Book excerpt: "While the sabermetrics revolution in baseball is now fully institutionalized, other sports have embraced data analysis more slowly-especially American football. Yet thirty-five years ago, Bob Carroll, John Thorn, and Pete Palmer were laying the groundwork for the transformation of the sport when they wrote The Hidden Game of Football. Readers in 1988 found this book to be staggering, with myths and misconceptions 'left strewn in the wake of their analysis like the Columbia University secondary after a running play' (Allen Barra). Today, with statistical analysis becoming more widely accepted across the NFL, the book seems prescient and influential--as Aaron Schatz notes in his new foreword"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for those of us who love Georgia Bulldogs Football and who cannot wait until our next win. There is no need to be impatient because as of 2022, Georgia is now at the top of the pack and the Bulldogs win big games all the time. Ask the others! In 2022, of course we all know, Georgia became the College Football Champions. The founding of the University was in 1785 and before Georgia eventually played its first football game, the first book was read at UGA right after Abraham Baldwin of the University of Georgia drafted legislation that became the charter of the university. Georgia student life moved quickly as the first student organization was founded as the Demosthenian Literary Society was founded. The first commencement was held with Josiah Miggs, President presiding in 1804. For its first 50 years the school was known as Franklin College. Soon after being established, Charles Herty got football going on campus in the fall of 1886 and UGA played its first intercollegiate football game. It took a while but in 1929, the school built its first stadium Sanford Stadium. The rest of the college football is not necessarily thrilled that Georgia became so good, so fast, and now they are recognized as the best team in the nation. Georgia won its first National Championship in 1942. In 1980, Georgia repeated its national championship with freshman Herschel Walker leading the way. The Bulldogs remained a national powerhouse with a lot of close calls to greatness until 2022 when it again won another National Championship with a coach who was a great Georgia graduate. Go Bulldogs! This book captures the whole great story of Georgia football. It takes the reader through stories about Georgia’s great immortal coaches and great players over the years. You will not be able to put this book down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College football is a massive enterprise in the United States, and southern teams dominate poll rankings and sports headlines while generating billions in revenue for public schools and private companies. Southern football fans worship their teams, often rearranging their personal lives in order to accommodate season schedules. The Origins of Southern College Football sheds new light on the South’s obsession with football and explores the sport’s beginnings below the Mason-Dixon Line in the decades after the Civil War. Military defeat followed by a long period of cultural unrest compelled many southerners to look to northern ideas and customs for guidance in rebuilding their beleaguered society. Ivy League universities, considered bastions of enlightenment and symbols of the modernizing spirit of the age, provided a particular source of inspiration for southerners in the form of organized or “scientific” football that featured standardized rules and scoring. Transported to the South by men educated at northern universities, scientific football reinforced cultural values that had existed in the region for centuries, among them a tolerance for violence, respect for martial displays, and support for traditional gender roles. The game also held the promise of a “New South” that its supporters hoped would transform the region into an industrial powerhouse. Students and townspeople alike embraced the new sport, which served as a source of pride for a region that lagged woefully behind its northern counterpart in terms of social equity and economic prowess. The Origins of Southern College Football is an entertaining history of the South’s most popular sport cast against a broader narrative of the United States during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, two momentous periods of change that gave rise to the game we recognize today.
