Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Mathematics Studies presents work done on composition operators during the last 25 years. Composition operators form a simple but interesting class of operators having interactions with different branches of mathematics and mathematical physics. After an introduction, the book deals with these operators on Lp-spaces. This study is useful in measurable dynamics, ergodic theory, classical mechanics and Markov process. The composition operators on functional Banach spaces (including Hardy spaces) are studied in chapter III. This chapter makes contact with the theory of analytic functions of complex variables. Chapter IV presents a study of these operators on locally convex spaces of continuous functions making contact with topological dynamics. In the last chapter of the book some applications of composition operators in isometries, ergodic theory and dynamical systems are presented. An interesting interplay of algebra, topology, and analysis is displayed. This comprehensive and up-to-date study of composition operators on different function spaces should appeal to research workers in functional analysis and operator theory, post-graduate students of mathematics and statistics, as well as to physicists and engineers.

Book excerpt: In this memoir, we study the interrelations between the topological, measure theoretical and geometrical structures in certain classes of Banach spaces. The focus is on those spaces whose bounded subsets have arbitrarily norm-small convex combinations of slices. This class contains spaces with the Radon-Nikodym property as well as B-convex Banach spaces. The topological analysis leads to the concept of "first class functions around sets". This extension of the classical notion of Baire-1 functions is developed in a general non-linear setting.

It contains topics such as the fixed point theory starting from Ky Fan's KKM covering and quasi-Schwartz operators. It also includes over 200 exercises to reinforce important concepts.;The author explores three fundamental results on Banach spaces, together with Grothendieck's structure theorem for compact sets in Banach spaces (including new proofs for some standard theorems) and Helley's selection theorem. Vector topologies and vector bornologies are examined in parallel, and their internal and external relationships are studied. This volume also presents recent developments on compact and weakly compact operators and operator ideals; and discusses some applications to the important class of Schwartz spaces.;This text is designed for a two-term course on functional analysis for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, mathematical physics, economics and engineering. It may also be used as a self-study guide by researchers in these disciplines.

In roughterms, there arethree types ofthem:algebrasofboundedlinear operators on Banach spaces with composition and the operator norm, al- bras consisting of bounded continuous functions on topological spaces with pointwise product and the uniform norm, and algebrasof integrable functions on locally compact groups with convolution as multiplication. These all play a key role in modern analysis. Much of operator theory is best approached from a Banach algebra point of view and many questions in complex analysis (such as approximation by polynomials or rational functions in speci?c - mains) are best understood within the framework of Banach algebras. Also, the study of a locally compact Abelian group is closely related to the study 1 of the group algebra L (G). There exist a rich literature and excellent texts on each single class of Banach algebras, notably on uniform algebras and on operator algebras. This work is intended as a textbook which provides a thorough introduction to the theory of commutative Banach algebras and stresses the applications to commutative harmonic analysis while also touching on uniform algebras. In this sense and purpose the book resembles Larsen’s classical text [75] which shares many themes and has been a valuable resource. However, for advanced graduate students and researchers I have covered several topics which have not been published in books before, including some journal articles.

Book excerpt: The present book grew out of several courses which I have taught at the University of Zürich and at the University of Maryland during the past seven years. It is primarily intended to be a systematic text on locally convex spaces at the level of a student who has some familiarity with general topology and basic measure theory. However, since much of the material is of fairly recent origin and partly appears here for the first time in a book, and also since some well-known material has been given a not so well-known treatment, I hope that this book might prove useful even to more advanced readers. And in addition I hope that the selection ofmaterial marks a sufficient set-offfrom the treatments in e.g. N. Bourbaki [4], [5], R.E. Edwards [1], K. Floret-J. Wloka [1], H.G. Garnir-M. De Wilde-J. Schmets [1], AGrothendieck [13], H. Heuser [1], J. Horvath [1], J.L. Kelley-I. Namioka et al. [1], G. Köthe [7], [10], A P. Robertson W. Robertson [1], W. Rudin [2], H.H. Schaefer [1], F. Treves [l], A Wilansky [1]. A few sentences should be said about the organization of the book. It consists of 21 chapters which are grouped into three parts. Each chapter splits into several sections. Chapters, sections, and the statements therein are enumerated in consecutive fashion.

Book excerpt: The study of composition operators forges links between fundamental properties of linear operators and beautiful results from the classical theory of analytic functions. This book provides a self-contained introduction to both the subject and its function-theoretic underpinnings. The development is geometrically motivated, and accessible to anyone who has studied basic graduate-level real and complex analysis. The work explores how operator-theoretic issues such as boundedness, compactness, and cyclicity evolve - in the setting of composition operators on the Hilbert space H2 into questions about subordination, value distribution, angular derivatives, iteration, and functional equations. Each of these classical topics is developed fully, and particular attention is paid to their common geometric heritage as descendants of the Schwarz Lemma.

Book excerpt: The multiplier ideals of an ideal in a regular local ring form a family of ideals parameterized by non-negative rational numbers. As the rational number increases the corresponding multiplier ideal remains unchanged until at some point it gets strictly smaller. A rational number where this kind of diminishing occurs is called a jumping number of the ideal. In this manuscript the author gives an explicit formula for the jumping numbers of a simple complete ideal in a two-dimensional regular local ring. In particular, he obtains a formula for the jumping numbers of an analytically irreducible plane curve. He then shows that the jumping numbers determine the equisingularity class of the curve.

Book excerpt: Written by a distinguished specialist in functional analysis, this book presents a comprehensive treatment of the history of Banach spaces and (abstract bounded) linear operators. Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to study holomorphic mappings in infinite dimensional spaces, in all likelihood, arose for the first time in connection with the development of nonlinear analysis. A systematic study of integral equations with an analytic nonlinear part was started at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries by A. Liapunov, E. Schmidt, A. Nekrasov and others. Their research work was directed towards the theory of nonlinear waves and used mainly the undetermined coefficients and the majorant power series methods, which subsequently have been refined and developed. Parallel with these achievements, the theory of functions of one or several complex variables was gradually enriched with more significant and subtle results. The present book is a first step towards establishing a bridge between nonlinear analysis, nonlinear operator equations and the theory of holomorphic mappings on Banach spaces. The work concludes with a brief exposition of the theory of spaces with indefinite metrics, and some relevant applications of the holomorphic mappings theory in this setting. In order to make this book accessible not only to specialists but also to students and engineers, the authors give a complete account of definitions and proofs, and also present relevant prerequisites from functional analysis and topology. Contents: Preliminaries • Differential calculus in normed spaces • Integration in normed spaces • Holomorphic (analytic) operators and vector-functions on complex Banach spaces • Linear operators • Nonlinear equations with differentiable operators • Nonlinear equations with holomorphic operators • Banach manifolds • Non-regular solutions of nonlinear equations • Operators on spaces with indefinite metric • References • List of Symbols • Subject Index.
