Book excerpt: The wide usage of computers to keep records systematically has led to a number of different-specific databases to be developed, which is one of the persistent problems the database and information management communities have to deal with. These great number of databases created, has resulted into incompatibility among databases. Thus, this work proposes an approach in solving the problem of interoperability between heterogeneous databases through the alignment of heterogeneous databases. This can be accomplished by determining one to one mapping between database elements, and thereafter reformulates the query in such a way that will be compatible to different database platforms involved. In this regard, this work provides a framework for integrated heterogeneous database using schema matching as an approach, which can be used to reconcile heterogeneous database systems and further enhance automatic interoperability among database systems. The interoperability between databases will be supported without modifying the database or loosing their autonomy.

Book excerpt: Solutions for Networked Databases: How to Move from Heterogeneous Structures to Federated Concepts reviews developments in standards and ad hoc solutions aimed at providing cross-database connectivity for networked databases. The emphasis is on how to move from heterogeneous structures to federated concepts. The advent of the multidatabase is discussed, along with schemata, dictionaries, and protocols. Applications with federated databases are also considered. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to database and knowledge bank concepts; reliability and availability characteristics; and the synergy necessary to create and sustain federated databases. Centralized and distributed databases are then compared, and the different ways of managing distributed databases are outlined. Subsequent chapters focus on the importance of treating the networked database as a corporate resource; the use of schemata to solve cross-database problems; the Information Resource Dictionary System; and application programming interface and remote data access. A solution to heterogeneous distributed databases, the Data Access Integrated Services (DAIS), is described. This monograph is written for specialists in computers and communications.

Book excerpt: Schema matching is the task of providing correspondences between concepts describing the meaning of data in various heterogeneous, distributed data sources. Schema matching is one of the basic operations required by the process of data and schema integration, and thus has a great effect on its outcomes, whether these involve targeted content delivery, view integration, database integration, query rewriting over heterogeneous sources, duplicate data elimination, or automatic streamlining of workflow activities that involve heterogeneous data sources. Although schema matching research has been ongoing for over 25 years, more recently a realization has emerged that schema matchers are inherently uncertain. Since 2003, work on the uncertainty in schema matching has picked up, along with research on uncertainty in other areas of data management. This lecture presents various aspects of uncertainty in schema matching within a single unified framework. We introduce basic formulations of uncertainty and provide several alternative representations of schema matching uncertainty. Then, we cover two common methods that have been proposed to deal with uncertainty in schema matching, namely ensembles, and top-K matchings, and analyze them in this context. We conclude with a set of real-world applications. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1.0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine", language: English, abstract: Federated information systems provide access to interrelated data that is distributed over multiple autonomous and heterogeneous data sources. The integration of these sources demands for flexible and extensible architectures that balance both, the highest possible autonomy and a reasonable degree of information sharing. In current federated information systems, the integrated data sources do only have passive functionality with regard to the federation. However, continuous improvements take the functionality of modern databases beyond former limits. The significant improvement, on which this work is based on, is the ability of modern active database systems to execute programs written in a standalone programming language as user-defined functions or stored procedures from within their database management systems. We introduce Enhanced Active Database Systems as a new subclass of active databases that are able to interact with other components of a federation using external program calls from within triggers. We present several concepts and architectures that are specifically developed for Enhanced Active Databases to improve interoperability and consistency in federated information systems. As the basic concept we describe Active Event Notifications to provide an information system with synchronous and asynchronous update notifications in real-time. Based on this functionality, Enhanced Active Databases are able to actively participate in global integrity maintenance executing partial constraint checks on interrelated remote data. Furthermore, we present an architecture for a universal wrapper component that especially supports Active Event Notifications, which makes it perfectly suitable for event-based federated systems with real-time data processing. This tightly coupled wrapper architecture is used to build up the Dígame architecture for a peer data management system with push-based data and schema replication. Finally, we propose a Link Pattern Catalog as a guideline to model and analyze P2P-based information systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on Schema Matching, the task of (semi-)automatically identifying semantic correspondences between elements of metadata structures, such as, database schemas, ontologies, and XML message formats. It is of key importance for interoperability and data integration in numerous applications, such as data warehousing, integration of web-sources, message mapping in E-business, and ontology alignment on the Semantic Web. However, in today's systems, schema matching is still manual; a time-consuming, tedious, and error-prone process, which becomes increasingly impractical considering the high complexity and number of schemas and data sources to be dealt with. In this book, the author Do Hong Hai describes the architecture, functionality, and evaluation of the schema matching system COMA++ (Combining Matchers), which was developed by himself in his Ph.d thesis. COMA++ represents a generic and customizable system for semi-automatic schema matching, which can combine different match algorithms in a flexible way. In comprehensive evaluations using large real-world schemas and ontologies, COMA++ has shown high quality as compared to the state of the art, proving its practicability for different domains. In addition, the book describes a new data integration approach, GenMapper (Generic Mapper), which utilizes instance-level correspondences between objects of data sources.

Book excerpt: Component Database Systems is a collection of invited chapters by the researchers making the most influential contributions in the database industry's trend toward componentization This book represents the sometimes-divergent, sometimes-convergent approaches taken by leading database vendors as they seek to establish commercially viable componentization strategies. Together, these contributions form the first book devoted entirely to the technical and architectural design of component-based database systems. In addition to detailing the current state of their research, the authors also take up many of the issues affecting the likely future directions of component databases. If you have a stake in the evolution of any of today's leading database systems, this book will make fascinating reading. It will also help prepare you for the technology that is likely to become widely available over the next several years. * Is comprised of contributions from the field's most highly respected researchers, including key figures at IBM, Oracle, Informix, Microsoft, and POET. * Represents the entire spectrum of approaches taken by leading software companies working on DBMS componentization strategies. * Covers component-focused architectures, methods for hooking components into an overall system, and support for component development. * Examines the component technologies that are most valuable to Web-based and multimedia databases. * Presents a thorough classification and overview of component database systems.

Details of the components of the architecture to be implemented in the initial breadboard version are also described. Although additional research is requierd to fill in the details of optimization and incompatible data handling, the architecture already contains several innovative ideas in integrating distributed heterogeneous databases. These include: the idea of using an integration data base to resolve data incompatibility; the idea of using a mapping language to uniformly define the global schema in terms of the local schemata and the integration schema; and the idea of using query modification and query graph decomposition to transform a global query into local queries and queries over the integration database.
