Sie beschreibt dabei für den Großteil der Bevölkerung heutzutage eine charakteristische Eigenschaft von Gütern, Sachen oder Dienstleistungen, durch welche sich diese von anderen unterscheiden lässt. Merkmale anhand derer Qualität differenziert werden kann sind bspw. bessere Einsatzstoffe, bessere Verarbeitung, längere Nutzungsdauer und Gewährleistung der Produkte, besseres Design, Preisunterschiede, u.v.m. Diese Unterscheidungen zielen zumeist auf das Endprodukt ab, während Faktoren, welche aus Sicht des Unternehmens bereits zur Erstellung des Produktes nötig sind, lange Zeit vom Management und von den Endverbrauchern kaum beachtet bzw. als nicht entscheidend empfunden wurden. Dazu zählen z.B. Mitarbeiterpotentiale, Führungskonzepte, und unternehmerische Funktionen. Diese Sichtweise änderte sich erst Mitte der achtziger Jahre, nachdem der Qualitätsbegriff durch japanische Unternehmen einem fundamentalen Wandel unterlag. Dabei wurde das Hauptaugenmerk auf die Einbindung des Qualitätsbegriffes als Managementaufgabe gelegt. Die bislang vorherrschenden Denkmuster der oberen Hierarchieebenen mussten dazu grundlegend verändert und revolutioniert werden. Die Ziele bestehen durch die fortwährende Globalisierung letztendlich darin, dass das Qualitätsbewusstsein des gesamten Unternehmens gestärkt, eine stärkere Beteiligung der Mitarbeiter forciert, die Kundenzufriedenheit gesteigert und die Produktivität verbessert werden. Despite the initial fervor associated with such standardi- tion activities, it is no less frequent that vendors either choose to drop their support for standards that they earlier championed on an opportunistic basis or elect only to partially support them in their commercial offerings. Moreover, the results of the standardization processes themselves are a concern. BPM standards tend to deal with complex concepts, yet they are never properly de?ned and all-too-often not informed by established research. The result is a plethoraof languagesand tools, with no consensuson conceptsand their implem- tation. They also fail to provide clear direction in the way in which BPM standards should evolve. One can also observe a dichotomy between the “business” side of BPM and its “technical” side.
