Book Synopsis Topical Workshop on Low Radioactivity Techniques by : Bruce Cleveland
Download or read book Topical Workshop on Low Radioactivity Techniques written by Bruce Cleveland and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2005-09-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop examined the state-of-the-art of all techniques for measuring radioactivity at ultra-low activity levels as well as all aspects of the development of low-background detectors. Such detectors are needed to study physical processes that can only be observed when all sources of interfering background are reduced to a very low level. These techniques are essential to develop next generation detectors for neutrino research, solar neutrino physics, and neutrino astrophysics, as well as measurement of the double beta-decay process and the search for dark matter in the universe. Topics covered include experimental radio-purity requirements, methods for shielding detectors from cosmic rays and local radioactivity, methods for the measurement of impurities in bulk materials, in gases, and on surfaces, techniques for materials purification, and related subjects. The workshop marked the beginning of excavation for the new international facility for deep underground particle astrophysics (SNOLAB), located in Sudbury, Canada.

Download or read book Proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter written by Minos Axenides and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the latest in a prominent biannual series of scientific meetings on the exciting research topics of dark matter and, more recently, of dark energy. It contains a state-of-the-art update on detection efforts by experimental groups around the world trying to pin down exotic new forms of matter under the names of axions, neutralinos, wimps, primordial black holes, q balls, sterile neutrinos, as well as a tantalizing new form of dark energy component called phantom energy and quintessence. The book is self-contained as it also includes general reviews on recent cosmological observations ? supernovae measurements, cosmic matter distribution surveys and cosmic radiation anisotropies ? introducing even the uninitiated reader to this fascinating frontier of research.

Book Synopsis Production Yield of Muon-Induced Neutrons in Lead by : Holger Kluck
Download or read book Production Yield of Muon-Induced Neutrons in Lead written by Holger Kluck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this book is a major step towards understanding and eventually suppressing background in the direct search for dark matter particles scattering off germanium detectors. Although the flux of cosmic muons is reduced by many orders of magnitude in underground laboratories, the remaining energetic muons induce neutrons through various processes, neutrons that can potentially mimic a dark matter signal. This thesis describes the measurement of muon-induced neutrons over more than 3 years in the Modane underground laboratory. The data are complemented by a thorough modeling of the neutron signal using the GEANT4 simulation package, demonstrating the appropriateness of this tool to model these rare processes. As a result, a precise neutron production yield can be presented. Thus, future underground experiments will be able to reliably model the expected rate of muon-induced neutrons, making it possible to develop the necessary shielding concept to suppress this background component.

Book Synopsis Radiation Tolerant Electronics by : Paul Leroux
Download or read book Radiation Tolerant Electronics written by Paul Leroux and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on radiation-tolerant electronics has increased rapidly over the past few years, resulting in many interesting approaches to modeling radiation effects and designing radiation-hardened integrated circuits and embedded systems. This research is strongly driven by the growing need for radiation-hardened electronics for space applications, high-energy physics experiments such as those on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and many terrestrial nuclear applications including nuclear energy and nuclear safety. With the progressive scaling of integrated circuit technologies and the growing complexity of electronic systems, their susceptibility to ionizing radiation has raised many exciting challenges, which are expected to drive research in the coming decade. In this book we highlight recent breakthroughs in the study of radiation effects in advanced semiconductor devices, as well as in high-performance analog, mixed signal, RF, and digital integrated circuits. We also focus on advances in embedded radiation hardening in both FPGA and microcontroller systems and apply radiation-hardened embedded systems for cryptography and image processing, targeting space applications.
