Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper estimates the potential output (and the output gap) in Chile using several different methodologies. After a structural brake in 1998, the average growth rate of potential output in Chile declined from over 7 percent to 3-4 percent in the aggregate economy, but to less than 2 percent in the natural resource sector. The contributions to aggregate potential output growth of the natural resource sector and the non-natural resource sector are estimated, finding that the contribution to growth of the natural resource sector is non-linear-increasing during the 1990s, declining during the 2000s, and turning negative in the mid-2000s-despite the monotonic decrease in the share of natural resource output in aggregate output.

Book excerpt: By the end of 2007, Chile's total factor productivity was lower than ten years earlier, a performance that contrasted sharply with the previous decade, when productivity grew by a cumulative 30 percent. This paper assesses productivity trends in Chile, by decomposing productivity into investment-specific technological change (associated with improvements in the quality of capital) and neutral technological change (related to the organization of productive activities). It concludes that investment-specific technological improvements have contributed significantly to long-term growth in Chile, in line with trends observed in other net commodity exporters, while neutral technological change has been slow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents 11 papers written by renowned, national and international scholars that add substantially to the body of empirical research and policy lessons on how to raise economic growth and prosperity in Chile. This book presents a large body of new empirical evidence on the effects of the low quality of education on growth, productivity, the adoption and innovation of new technologies and it also suggests policies to enhance quality and equity at all levels of the educational system. New findings about the effects of the successive energy price hikes on growth and productivity are the foundation to discuss policies reducing the price of energy to boost growth. Other research discusses the dynamics of productivity in Chile, the performance of economic sectors in accounting for such dynamics, the effects of labor market policies in slowing the reallocation process towards high-productivity activities, reforms to financial markets and failures of the policymaking process and institutions and reforms to improve them. All papers recommend policies that would eventually lead the country to a virtuous cycle featuring high growth and better income distribution. This volume also includes a discussion of the MIT economist Daron Acemoglu about why Latin America is poor today, in light of the findings of his best selling book Why Nations Fail (co-written with James Robinson) in order to address Chile’s long-term challenges to achieve economic development. In the final chapter of the book Acemoglu, along with the MIT economist Ricardo Caballero, Vittorio Corbo, Patricio Meller and Jorge Marshall discuss the challenges that Chile is facing to boost growth and to reduce inequality.

Book excerpt: Total-factor productivity (TFP) is a variable which accounts for effects in total output not caused by traditionally measured inputs of labour and capital. If all inputs are accounted for, then total factor productivity can be taken as a measure of an economy’s long-term technological change or technological dynamism, scale of economies and efficiency.TFP is regarded as the more accurate productivity measure than the partial productivity measure. The broader the coverage of resources, the better is the productivity measure. The best measure is one that compares output with the combined use of all resources” (Chandel, 2007). TFP is the change in output relative to a weighted combination of all inputs, where the weights are factor shares. Some authors also define TFP as contribution of non-traditional inputs to output. For example non inputs were technology, irrigation, infrastructure, managerial skills and so on.The calculated TFP is decomposed in to a) Scale of economies b) Technical change and c) Residual or Efficiency or Management to know the contribution of non-conventional inputs to the output growth. There are different approaches for estimation of TFP, such as Production function approach, Growth accounting approach and Non-Parametric approach.World ScenarioCoelli, et al., 2003, conducted a study on Total Factor Productivity growth in Agriculture: A Malmquist index analysis of 93 Countries. The results shown that, Asia as a region posted the highest TFP growth of 2.9 percent followed by North America (consisting of USA and Canada), Australasia, Europe, Africa and South America. South America has posted the lowest growth rate of 0.6 per cent followed by Africa with 1.3 per cent growth in TFP. A surprising result is that over the period 1980-2000. The results on continent-level information for six regions revealed that, the largest difference occurs for South and Central America, where the average TFP growth measure increases from 0.6 percent to 1.5 per cent per annum.Country ScenarioChand et al., 2011, estimated average annual TFP growth for the major crops cultivated in India. Among cereals, wheat experienced the highest growth in TFP index during the three decades from 1975 to 2005. Among pulses, the TFP growth was estimated to be 0.5 per cent for moong, followed by gram (0.2 per cent). TFP for Arhar and Urad crops displayed a decline over the past three decades. The TFP is a useful indicator of changes in long-term productivity. The TFP growth (TFPG) in the oilseed sector varied in the range 0.7-0.8 per cent per annum. An attempt was made to analyze the TFP of ragi in Karnataka. The results shown that, TFP for ragi increased from 1.17 during 1999 to 1.81 in 2013. The TFP fell to 0.61 in 2011 and 0.67 in 2008 due to drought during that period. The highest TFP index was observed in 2007-08 (2.18). The average TFP index for 15 years was 1.12.The output index of ragi increased from 1.40 in 1999 to 1.79 in 2013. The average input index of ragi was 1.14 for fifteen years.Suresh, K. 2013, conducted a study on Economic impact of public sector agricultural research in ragi and redgram in Karnataka. The results revealed that, the Total Factor Productivity index of redgram grew at the rate of 3.31 per cent per annum and that of ragi grew at 4.75 per cent per annum. Thus, Public research significantly contributed to TFP growth in ragi.ConclusionTotal factor productivity can be estimated by different approaches. In growth accounting approach the tornqvist-thiel index is commonly used which is based on translog production function. The TFP decomposition analysis helps to identify factors which influence the total factor productivity growth. The results of the decomposition analysis indicate which variable contribute to growth in productivity. This will enable policy makers to suggest plan and programmes to achieve total factor productivity growth.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether the agglomeration of economic activity in regional clusters affects long-run manufacturing total factor productivity growth in an emerging market context. It explores a large firm-level panel dataset for Chile during a period characterized by high growth rates and rising regional income inequality (1992-2004). The findings are clear-cut. Locations with greater concentration of a particular sector did not experience faster growth in total factor productivity during this period. Rather, local sector diversity was associated with higher long-run growth in total factor productivity. However, there is no evidence that the diversity effect was driven by the local interaction with a set of suppliers and/or clients. The authors interpret this as evidence that agglomeration economies are driven by other factors, such as the sharing of access to specialized inputs not provided solely by a single sector, such as skills or financing.
