceleration. The procedure for designing this suspension for various parameters is included since the optimal camber angle is different for each tire design and tire load.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of vehicle suspension system is to isolate the vehicle main body from any road geometrical irregularities in order to improve the passengers ride comfort and to maintain good handling characteristics subject to different road profile. This dissertation aim at establishing a mathematical model and a control strategy for a nonlinear hydraulically actuated active suspension system. A model of nonlinear, four Degree of Freedom (DOF) half vehicle active suspension system with hydraulic actuator dynamics and a similar nonlinear, four DOF half vehicle passive suspension system model was developed using Matlab/Simulink environment. A control system consisting of two controller loops was also developed, namely inner loop controller for force tracking control of the hydraulic actuator and outer loop controller to resist the effects of road induced disturbances. The outer loop controller employed a proportional integral and differential (PID) control strategy. On the other hand, a proportional integral and differential (PID) force feedback control scheme was employed in the inner loop controller to stabilize the hydraulic actuator in such a way that it is able to supply the actual force as close as possible with the optimum targeted force supplied by the PID controller. Two types of road (discrete and random) inputs were employed and a simulation study using Matlab/Simulink environment was performed to test the effectiveness and robustness of the control scheme. The performance of the active suspension system was assessed by comparing it response to that of passive suspension system. Results obtained shows that, the active suspension system developed a good dynamic response and a better ride comfort when compared to the conventional passive suspension system.

This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is motivated by the pivotal issue: what is the performance limit of active control and energy harvesting? It aims to develop systematic design methodologies with a “visualization technique” where the performance limit can be readily determined solely based on visual inspections. Modern technological systems have evolved toward high speed, heavy load, lightweight, flexible operation and extreme conditions, as demonstrated in aerospace, marine, transportation and manufacturing industries. The associated vibration and noise issues have become such problematic that they may significantly confine the performance of the systems, to say the discomfort at least. Through the geometric representation of the performance specifications, fundamental issues such as (1) the existence of feasible controllers; (2) the optimality of controllers; (3) the performance limit of controllers; (4) compromisability among the performance specifications; (5) the synthesis of controllers; and (6) the influence of constraints on optimal solutions can all be resolved within the proposed framework. The state of the art is thus refined with a new approach complementary to those optimization-based routines, where extra effort would have to be exercised to disclose the compromisability of performance specifications. The proposed book will result in a new design methodology—performance limit-oriented active control. It was initiated by the author with the project “Active Control for Performance Limit” (ACPL). A series of fundamental results are obtained and will be disseminated in this book. The results are verified through extensive numerical demonstrations and are expected to provide useful guidance for practical engineering in the vibration and noise industry and research.
