Book excerpt: In 2001 four women were murdered daily in the United States by their spouses. Nearly a decade later there has been a sharp rise in family violence, with women as the primary target. It is evidenced by more than double the calls to hotlines, hospital emergency rooms and crisis shelters overflowing with victims. Walk-ins are up 240 percent in 2009 compared to 2008, while the number of women and children staying in shelters has increased by more than 70 percent. Invariably, when poverty rises, domestic violence and specifically wife abuse also rises. Even in so-called civilized nations such as the United States, millions of wives are beaten and raped by their spouses. Hardly discussed is the psychological torture meted out to women around the world by narcissistic husbands. To get free of the trap of wife abuse, we need to break it down, analyze it and confront it, so as to understand that it begins in the mind - first of the perpetrator, then of the victim. We can pass laws, but how do we change minds? How do we liberate minds from the insidious spread of emotional and psychological abuse that ends in physical abuse? While the number of women suffering physical abuse is in the tens of millions, those suffering mental torture at the hands of men number more than one hundred million. With the rise of fundamentalism in an era of a new Great Depression and growing fascism, this is not a minor social issue. How long will you continue to tolerate it? When will you face the endless vivisection of women's minds and bodies? When will you accept your responsibility to reclaim your humanity by ending their agony once and for all?

Book excerpt: Winner, A Choice Outstanding Academic Book From 1964 until 1985, Brazil was ruled by a military regime that sanctioned the systematic use of torture in dealing with its political opponents. The catalog of what went on during that grim period was originally published in Portuguese as Brasil: Nunca Mais (Brazil: Never Again) in 1985. The volume was based on the official documentation kept by the very military that perpetrated the horrific acts. These extensive documents include military court proceedings of actual trials, secretly photocopied by lawyers associated with the Catholic Church and analyzed by a team of researchers. Their daring project—known as BNM for Brasil: Nunca Mais—compiled more than 2,700 pages of testimony by political prisoners documenting close to three hundred forms of torture. The BNM project proves conclusively that torture was an essential part of the military justice system and that judicial authorities were clearly aware of the use of torture to extract confessions. Still, it took more than a decade after the publication of Brasil: Nunca Mais for the armed forces to admit publicly that such torture had ever taken place. Torture in Brazil, the English version of the book re-edited here, serves as a timely reminder of the role of Brazil's military in past repression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelations about U.S. torture and prisoner abuse in blatant violation of the long-established and universally recognized Geneva Conventions have horrified most Americans. Nevertheless, it has been argued that the high stakes of the War on Terror have made the protections offered by the Conventions obsolete, or that the abuses are the work of a few rogue soldiers and officers. This book reaches past the headlines into the historical record to document POW torture and also domestic prisoner abuse dating well back in our history as well as government and military knowledge of and collusion in such ostensibly illegal and reprehensible acts. Is torture and prisoner abuse justified in the name of some greater good? As a society we shall have to decide. The historical record presented here can contribute much to an informed national discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torture doctors invent and oversee techniques to inflict pain and suffering without leaving scars. Their knowledge of the body and its breaking points and their credible authority over death certificates and medical records make them powerful and elusive perpetrators of the crime of torture. In The Torture Doctors, Steven H. Miles fearlessly explores who these physicians are, what they do, how they escape justice, and what can be done to hold them accountable. At least one hundred countries employ torture doctors, including both dictatorships and democracies. While torture doctors mostly act with impunity—protected by governments, medical associations, and licensing boards—Miles shows that a movement has begun to hold these doctors accountable and to return them to their proper role as promoters of health and human rights. Miles’s groundbreaking portrayal exposes the thinking and psychology of these doctors, and his investigation points to how the international human rights community and the medical community can come together to end these atrocities.
